Surprised that the reviews all kinda sound the same, but that the wait staff/service hasnt improved over the months.... I checked out Champs and similar to some of the other comments on here, I was rather underwhelmed by the wait staff/service. I met a friend there who got there before me, so she was seated at the bar when I arrived. The bartender asked if we wanted to stay at bar or get a table, and we decided to get a table instead. Big mistake. We were forgotten for like 10mins. The place wasnt busy so we kept looking around trying to get some service, until my friend finally flagged the bartender down and he came and took our orders (odd). Food came out pretty fast, and thats when the restaurant got kinda busy....but no one came to check on us (not a HUGE deal). Then a server asked to clear my plate when there was still obviously food on the plate (awk), thennnn we had to wait another 10mins after we were ready to pay until we were able to flag server down for check. Then the check and payment sat for a long time, until we finally flagged bartender down (he was only one that made eye-contact, *shrug*) to pay to which he responded with something along the lines of "Sure, ill give this to your server ok?" in a tone that felt like a this-isnt-my-job-just-so-you-know jab. And like, cool story bro...but you DO work there, so what else do ya suggest?! So anyway, service was wack and my Baja Fish Wrap was cool..but the inefficiency and vibe makes me kinda not wanna go back.

First i want to say that i LOVE this restaurant, and the food is AMAZING. This review is towards and employee and NOT towards the restaurant. I live around the corner of Champs so im there every week and if not for sure ill get take away on the weekends. My mum came to visit me and she was staying in a hotel 10 blocks from champs so we call for a delivery, they told me that their ratio of delivery was only until Humboldt and Flushing, the hotel, which is the Sumner hotel, is literally meters away from the corner of Humboldt and Flushing, i try to make AMY (the girl on the other side on the phone at champs) that i understand they have a ratio of delivery but that this was literally a 10 seconds walk from the ratio. After arguing about it with me for 10 minutes, she said that she will do it but this has to be the last time, because they are a really busy restaurant and i cant pretend that they change the rules from me. When the delivery guy came, he apologized, and said that he delivered many times where we were, and he got a $5 tip, because this is what happens to nice people :), dear Amy, you should learn from him. If anyone took the time to read this long review, once again i say go to champs and eat as much as you can because its all so good and i hope you have a better experience with the lady on the phone.

I really wanted to like this place. I have no problem spending money on vegan food, like, I travel just for the vegan food yo. But $10 for FOUR mozzarella sticks!?!? Fam, are you kidding me? What da hell. Anyway, they were aight, just aight. I was a salty AF bout the price tho. I got the chicken and waffles.... they should call it "taste of chicken ft a waffle". It was two drumsticks- the size of a newborns foot, with a stick shoved in the middle. That bit of chicken was really good and the small waffle was on point. Now, the service, yall need to step your game up B, you see everybody complaining about it, but you do nothing about it? Im gonna complain about it again. Im a server too, so Im not an ass. I know how terrible tables can be sometimes. I had to ask for a refill every time I ran out, Im not chugging my water at all. Its just that they were all hanging out at the bar chatting. the runner dropped off my food, had to flag down my server for water, 4 top next to me same thing, they wanted more coffee but server was to busy chillin/talking to refill any drinks. Also, that table, prolly left you a crap tip for crap service dude. Also, DONT COMPLAIN ABOUT CRAPPY TIPS AT THE BAR. any road. Small portions, large price tag, terrible/ horrible service. Taste.... Meh *Kanye Shrug*.

We never got to eat. in fact we were ignored by the rude man who seated us (was upset because we sat ourselves..no sign saying to wait to be seated..it was our first time there). made eye contact several times, just kept seating other parties and did not send a waitress over. Finally when a waitress began welcoming other parties and taking orders from people that came in after us, I could not take it anymore, and when "Mr. Happy" came by our table again, I hollered, " are we going to get a waitress today?" The closest waitress, came up and apologized..said she just got there and was trying to get a grip on who was there. She had been there all along, and if that was the issue, should MR HAPPY had told her what party was next? A real bad experience. I dont want to say its because we were black, but certainly, thats how our family felt. we walked out and went to SAGE around the corner and had an awesome THAI dinner with an excellent staff, catering to our every need. Now thats service.

Are diners your thing, but are tired of ordering the same veggie wrap without cheese or veggie burger that looks like a slew of leftover veggies smushed together? This is definitely NOT that kind of cruelty free diner food. This place is a mecca of delicious vegan eats. Been meaning to stop in here whenever I visit my sister who lives around the corner from it, I finally found some freak incident where there wasnt a line out the door demanding their mouth watering eats. The Gothamist just recently named their Buffalo Chikn Sandwich one of the top 9 vegan dishes in NYC, and even suggested as another meal their Grinder (which I have inhaled when ordered it, because it was so good). Their red velvet treats seem to be all the rage as they were hard to come by when Ive been in there. Definitely a must eat at spot.

I am right in between 2 and 3 stars.... its a cool place for having so many junk food vegan options... but the prices on certain things are way too high. Also as so so many people have said... crappy service. You think with so many reviews on their customer service, they would actually do something about it. I placed a to go order, gave the waitress the money for my food and she just took all the money and said "heres your order". Apparently the waitress will decide what you tip her (a.k.a all your money). Also, I ordered the Mac and cheese, which was just the noodles with a handful of dry vegan cheese on top. I mean really.. you couldnt have actually melted the cheese? Coulda done that at home for free yall. Dont waste your money on that one. DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALREADY!

All in all this place is cute, but the food is not great. The concept is vegan (mostly soy) traditional diner food, and unfortunately the vegan variations are usually not as good as the original meat and cheese they are trying to imitate. I love vegan food, but I prefer the kind of vegan food that is proud of being a vegetable instead of trying to be chicken. The cauliflower po boy was very bland. The cauliflower was fried perfectly, but it had no seasoning whatsoever. The chicken wings were seasoned nicely on the outside, but the meat was boring and the blue cheese sauce was also bland. (Maybe some extra yeast to get some umami in there would work..) We also had a pumpkin harissa burger, which was very good.
