I really did not enjoy my experience at the Pilgrim Diner. I went here with my friend and the waitress was really cold and rude. We ordered a spinach pie to start and I ordered a chopped steak while my friend ordered a burger. We also ordered a few drinks so our bill was around 50 dollars. The food is not that good. The spinach pie was really good and I think one of the best things on the menu, however the rest of their food is not so great. The soup has a metal taste to it while the chopped steak and my friends burger taste bland. If you are to eat there, just go for their spinach pie and ignore the rest. The waitress was cold and rude. She forgot our silverware and when we requested it, she was grumbling and tosses the silverware on the table and walked away. When I finished my glass of water, I requested a refill. She replied "You get what you get" and walked away. Lastly when we asked to split the bill, the waitress yelled and lectured us that it is wrong for us to ask the bill to be split. I had enough and took the bill and pay it in full. This is the first time I have been denied of water and being lectured at in a restaurant. I never done this before, but I left no tip.

Went in for coffee with my husband. Asked for the check and was told by the waitress $5.35. I asked her if they accepted debit cards and she said "I dont know why anyone would use a card for only $5.35?" I asked her again and she ran my card. No written check? Hassel about paying with plastic? She wanted to put the whole check in her pocket. Steal from the owners. I asked the girl at check out why I got such a problem from the waitress, and she acted clueless. Im pretty sure the hostess and the waitress are regularly scamming the owners of this diner. I dont think they realize that they could be arrested for their little operation. Needless to say, I want no involvement, and wont be returning.

I really hate to complain about restaurants, especially since Ive worked at several, but wow...what a bad experience. The food was OK. I mean it wasnt inedible, but it definitely wasnt worth writing home about. The waitress was aggressive and didnt even try to fake giving a crap about us. The hostess was rude and was yelling at people the entire time.My friend and I pride ourselves on having experienced a ridiculous number of NJ diners throughout the years, and this one unfortunately qualifies as one of the worst weve ever been to. I want to chalk it up to coming on an "off" night, but after reading some other reviews, I cant imagine our experience not being the norm.

The poor old Pilgrim Diner is falling apart. From the banquettes with actual holes & stuffing falling out of them to the dirty, taped-together blinds ... I would hate to see the terrible condition of other areas, if this is what what the public areas look like! And when I found an olive pit in my food - which almost broke my tooth - I was told that I should complain to the olive company, since we got the olives out of a can. Alrightly then. I a state that is filled with GOOD diners, you should avoid this one, which used to be pretty decent. Now, its just decrepit.

Place is absolutely filthy. I have been going here for over 25 years. It has been so neglected I wont even walk in there anymore which is such a shame. Its at the top of my street and was always a great place to grab a bite. But not anymore. If it looks that bad in the front of the house i couldnt imagine what the kitchen looks like that no one sees. I am amazed the health department hasnt shut them down. I wish they would invest some money and get it back to what it used to be. Until then I wont go back.

Upon Suburban Essex magazines proclamation of #1 Diner I promptly headed to The Pilgrim Diner for breakfast with my family. Sadly the food was average, the service was average and the price was well...average too. As diners go this about as run of the mill as things get. No great atmosphere. Food that is what you might expect from your average greasy spoon. Not sure what the criteria was for the #1 rating but I strongly disagree. Particularly when I see The Ritz Diner in the #2 spot.

Went to diner for standard burger at lunch time. Seating and table service was quick. I ordered a cheeseburger and well done fries. I received a thin burger which was previously frozen, no thick burgers here. The fries were well done but sutuated in oil. For desert I ordered a slice of coconut cake but was given lemon cake with coconut shavings. Dont expect great diner food here. You get bare basics.

Wait staff horrible..Rude and disrespectful, not only to my table but to the table that brought in 4 people in wheelchairs.. You would have thought they were doing them a favor .Never going back to that horrible place again. They should be nice to people after all its not the nicest place on the block.Needs to be updated..They need to be retrained in how to work in service or they will fail.

The food is good, but the place is falling apart!!! We had to move to another table because the ceiling was leaking, and we had to move the plates ourselves :( because the waiter seemed overwhelmed serving with other tables. I like to support local businesses, but they are making it almost impossible for me to support them.

I used to frequent this diner ONLY for breakfast and sit at the counter. The chairs are all wobbly and ripped I complained to the owner he told me if I dont like it not to come there anymore havent been there since. Do yourself a favor go elsewhere they dont deserve to be in business
