Stopped by this little Highlands joint on my way from Red Bank to the lighthouse at Sandy Hook. I remembered passing it back when I lived in the area & thinking the name was cute (apparently its just the name of the street its on?!), so I thought Id check it out while I was nearby. The Water Witch is pretty cute inside, with eclectic & artsy decor & an overall sort of beach-town feel. I love the bumper sticker on the register that says, "Highlands, NJ: Were not the Hamptons & we dont want to be." You get the feeling that the Water Witch really belongs to the locals & prides itself on that. There were two gruff old guys sitting at the bar, & I felt sort of weird - like non-locals never go in or something, like I wasnt supposed to be there? But the girl at the register was friendly, & the soy latte she made me was second to none. Seriously, it was one of the best Ive had in a damn long time, & it wasnt too expensive, either. I think it was $3? Sadly, my croissant was totally stale - waste of money, I threw it away immediately - & the atmosphere felt a little bit inhospitable. My drink was put in a to-go cup & my pastry was bagged, under the assumption that I wasnt staying (I had been planning to, actually). I just felt sort of weird staying, so I took off. I dont live in this area anymore, so I probably wont have opportunity to return to the Water Witch, but if I were still nearby, Id probably try to opt out. Unfortunately, I dont think there are any other coffee shops within a 15-mile radius!

I have to say that I have a bit of a bias opinion when it comes to Water Witch, only because Im a proud highlands local. However, Im usually in and out every morning with a coffee accompanied with a shot of espresso (sometimes 2, but shhh) but last week my life was changed by Kens German Chocolate cake. There it was glistening with coconut behind the glass case in all its glory just daring me to try! If you are a lover of fine german chocolate cakes you have got to try Kens version. So light, chocolaty, and just sweet enough! Water Witch takes the cake...literally. (P.S. Nancy is the best barista ever...just dont forget my cinnamon! :P) See you in the morning :) Ericka (behind the Claddagh)

Best expresso ever! Full of robust flavor with just the right hint of bitterness, this was the first expresso Ive had that was so rich. It was delicious, and I dont get to the area often but its always worth the trip. The pastries and coffee are also a treat. I love the vibe, Nancy IS the best barista ever, and the food & drink are fabulous.

LOVE this place. Its my morning hangout on Sunday or Monday while my laundry runs. Great coffee and latte, plus sweet breakfast treats and good solid breakfasts like their breakfast burrito or Jersey bowl, or soup if youre later in the day. Very relaxing and always someone fun to have a good discussion!
