They discrimnate against the solo diner. Let me preface this by saying that I am gainfully employed. I spend my Saturday mornings volunteering and training with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. I travel over an hour by bus and subway to get from College Point to Astoria Park. While I’m generally wearing running attire, I am clean, neat and presentable. When I’ve gone in to the Neptune Diner to use the restroom on my way to Astoria Park, I have made it a point to buy a cup of coffee and a buttered bagel or something in return. That’s the way I was raised. On Saturday, 1/14/2012, I had just finished logging mile 13.14 of my Nike+ Women’s Half Marathon to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All I wanted at that point was a huge, juicy, bacon cheeseburger deluxe. I was so famished, I could’ve probably eaten everything on the menu and then some. But thanks to the owner of Astoria’s Neptune Diner, this was not to be. My crime? I was dining solo. At 12:20-12:25pm-ish, I arrived at Neptune Diner in Astoria, and requested a booth for a party of one. I was told by both the owner and the manager that there would be a wait for a booth. I said that would be okay, since I had just finished a 13.1 mile half marathon, and was okay with sitting in the lobby and waiting. As I sat there, I watched as others who came in after I did got seated. This went on for another 15-20 minutes. I moved to another spot where I could see that booths were, in fact, being cleared. At that point, the owner motioned for a party of 2, who again came in after I had, and seated them in the cleared booth. 12:50pm I mentioned to the owner that I was about 5 minutes away from leaving. He said he was waiting for a small table to open up. I pointed at a booth with 2 people in it that was emptying. He told me that he could not seat me in a full booth, as it was very busy. I asked him “Isn’t my money as good as everyone else’s?” At 12:55pm, I watched as yet another party of 2 (who arrived about 20 minutes after I did) was seated in a booth right in front of me, while I still remained unseated. I then walked over to the owner and said, “I just wanted you to know that you’ve just lost a customer.” I did not yell, nor did I raise my voice during this exchange. His response - “Okay, so I lost a customer!” I want to be clear and say that the staff was not at fault here. This was definitely a case of the owner discriminating against the solo diner.

Came here to test it out with a group of 2. First thing I noticed when walking in was the noise level and decorations. I couldnt believe that they were able to block that much of the subway noise. You can hear it if you pay attention to it but overall, its relatively quiet in the restaurant. The decoration is really cute and I think the theme matches the name of the place. However, the food is just so so. We ordered the charbroiled octopus, tripe soup, and chicken pasta with white sauce. Only thing I can say is that the portions are huge, especially for the chicken pasta. That order is for 2 people. But food was eh. Chicken was very dry and no amount of pasta sauce could help the dish. The vegetables werent that fresh. The lobster bisque that came with the dish was on the salty side. Also had a lot of rice in it. I dont like rice in my lobster bisque. You can sort of taste the flavor of lobster and there are very small lobster pieces. The charbroiled octopus is an appetizer dish. It didnt taste as burnt as I thought it would be. Theres lemon and lots of oil in the dish. Its decent, slightly better than the pasta dish. The tripe soup. Its an acquired taste. They kind of make it Asian style, like the one you have at dim sum but in a soup form. I dont think many people would like it. Service was good. Water was always full. Waiter came by 2x to ask us how we were doing. Would I recommend this place, no. Would I come back, if I was REALLY lazy and didnt want to go anywhere else. This place is also pricey, but you do get big portions. I originally wanted to give this place 2 stars but I thought Id be generous since the service was good, food was so so.

I went to this diner last night and the waiter was not around for the first 20 minutes when he came to take our order he had a really disrespectful attitude towards me and my girlfriend. He also never bothered to explain the menu to us, and the fact that they were out of all their specials. Once we settled on our meals, they were brought out. The french fries were raw, and there were barely any pitas. We ordered extra pitas, and when they came out there was a ball of hair on them. Seriously? I asked for our food to be packaged to take home, and the next day when i opened it it was all mixed together in one container. Also, they did not package our tzatziki sauces, as theyre obviously too concerned about reserving it to someone else. I called to speak to the manager and was once again disrespected and told there was no chance i would be getting my money back. He then hung up on me. This is no way to run a diner and to treat customers. Secondly, the food sucks. Do not ever waste your time going here, you will only be disappointed.

I came to get a slice of pie from Neptunes, and after about two bites I noticed something crunchy so I spit it out. There were pieces of eggshell in my cheesecake, which happened to cut my tongue. After notifying the manager he replied with "it happens" and then walked away. The server was kind enough to get me a piece of another type of pie but it was dry and tasted like freezer burn. When I told him that it was inedible and that my tongue was still throbbing, he went to get the manager. The manager then went to the other room and hid from my sight until I paid and left the store. I should have complained more but I just paid and left. I at least made it clear that I would never be back. Just for the record, Im usually the type of person to give two star establishments a five star review. Im not too picky. But my tongue still hurts and the taste of freezer burn lingers in my mouth. The manager there is a nightmare.

Very overpriced and overrated on many of the food items. The burgers are sub-par. Ive had better in many other places. Its hard to ruin breakfast in any diner so thats not a big deal. And its not like its top quality food either. Just look at the prices on their steaks and chops. Its absolutely ridiculous. I could eat in a nice restaurant in Manhattan for some of these overinflated prices. Its a diner for goodness sakes! Some of the waiters are okay but management is very unfriendly and very unwelcoming. I will rarely go there now unless Im getting home super late from work and havent eaten yet - its right there at the subway stop in Astoria. The people on here who review and give them 4 or 5 stars must not get out much or get to eat out much.
