We went to this restaurant for Cinco di Mayo, and this is the first time I ever went to this place. First thing there is no hostess when you walk in, second the tables are dirty and on top of each other. When we got there we sat ourselves, and got our own menus. I am not sure if it a fast food place or a sit down restaurant. One good thing its BYOB, but they didnt offer an ice bucket for our beer. That day were under staffed, and I asked for tortilla chips with salsa because it is complementary for everyone, and they never brought it out. Also they didnt have salt, pepper, or hot sauce on the table for you. To top it off my friend didnt finish his dish, and my fiancé had bad stomach problems. I am disappointed because I was hoping it would be a nice local Mexican spot for me and my family to go to once in awhile, but I guess Im better off waiting an 1hr at Jose Tajes in Islin, NJ.

This family run restaurant has been feeding my family on a regular basis for several years now. The food is consistently well prepared and tasty. The chef/ owner and his family are from Mexican state of Guerrero...and prepare menu items like enchiladas, mole poblano and cerviche in a manner not found in most other americanized restaurants. The dishes are light and extremely flavorful, yet easy to digest (not too much fat/salt afterglow like many mexican restaurants!) Everything is cooked to order, but service is quick. The surroundings are very casual, but the food is delightful. BYO beer/wine but they stock Mexican sodas, bottled water and american sodas as well as some good bottled iced tea brands.

My review from urbanspoon: Its about 3 blocks from a Taco Bell. And its about a thousand miles away from Taco Bell. This small, family-run place serves really authentic Mexican fare with a large menu. I just had a FANTASTIC chile relleno and guacamole there for lunch; my wife loved her fish tacos. Everything was very fresh and service was friendly and quick. Unfortunately for them, the place was empty except for us so GO THERE! Ive eaten here maybe half-a-dozen times (July 13 most recently) and have been very satisfied with the food and service all except for once. To be fair, the one bad time was due to the chef being out sick and his replacement was pretty inexperienced.

If youre looking for a delicious Mexican meal, go to the family-run Picante! The menu is diverse and the food delicious! My husband and I could never find a Mexican restaurant that satisfied our cravings, but finally found one in the (not-very-promising) Springfield. Picante does not drown the food in cheese and sauce. They use the right amount of all ingredients, and that makes me really really happy. The homemade guacamole is a tad pricey but soooo worth it! The owners definitely need to play music because the vibe can be a little awkward at times. The decor can be revamped to reflect their bright and delicious food! Overall, I love Picante!

Way overpriced for the portion you get, we ordered a fajita plater and most of it was peppers and onions and not even a half cup of pork and beef, along with less than a spoon of full of rice and beans and 3 small tortillas for $18.50 not worth the high price tag. They forgot our salad and mixed up the tortilla we ordered, at the end we caught a $10.00 overcharge on our bill and the stuff barely apologized, luck me I was already skeptical about the prices and took the time to check my bill. It feels horrible to write a bad review but I can not let it go without saying something.

This is a diamond in the rough - The owner is trying to develop his business on a shoestring - If your patient - you will be pleasantly surprised! Joe Tejas is your average tex mex type of establishment - Picante is as traditional and authentic as it can be. The tables are not "on top of each other" - lack of hostess due to being a fairly new establishment - Give it another try - not on a holiday - during the week... Speak with the owner who is the cook and tell him what your first impression was... Give it another try...

The food was ample and Good. The service was a single waitress who spent a good deal of her time yelling back to the kitchen. We waited for her to notice that we were there. We waited for her to to take our order and we waited for our check. The food was good, but no longer a good deal. When it was cheap the shortcomings of the place could be overlooked. But now that they are at 13 for an entrée they have entered the realm of being a real restaurant and they are not up to the task.

Wow, its so hard to find good Mexican food in NJ, so I was thrilled when I found and tried Picante. The carne asada tacos were just about perfect and the Pollo en Barbacoa was just as youd find in Acapulco (the owners are from the Mexican Pacific Coast city). Its a cozy space, no more than about 20 seats. The owners are friendly and willing to engage in conversation about their little part of the world. Highly recommended, and Ill definitely be back!

We went yesterday, looking to try something new for Cinco di Mayo. As other reviews suggested, the guacamole is great. Get it on the nachos though. Not one chip was left over. Service was a little sparse: it was a bit understaffed. However, the meal more than made up for it. On a quieter day, Im sure this place would get a better rating. As far as authentic, it doesnt get much better than Coca-cola in glass bottle.

One of the best Mexican restaurants Ive been to. Its a small place. Eat-in or take-out. The family that owns and runs the place takes great pride in what they serve. The food tastes fresh and is cooked to order, so while the service isnt always quick, its friendly and worth waiting for. Guacamole, fish tacos and wet burritos are all excellent. Ask for the green salsa. Quite spicy, but amazing flavor.

i LOVE picante. guacamole is one of my favorite dishes and hands down this place has the best! its always made fresh. my favorite dish here is the chile relleno, which comes with beef, chicken, or cheese. also, their food portions are pretty huge; you could easily share an entree, but wont want to cause their food is so delicious! the waitstaff is kind and patient as well.

All i can say is WOW. This food is beyond delicious, so fresh and clean. The owners are very sweet and accommodating. I am in there at least once a week and definitely spreading the word about this diamond in the rough of shitty Springfield. However, the prices are reasonable and I am very thankful to have found a real Mexican restaurant. QUE RICO!

This is a great little mexican restaurant. The ingredients are fresh and the quality is high. The decor isnt fancy and the service is fine. If you need fancy decor or white glove service then you shouldnt be eating Mexican. Theres a place across the street where they wear tuxedos. Go there so theres a table free for me at Picante.
