Last Sunday 5-21-17, I visited Magnolia for the first (and last) time ever. Im new to Texas from Florida and my friend from Georgia flew into town so we went to Magnolias based on another friends high recommendation (a Texas native). The reason I didnt give this place a one star is because the host was very pleasant and we wished that he couldve been our server. From start to finish, our actual server was very mediocre. We told him that it was both of our first time visiting Magnolias but he wasnt enthusiastic or very inviting. I expected him to at least make recommendations of their popular dishes, etc. but we had to ask which was like pulling teeth. He was almost too laid back as if he were high on cloud 9 but otherwise a nice kid. We played it safe and only ordered a loaded nacho dish and quesadillas which both tasted pretty bland if it werent for the extra sour cream. Here is why I would not return. Upon completion of our meal, we ordered dessert. As we waited for dessert, a ROACH almost the size of Texas was right on my seat and quickly crawled underneath! We immediately notified the staff (a nice woman with red lipstick) who blamed it on the rain since it had been raining heavily at the time and we sat at the table closest to the entrance so for a minute I took her word on it until just moments later there was ANOTHER ROACH in my glass of water (but this one was tiny). At this point, I had lost all faith and cancelled dessert and quickly requested the check (which I believe that they couldve comped us for considering two roaches in one visit). We left so quickly and I felt bad because I really wanted to like this place but I shouldve known better considering that the carpet looked like it had been there since Magnolias was built in the 70s. I appreciate the vintage appearance of this place but unless they undergo a major remodel/ renovation, I dont trust that they dont have a bug or roach problem.

(English & Español) This is one of my favs to get breakfast in Austin TX, I particularly like this location over the other one but both are good. These locations still have that original laid back Austin vibe, a definitive stop for anyone visiting Austin. They have a good variety of plates to accommodate very taste, their pancakes are awesome.

I came here after closing down my regular waterhole at 1am on a weeknight because there are surprisingly few late night food options in Austin and I had always heard of Magnolia Cafe as an Austin staple. Having never been and about to celebrate my 6th anniversary as a resident, I felt the planets had finally aligned and I was ready for my formal initiation. That being said, I think I may have either ordered the wrong thing and/or this is just not my kinda place or maybe I it was because I wasnt drunk, in any case I was very much not impressed or a fan of the food here. I had a turkey reuben w/homefries as those seemed the most palatable option from my side choices. My turkey reuben was a bit meh. The bread was a bit on the over-buttered/greasy side which gave it a weird taste and the turkey did not taste fresh. As for the homefries, not sure if it was the oil they were cooked in, but they tasted a bit off as well and were not cooked nearly as much as they should have been. I only had water w/my meal and it still came to over $11 w/tax and tip and quality-wise was maybe worth half that. The only redeeming quality of my visit was my waiter, who was an absolute doll. I always hate to dislike an Austin staple and I know there are Kerbey Lane and Magnolia party lines that as an Austinite you are "supposed" to adhere to, but between the two, I am definitely voting as an "Independent".

An Austin original, the Magnolia Cafe should be on everyones Austin-must-visit list. We stopped by for the first time tonight and the menu is extensive. We arrived at 930pm Saturday night and had no trouble finding parking or getting a seat. It wasnt until I read the reviews that I learned how busy this place can get. When we left, parking was near impossible to find, but there was still open seating. Food: I asked our server for recommendations and she couldnt stop raving about the Enchiladas with Chipotle sauce. This was a great suggestion and I ate them faster than I care to admit. They were delicious. I also ordered a side of queso to cover the beans, which was a nice touch. My son ordered the Monta Cristo and Ive never seen him enjoy a sandwich this much. My wife had the migas, which was less eggs than onions, jalapeños, and green peppers. She seemed to enjoy them, but after eating a few bites myself, I am not a fan. Must have: for desert we ordered one slice of blueberry pie and WOW. Im not a crust guy but this is an amazing piece of pie. Best crust I have ever tasted. It was like a sugar cookie. The blueberry filling was delicious and I couldnt stop eating it. It was enough for my family of three, but they stopped and I continued. Service was warm and friendly. I highly recommend a visit to this uniquely Austin restaurant.

We go to this restaurant at least once a week late night. We went to night and first the waitress apologizes for the wait and that the omelets were made incorrectly. When we do ge tour omelets, as my husband cut into his the paper that was used to separate the servings of turkey was inside. The waitress took the omelet away and the manager comes over and tells us he will comp it. We wait awhile longer for the omelet. The waitress gives us the check minus the cost of one omelet. We are still waiting for the other omelet when I call the waitress over. When asked about the omelet she tells us the manager said we didnt want it. The question remains, where was the omelet and what was comped. We have always excused the service because we dont go there when we are in a hurry. We will never return after this rudeness and bumbleheadedness of the staff and management to rectify an easily resolved situation.

Apparently when you move to Austin youre supposed to choose between Kerbey Lane Cafe or Magnolia Cafe and vehemently defend your decision against the heathen that frequent the other one. I never got this memo so I go to both depending on my geographic location when hunger strikes. Ive been to this Magnolia Cafe twice and both times waited what seemed like an eternity. There werent even that many people ahead of us, it just took forever for a table to become available. And it wasnt Sunday Brunch either. Like its SoCo counterpart, the waitstaff are friendly if not very prompt. The delay between being seated and taking drink orders and then food orders seemed unusually long. I got a burger both times but theyre definitely nothing to rave about. If youre in the neighborhood and want diner food, then Magnolia Cafe is hard to beat. Its definitely not worth driving across town though.
