I have not one good thing to say about this establishment. In fact, if I could give it negative stars, I would. I should also say, it is not vegan-friendly, but at times Ive had to suffer through a meal there because of the company I was with. My latest, and hopefully last, time there was this morning. We sat down just after someone had wiped down the table, and it smelled so overwhelmingly of bleach, my eyes watered and my nose burned. Then, it took a disproportionately long time to get someone to bring us our drinks and food. Our server never checked on us to see if we needed refills (we did). After a very lengthy wait, we got our food, and one of the people I was with said, "We thought you might have forgotten about us." Instead of saying "sorry about the wait," possibly an appropriate reaction, the waitress just ignored the comment. The appropriate condiments werent on the table, and the wait staff actually "shushed" me when I asked for some. She rushed away before I could ask for a refill, and when I tried to get her attention, she held up her finger. I finally was able to ask her for a refill, but it took so long, I went to the counter to get more soda. After I returned to the table, she confronted me: "I HEARD you ask for a refill." I told her I didnt appreciate her rudeness. Meanwhile, wed probably been there 45 minutes, and my companions had not ever been asked if they wanted a refill on their coffee. With all that drama, the food is not worth it - it doesnt taste even marginally good. It seems that asking for food in a reasonable amount of time, with the condiments appropriate to the food, and a decent amount of civility is a minimum standard for restaurants. You cannot expect this if you go to The State Diner.

The State Diner is not for everyone. The facade and interior are quite intimidating. The building looks old and well-loved. However, what this diner lack in appearance, it makes up for in charm and delicious food. The wait-staff is always friendly and the food is always tasty. The food is always hot (when its supposed to be). The prices are reasonable, though some dishes have better prices than others for what you are getting. The State Diner is always good to visit during the day, but the best time seems to be in the middle of the night. It is a good classic diner--something that is difficult to find in this region of New York.

This is my usual breakfast spot. Its definitely a classic diner, not one of these trendy upscale diners - but a real one. The wait staff are friendly, real people and they keep your coffee cup full. The specials are a great deal and the eggs are always perfect. Its also one of the few places where you can get some decent biscuits and gravy. The home fries are plentiful and good, but I ask for mine well done so they come crispier. And they have a great fish special on Fridays.

We went for dinner. If you like home cooking and whoever cooks at your home is good at heating stuff up out of a can, this is your place. I like that kind of thing, so I thought the food was good. My wife, a foodie, said Guy Fieri would run away. The diner atmosphere is pleasant, although the music was a little loud. The wait staff were fantastic and just plain fun. If youre in the mood for good, simple food at a reasonable price, give it a try.

The State Diner used to be a staple, a must-visit diner in Ithaca. But since reopening after a fire a few years ago it hasnt been the same. The renovations are okay, but it lost a lot of charm in the transition, has much higher prices than it should, and is no longer 24 hours. As far as diner food goes it is slightly above average, and the staff is wonderful.

Poor service, smelly, unclean diner. The waitresses that come in early morning at 6 are bad. They make you seem like they are doing you a favor. Furthermore if you sit behind the counter, you can see how old and dirty it is along the refrigerator, the walls etc. I was really shocked by their service and the arrogant waitress that comes in at 6.

This diner was special, but probably in a good way. No complaints about the food, it was tasty and my friends seemed to enjoy their portions as well. The service was a bit quirky, I wasnt sure if the wait staff was there to help me or if I was suppose to be helping them. The fold-down seats feel like an efficiency experiment gone wrong.

Fun and bustling diner in the heart of Ithaca. Great selection of breakfast and lunch offerings with all the fixings. I had a Greek omelette with feta, tomatoes & onions and it was awesome! The hubby had eggs sausage & corn beef hash. Corn beef might have been canned, but it was still good. Service was fast and friendly.

The State Diner is great. Its a diner folks. Diner Food, Diner Service and Diner Hospitality. Its great for breakfast, lunch and late night. Always consistent and meets expectations of a traditional diner. If your expecting more, Ithaca has many options. Ithacas State Diner is a classic and delivers. Enjoy!

Have been going there for about a year since we moved to Ithaca, At first it was ok. But the food is pre frozen, French fries not fully cooked,To many reasons not to return. have to find another diner. The only good thing going is the wait staff. Sara is the best one. The decor is pre 1960. Really.

Food was tasty, soda machine wasnt working, waitress was funny, prices slightly higher than expected. At the time of writing, prices on the actual menu are higher than the menu posted on their website. We enjoyed the booths with foldable chair seats, never seen that before.

Good comfort food, fast and friendly service. Its not fresh, its not spicy or very inspiring, but if you just want to devour some chicken and biscuits that you had to cover in salt and pepper and douse in hot sauce, its a good filling meal.

The food is always excellent. I have been there a few times and even though its in the center of Ithaca, a busy college town, I can always still find a seat. The prices are very reasonable and the wait staff is always very friendly.

Great local place. Breakfast all day. Good shakes and burgers. Quick service. Only complaint is they tend to toast all of their sandwiches, even if it doesnt say toasted on the menu. Just have to remember to tell them not to.

This is REAL FOOD people. Super good and hearty food. Very cheap prices. True diner feel from the get go. No fancy vegan, vegetarian, no calorie, gluten free here. Good old fashion American were "town folk" go.

Opened 24 hrs? I beg to differ! December 6th after the show at the State Theater wanted to get something to eat. Walked into the diner at 10p.m. ..... "Sorry were closed". What?! Then CHANGE YOUR SIGN!!

Our family stopped over the State Diner for a quick bite and had a good time. The food was good and the environment is perfect. The staff were so nice and happy. Generally a happy place!
