If your travels should take you the Western part of New Jersey or if you live in the Garden State, I would heartily recommend a trip to the Jagerstein Biergarten in Delaware, NJ. Fans of German food in that area are most likely familiar with The Black Forrest Inn in Stanhope and The Dutchman’s Brauhaus in Manahawkin; but the Jagerstein Biergarten is an undiscovered gem a few miles south of I-80 near Delaware Water Gap. The building exterior though unpretentious gives a strong indication of the Alpine culinary adventure on which you are about to embark. The interior continues the theme with a rustic atmosphere that blends the feeling of simultaneously being in an Old Country village and the kind of local pub so popular in that area of the state. Unlike many “German” restaurants that feature a handful of German entrees, Jagerstein Biergarten is loaded with selections. The biggest challenge visiting there is trying decide which one to pick. Our party decided to start off the meal with two of their appetizer specialties: potato pancakes and a pretzel accompanied with sliced sausage and a cheese dipping sauce. The pancakes were thick and flavorful with just the right amount of crispness on the outside. For the pretzel, I followed the advice of Tara, our server, and wrapped the sausage around the pretzel before dipping it in the cheese sauce. The result – Wunderbar! For the main course, all in our party decided on veal: two of us trying one of the evening specials, Veal Alpine and the other opting for traditional Wiener Schnitzel. The Veal Alpine is reminiscent of Veal Cordon Bleau; not surprising since Chef-Proprietor Jean Louis boasts both German and French heritage. The veal was very tender and topped with ham and Swiss gruyere cheese. But the piece de resistance was the Jager Sauce, a creamy mushroom gravy that was the perfect complement to the thin and flaky crusted veal. The Wiener Schnitzel was equally delicious and also accompanied with the Jager Sauce. The sides that rounded out the meal were also very flavorful: spätzles lightly browned, tart and tangy red cabbage, and the house version of sauerkraut, Jager kraut. The main course was rounded out with an ample assortment of homemade rolls and biscuits, perfect for sopping up the residual Jager Sauce. Should you wish to accompany your meal with a traditional German beverage, they have several imported bottled beers. If you prefer a draught, they also have HB Heffe Weiss on tap. After such a sumptuous feast and knowing Jean Louis’ French ancestry, we were sorely tempted to venture into dessert territory. But alas, none of us had room for another bite. So as a compromise we ordered dessert to go. The two selections were Black Forrest Cake and a Raspberry Napoleon. Both lived up to expectations. The Black Forrest cake was very moist and the Napoleon had a super flaky pastry with a fresh whipped cream filling. Equal to the quality of the food was the attentiveness of the staff. Tara with her smile, genial personality, and recommendations made our dining experience a delight. And Jean Louis came out of the kitchen twice to ensure that we were enjoying our meals. So if you are in the mood for a true German experience in a cordial atmosphere, take a trip to Jagerstein Biergarten. The nice thing about Jersey is that you’re never too far from any part of the state; but even if you have to travel for an hour or so, it is worth the trip. It’s a scenic ride and besides, it gives you time to build up a healthy appetite.

We went there for the first time over the weekend and it was fantastic. Their website cant emphasize authentic enough because it tastes exactly like something you would get in Germany. Although smaller than other biergartens, the food quality is superior to places like the Zeppelin Hall in Jersey City, Pilsner Haus in Hoboken, and the Black Forest Inn in Stanhope. Its really that good. My only wishes would be to have more HB variety on tap and more wait staff on the weekend.

Reopened as Jagerstein beer garden. Pretty solid food at this hidden German restaurant and beer garden by the river. The beer selection is good, though could use a few more adventurous German brews. The outside area is very nice for a sunny day and dogs are allowed. Service is friendly but a bit slow. The food is pretty good, though definitely on the Americanized German side, particularly the schnitzel burger. The fries were top notch though.

Awesome food and service! If you enjoy German food, or well prepared food in general, you owe it to yourself to try this place. The owner and staff obviously care about the food they serve and the experience you have as their guests. I was very impressed and went away feeling that we got an awesome meal at a reasonable price. To be fair, they had me when I was told they had a dunkelweissen on tap. :-)

Cant give this a 10 star or I would! Great food for a great price! The owner is an absolute great guy! Hand crafted food made with real passion at this little nook just off the river! I had the venison and it was amazing! I look forward to bringing all my friends and family back to this place!

Food was very good. Im a big fan of wild game (venison, elk etc) I tried their venison trio, it was fabulous to say the least. Its a "old fashioned " type of restaurant, they take their time serving food, if you want fast , go to Macdonald or pizza hut. I will be coming back soon

Friendly service, all food was excellent. Started with potato pancakes. Rouladen, spaetzle and red cabbage as good as I had in Munchen, Germany. Ended with apple strudel. Will definitely return.

This place is great, traditional German food at its finest. Rustic, not modern, perfect.
