I happened on this place by accident driving from Texas to NM. I had forgotten to wash my hands having pumped gas at a previous station, so we were on the lookout for the next station to wash my hands. Enter Taste of India: First of all the parking lot looks isolated with more of sparse land than parking lot. It wasnt lit and it looked like something out of a horror movie and from the 80s. After circling the place and finding no satisfactory safe place to park, we chose the place nearest to the entrance and I ventured in. First thing that struck me was the rancid smell of spoilt, new, old food. Then to my left a restaurant with a flimsy divider separating it from the gas station area. It looked like someone had gone back to the 70s and brought this place back to 2016. On my right, open food buffet, but with the smell that hit my nose, I wondered why anyone would touch the food. I wont bad mouth anything else, even though I could. How they setup shop and their communication is subjective - but when I opted to bypass everything and just head straight to the bathroom, thats when I got my worst surprise. I couldnt touch the sink. I am not saying "use the sink" - I just couldnt touch it. So I went ahead to just pee, while humming to myself, but never daring to shut my eyes in case I accidentally bumped into any bacteria (or virus) lurking in this God awful unsanitary hole. There was an overhead lighting full of dead flies, and from it hung two fly traps - No! not the fancy light ones, but some paper gummy thing that flies get stuck on. I think they just stay glued til they die. And while I was trying to finish, mortified that I even came this far, a guy walked in and started brushing his teeth in same bathroom. Filthy to the core! and someone should get the health inspectors in there fast. I still cringe remembering ugh!

I know everyone says this, but this place doesnt even deserve one star. When asked why I wouldnt eat the food at their "Taste of India" restaurant, instead of being rude and telling them it was because the food was prepared in a disgusting, unsanitary manner, I just said I wasnt hungry. They left the baked chicken out for hours under the hand washing sink in the back of the restaurant on the floor where water splashed over on it. They did not wash dishes, but simply rinsed them out and put them back up. Food that was made one day for the hot case sat for at least 24 hours daily, and saw them sell 24 hour old burritos to people on several occasions. There was no "first in first out" with this place. Old food was mixed with new, raw chicken was cut IN the sinks they used to rinse dishes. There were constantly cockroaches crawling on the counters and up the walls that they didnt do anything about. I felt bad for people eating here. Just a note, it is still called Dhillons, but the Dhillons no longer own it. This was not going on here when they did. New people own it and are changing to Friends Truck Stop, this is where the problem started. Everyone that previously worked with the Dhillons left, on account of the new owners not running things properly, legally, and treating their employees like crap. I do not want the Dhillons having a bad name because of "Friends".

They food is great in the daytime but at night its a whole different story. Its best to catch them before the sun goes down because the food they serve seems to be leftovers and the guys dont seem to have the knowledge of how to cook anything. They have a buffet thats great in the daytime but at night its horrible, rice will hard as a rock and stuck to the pan and the meat will be scraps and to a point I understand since they dont want to waste anything BUT they have to learn how to keep enough for possible customers till midnight when they close, if I can do it so can they! Again let me emphasize that in the daytime they know what they are doing its the night shift that doesnt seem to give a damn and it makes ya wanna cuss em out for being so damn blind. They were selling beer but had an issue with their license and told me last week they would resolve the issue but they still havent. I love the place but just not the night crew because they dont have the service skills to prep and provide food for night owls. Hey I would be willing to pay a few more bucks for a fresh hot plate of chicken curry because it really is good I eat it all the time. I hope the owner reads this so he can improve the quality of of the food.

I was on a superfast and longdrive from SF to Atlanta and hardly ate during the day. At around 11pm spotted the sign taste of india and thought of refuelling and check this place out. Man...I was amazed to find an Indian dhaba in middle of nowhere and the food was awesome...just about the thing I needed after a tiring drive. The food quality was awesome, indian bread made fresh right when I ordered....the guy was serving everything generously (so much food...I wasnt even able to finish!) and even packed me fresh made samosas for the morning breakfast. The next day at Atlanta, I was already craving for such indian food. I am definitely going to stop at this place whenever I am driving cross-country. For people who are doing cross country, do pack some food from this restaurant as its hard to find anything made fresh between atlanta and bakersfield. You wont be disappointed ....

In 2009, I was moving for a job change from Arkansas to Las Vegas, driving all the way. My first such a long drive in US. After starting from Amarillo the second day, I was looking for a McDonalds or subway to eat and get gas in the desert of New Mexico. My eyes couldnt believe when I saw the sign "Punjabi Dhaba next exit". I still couldnt believe, but as I closed on , there were repeated hoardings. We went inside and to my amazement, delicious Aaloo Paratha in middle of nowhere. It was like a dream. I cant exactly remember what else I ate, but everything tasted so yummy. I have been there twice , once again while coming back to Atlanta from Vegas for my next job change. I would love to go there again. It is not just the food, but its the thrill of finding such place in middle of a desert in the USA.

I got off the interstate ONLY because of the advertised buffett signs I have seen along I40 for many years from both directions. FRADULENT ADVERTISEMENT- Buffet no longer availabe; Bate & Switch. Get rid of the damn signs. Incidentally a sign above their building still shows it in huge lettering. I cant believe some of the ratings this place got, come on people raise your standards. The place is a dirty hole in the wall, disgusting restrooms with few products on the shelves. Many Mom and Pop Truckstops unlike this one are clean and cozy as they try to compete with Pilots n Loves. For those of you that like this place you must come from a 3rd world country. But this is San Jon, NM (USA) not f..... Baghdad.
