AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. If youd enjoy taking your family to a place where the owner storms over to your table, grabs your kids glasses away from them while loudly cursing at them with four letter words and yelling at your six year old to "sit up," I recommend this establishment highly. This literally all happened today during lunch service. It sounds like a joke, or an exaggeration. Its not. Granted, our kids may have been a bit boisterous. Their chief sins appeared to be dropping plastic cups a few times and dumping the container of forks onto the table. This latter incident caused the owner to silently come over, grab the container of forks, and take it to the bussing station, at which point I apologized to him. No response. The third time my six year old son dropped a cup on the floor, the owner came over again, angrily grabbed the cups (including one from our friends seven year old daughter, who was drinking from it at the time, causing her to break down into tears), and yelled at them to "stop right now" and to "sit up." Folks, this is NOT an exaggeration. When I told him that speaking to customers children like that was inappropriate, he responded that it wasnt his job to "pick up their s--t," in FULL earshot of our young children. If our kids are indeed causing a distraction and disturbing his other patrons experience - fine. Come over and have a quiet polite word with one of the adults. Kids drop stuff. But to YELL at paying customers kids and SWEAR in front of them is BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS. I have never experienced anything like this, EVER. Portlanders, you need to know the kind of person you are patronizing if you come here and spend your money. Its really a shame, because - having lived in Houston for the last six years - I think the food is terrific. This was our fourth or fifth visit to Mi Mero Mole- we wanted to support it and be loyal customers. Somehow, I dont think Ill be back, unless my six year old expresses a wish to have curse words lobbed at him from total strangers. I have sent emails to the local restaurant critics and food bloggers I know, as well as to the Portland Chamber of Commerce. This owner needs to get the message that disciplining paying customers children - and cursing at them - is never, EVER ok, no matter how poorly they are behaving.

VEGANS / BEWARE I ordered a vegan burrito with my family (they had two meat ones). As I get frustrated with having to pay for things that I dont eat, I asked for cheese on the side to give to my family. I was given the lamb one with cheese on the side. The vegan one had cheese in it. I took a couple bites from the lamb one. Needless to say I was upset. At no point was I told "sorry" and I was not asked if I wanted a replacement, they just did it. I lost my appetite and was trying to convince myself to eat the replacement vegan one, but I couldnt bring myself too. I sat there picking at chips trying to work out if I should just ask for my money back. As we were leaving, I decided to ask for my money back, as I wasnt going to eat this one and needed something to eat elsewhere. I intended on giving the burrito to a homeless person. The manager on duty (a larger guy in a green sweatshirt) was absolutely rude to me. He said "this is weird to me" "I think you are taking advantage of me" and "you are sticking the knife into us". He refused to give me a refund, stating he had remade the meal (not at my request) and provided free chips and salsa. I explained that no matter what one I would have been given, neither was vegan (as he made some excuse about not being able to see the interior of the burrito and kitchens make mistakes) All of us were so upset by the whole ordeal. The customer service was appalling. I ate MEAT!! I dont think he quite understood the seriousness of that, especially in vegan central Portland. You know, if he had just said "I am really sorry, and here is your $7 back" I would have been ok. Instead, he refused "on principle" (his words, not mine) to provide a refund. I would never come here again. I would advise if you are a non meat eater to not come here. I knew I should have just gone to Gorditas up the road (with a strict vegan menu) where I have never had anything but amazing food. (On a side note, the table next to us complained about their burritos to him too, and he did nothing there either. They ended up leaving their food on the table and walking out. Take that how you will)

Specializing in made from scratch moles and guisados (stewed meats/veggies and stir fries) this traditional Mexican street food restaurant brings us an authentic home cooked experience. Owner Nick Zukin (formerly of Kenny and Zukes fame) brings his attention to slow cooked, fall apart meats to the table with selections like pork adobo, beef and lamb tongue, and chicken chocolate mole (containing over 20+ ingredients.) Select your choice of meats, or go vegan with options like Hongos en Chile Colorado (mushrooms, potatoes, and kale in red chili sauce) or shrimp camarones, then build your own tacos using fresh house made tortillas, with a side of black beans and rice. I highly recommend the meatballs- made with ground pork, beef, ham, and stuffed with egg in a tomato-chipotle sauce! If youre not into tacos, try out the homemade rotating tamales, filled with different daily meat or veggies. Full bar with over 50+ different mezcal and tequilas, cheap margaritas, and rotating local beers on tap. Two locations on SE Division and a newly opened downtown spot in Chinatown. Downtown location has daily happy hour, with $5 daily specials, $3 pints, and the one of the best deals around town- a burrito, beer, and a shot for only $10! Show up hungry.

Normally, I brace myself for mediocre service when heading to a place with a large group. I recently went to Mi Mero Mole with a large group and not only did they do well, they more than impressed me. They were extremely fast, they took time to talk to us about the style of cuisine they have, and it was delicious. The tacos they serve arent what you typically get a Mexican restaurant, but apparently they are a common street food in Mexico City. The are corn tortillas filled with "guisados," which are homestyle style stews. I was able to try several different tacos, and they were all amazing. There was a spicy and delicious vegan taco with a mushroom stew that had really unique flavors like nutmeg. There was also a creamy taco with peppers, which was my favorite, although I would have preferred it with Chicken. We also had a tacos with beef and chicken. They were all amazing. I wish I lived closer to this place. Go there, help them get popular, and hopefully theyll expand to NoPo!!

When my wife and I first walked in, our server handed us our menus at the door and explained that we order and pay for our food and they bring it out to us. This is fine for me, except that I dont enjoy tipping before I eat. Fortunately, the service was great. I had the burrito with Lengua Ahumada (Smoked tongue with potatoes & cactus in green sauce). It also had a filling of black beans and rice. Though a little shy on the meat, I will not complain as it was delicious and filling. I also ordered a Michelada to drink and since I had never had one before, I asked the server to recommend what beer to use for it. He was very helpful and recommended the Victoria beer as a base. It was unique, spicy, and very well-balanced. Just what I like. Mi Mero Mole is quite a drive for us, but I would definitely swing by again if I was in the area.
