I have been going to Bagel Nation since I moved to Charleston from NYC about 7 years ago. Their bagels were the closest thing I could get to a genuine NYC bagel and worth waiting in line for. But my last two trips to Bagel Nation were so disappointing that I am 100% certain that I will never return. About 3 weeks ago, I took my parents there for breakfast. All three of our bagels were undercooked - the dough in the very middle was not even cooked! The lox spread was terrible and the service was even worse than usual. About a week ago, I was leaving town on business and decided to grab a bagel on my way out. It was 11:30 in the afternoon so the place was not crowded at all. I ordered a plain bagel toasted with butter. Then I stood there and waited for 15 MINUTES watching as all of the employees cleaned up the place. Not a single person was making food! I watched as one guy who was wearing the gloves they all wear when preparing orders, pick up the nasty mats off of the floor and then sweep and change out the garbage cans. Did he change his gloves before returning to prepare orders? I did not stick around to find out. And neither did the guy that came in right after me and ordered a sandwich. He was so tired or waiting and disgusted by what he was seeing that he just left without getting his money back. I asked the girl at the register to refund my money and, of course, she acted like I was being irrational. She said she would get someone to make my bagel right away. But I think 15 minutes was long enought to wait for a bagel with butter when no one else was in line ahead of me. Very disappointed in Bagel Nation - they have slowly gone down hill over the past year or so. The place is disgusting.

My husband and I are visiting from Virginia. We were searching for option #2 to grab brunch since option #1 had an hour wait time. Luckily, we stumbled upon Bagel Nation. It’s located in a small strip mall right off of Folly Road. This is your casual dining bagel shop. The décor is very simplistic. Customers order at the counter, with self-serve coffee and seating. The stream of customers were steady. You can tell there are many regulars. The staff was friendly. Prices were reasonable. When we started looking at what to order the menu blew our minds. There were so many breakfast and lunch choices, it took us about 10 minutes to order. I ordered the Turkey BLT on an everything bagel. The sandwich came with a choice of side. I selected the pasta salad, which Bagel Nation makes fresh daily. The helping of turkey and bacon on the sandwich was very generous. My sandwich was very good and filling. My husband started off with a cup of their chocolate raspberry coffee, which he raved as delicious. He had several refills during our meal. My husband ordered the western omelet stuffed with hash browns. The omelet came with toast or a bagel, and a choice of side. He selected the everything bagel, and his favorite breakfast item, a pancake, as his side. His omelet was huge and flavorful; he was only able to finish half. The pancake side was as large as the 7”-8”plate it was served on, and it passed his palette test. It was very fluffy and tasty.

5 star bagels, 2 star service. Im giving this place 4 stars because I want people to try the food and Im from the north, so I know good bagels and Bagel Nation has them. I went for the first time this morning and decided to buy a dozen bagels. After the employee put them all in the bag, she said "one more." I started counting what I had, positive I had counted off 12, and in a negative, surly voice, she started yelling "one more!" I finally asked "Isnt that 12?" She yelled at me that I get 13. Thats awesome that this location does a bakers dozen, but it doesnt say it on the menu board and she didnt specify either, so making it seem like it was my fault wasnt too nice. But I let it go and picked one more bagel. I paid with card and she asked if I wanted a copy of the receipt. I said yes, she hands me one and walks away talking with her friend, and I realize its the one I need to sign and she said nothing. I had to reach over the counter just to get the pen to sign it, and when she finally walks back, I ask her where my receipt is. She points to the machine where my copy is still attached and she doesnt tear it off and give it to me, I had to grab it myself. None of this is a first world problem, and I loved the bagels, but if they keep up the crappy attitude and service, I may not keep my mouth shut next time.

Greatest bagels I have had since leaving the great northern bagel Mecca of NYC. Who ever owns the recipe for Bagel Nations bagels owns a fortune. Most surprising in this age of surly staff, the staff too was a welcome. Especially this one very bright, cheerful and just down right pleasant lady who soothed my ruffled feathers after I saw people coming in before me and picking up their orders before mine. Instead of snapping at me while there was so much activity in this great little find of a breakfast place, she smiled at me, told me about how most of their regulars just order ahead. Instead of her making me feel like an idiot for jumping to conclusions, she not only asked me how my day was going, but she also followed up with me after I got my order. I definitely can tell you that she was from New England and if you see this bright woman, say hi for me. She , too was a gem.

The bagels are usually pretty good and the selection is decent as well. The problem is the staff, they are so rude its unbelievable. Every time I go in there Im shocked how rude they are. Its especially funny when you are the only customer at the counter and three staff members will all try to look busy and not help you. Every time I go here I thank god Ive got a one man business. I can only imagine all the customers that are turned off by these rude and unhelpful workers. Luckily this is the only place to get bagels on James Island. Otherwise this place would be in serious trouble if it ever had any real competition. Which is a shame because they actually have good bagels. If I were the owner Id spend some money and have some secret shoppers work the store. I think he or she might be shocked at the results.

Lunchtime, No Tuna Salad, No Chicken Salad... its 1:15pm ?? Place looks terrible. Was once the go to place for bagels and bagel sandwiches. Service was terrible, employee standing at register telling everyone she is closed. Three people on line, took 10 minutes to find out they were out of anything I would have liked. The place was dirty, ceiling tiles missing over the kitchen area and food prep ( cant be OK by DEHEC), mold growing on the ceiling at every a/c vent. Very sad, as I said, used to be the go to place for bagels. No more!!!!
