let me start by saying that i have never felt strongly enough about a place to write a review. i have never been to an establishment worse than the el bar in my entire life. i went into this place with extremely low expectations and the el bar managed to take me into the depths of hell, infieitely worse than i could have imagined. i guess if you are not a regular at this armpit of a bar, forget about being waited on. the beers drinks are not overly cheap, yet i waited about 20 minutes withoufh ever being waited on; the one bartender in the entire place passed directly over me for the "regulars" at least 5 times before i gave up and sat back down. i went to see a friends band play, and paid a cover charge to get in. during their break, we left the bar to get some fresh air (it was extremely hot, and smelled like stale beer and sweaty armpits) and when we tried to get back in, not more than 10 minutes later, the doors were locked and they would not let us back in unless we paid another cover charge. we left. if i could, i would give the el bar negative stars. i have no idea how a place as shi**y as this could be in business for so long, becuase everything about it totally sucked.

Very hip bar that has pinball machines, 2-player arcade style games (Mrs. Pacman, anyone?) and beer/hot-dog deals. The crowd is young when going out on a Friday or Saturday and doesnt feel like a couples bar. There is a backyard with picnic tables for groups, bring your card games and go nuts! The billards scene is cut-throat. If you are skilled at pool definitely try playing the competition that is there. I consider myself moderate and I was given a run for my money (no betting, obviously). Will be going back when I can!

This is by far my favorite neighborhood hangout. I go to El Bar a couple times a week. Its definitely a dive bar, but the drinks are cheap and the bar tenders are friendly. There is a great back yard area where you can sit and drink outside in the summer time. They occasionally have shows with local bands. Its definitely bar to check out if youre a transplant to Fishtown from anywhere else in the city. I dont know that its necessarily a proper tourist destination, unless youre a huge fan of dive bars in general.

I dont usually like going to bars, but not this one. It was so cold inside that I had to wear my coat. At one point I had to go to the bathroom and there was no toilet paper, so I had to use the cuff of my coat, so I guess it WAS good that it was so cold inside that I had to wear my coat. Anyway this place is kind of hipster and the barista always gives me attitude. Anyways I had a good time. at El bar

Quintessential dive bar. The beers are cheap and pool games are only a dollar. Was a bit annoyed with the fact that no music was playing. Not sure if this is a new thing, but adding money to the over priced juke box is the only way to get music to play. For a hipster/dive bar, that seems a bit too money hungry for my taste

This amazing Dive Bar in lower Kensington has been cranking out boozy fun for as long as I can remember. Occasional live music and a pool table liven up the atmosphere. This place draws a younger crowd but has a mix of neighborhood Mainstays and Weirdos which is great in my book. A true Philly original

A small, unassuming bar. I came for the Wednesday night open mic event and was happy with the nights proceedings. I think the bar could do well to have a few allocated parking slots in the nearby parking lot, as I had to drive around for a good while, looking for parking.

There is a man who works there that has beaten/abused women. He has pleaded guilty in court, the owners of El bar know this and still choose to employ him. His name is Avery. Its probably best to avoid the place all together so you dont give an abuser any of your money.

This place used to be awesome. The bar staff are all fantastic but recently the place has become over run with damn hipsters and the owner(s?) have been doing some sort of renovation. Please accept that you own a great dive bar and keep it that way!!!

Lovely dive bar. There are tables out back but they are usually packed. Going here with a large crowd is hard to maintain. There arent very many spaces to hang out with too many people.

Great local dive bar. Large, unpretentious outdoor area thats usually dog friendly. Watch the El grind by as you drink a pounder in the big back yard. Watch out for mosquitos, though.

The city wide special is amazing. A tall boy of PBR and a shot for $4 is something that cant be beat. Great crowd and amazing live music. Plus you cant beat the pool table there.
