I read all the hype and drove to Smithville to check it out. It is pleasant and clean on the inside and the staff was friendly and well groomed. The food was ok, generous portions and reasonably priced, but, really, just ok. Firstly, if youre going to serve cafeteria style, its more appealing to have the hot bar with the glass front so you can see everything and make your selections. The White Possum has a little window that you order through and you have to peek in to see what everything looks like during the slight moment the pan is uncovered. This setup would be more suited to having the customer simply order at the table and have a waitress bring it out. They hand you your plates at the window and you seat yourself. There were no trays which made carrying a plate, a bowl of turnip greens, and a glass of tea to my table awkward. You also have to pick up your utencils and napkins on the way. Again this setup would be better suited to table service. I cant imagine how someone with a cane or bad hands would manage. Another thing struck me as odd. I ordered turnip greens, I asked the waitress for some vinegar and she returned with a plastic single serve container with a lid like dipping sauce comes in. Every restaurant Ive ever eaten in puts the vinegar in some sort of bottle. Its as if the White Possum is totally unfamiliar with this aspect of southern cuisine. It would also be better for their financial bottom line because most customers will not need an entire portion cup of vinegar and they must surely waste a lot of those cups. I will add that they have one of the cleanest restrooms Ive seen in a restaurant in a long time. Its sad that today we compliment about what should be the way it is everywhere. While I probably wont make a special trip again to go back, I will give them another chance next time I happen to be there because any place can have an off day. I may also try ordering off their menu next time as well.

Very friendly servers that make you feel right at home. Service is slow sometimes but worth it when you get your food. You get large portions so if you leave not full to the rim its your fault. The sweet tea is good. Id highly recommend to anyone. The only reason not five stars is because of slow service at times.
