UPDATE 2/26/17: I have completely given up on this place. I keep going back and trying to make it work but it gets worse every time. The service tonight was hands down THE WORST service I have ever gotten anywhere and I left the lowest tip I have ever left in my life. And the food seems to get worse every time I go...what is going on!? Its a Saturday night, so I expected this place to be VERY very busy. No surprise, it was. I can tolerate slowness as a result of just being jammed with people. But this was way beyond that. The particular bartender working Ive had issues with in the past. He voluntarily refuses to look up past the front edge of the bar. You will wave and yell excuse me! and never get his attention. Tonight was no exception. After quite a bit of effort we finally ordered drinks. Meanwhile were waiting for one of the seat yourself tables to be cleared. Bus boy has zero sense of urgency. We walked in just before 7:30 and tables were dirty. We didnt have a clean table to sit at until just shy of eight. We finally sit down, and cant get anyone to come to the table. After five or so minutes our drinks are done and I walk to the bar to get menus and another round. One of the managers asks where were sitting, I point it out and he says "oh you snuck in I didnt see you". "Uh NO we waited for that table for thirty minutes we didnt sneak in." He proceeds to ask if were on the list. What list!?!?! This section of the restaurant has been seat yourself every time Ive ever been in it. He then repeatedly asks if we checked in with anyone, got on the list, mentions that people have been waiting a long time for these tables and basically guilting us for sitting down. Funny thing about that, but shortly after we walked in a different manager asked if we wanted one of the tables and we said yes, he said hed get it cleaned for us. If something suddenly changed tonight and it was no longer seat yourself youd think someone would have mentioned that....but no, we repeatedly get guilted for sitting down after waiting for thirty minutes while the bus boy takes his sweet time. Turns out the bus boy is also our server. With zero sense of urgency. Literally zero concept of hurrying for anything apparently. I also specifically ordered extra chopped onions and cilantro for my tacos. They came with the standard amount of cilantro on them, and when I asked for what I had already ordered, he argued with me about it being on there. "Theres cilantro..." Well thats not what I ordered. I then proceeded to dig through all three tacos to show him that there were no onions. He eventually conceded that there wasnt any and reluctantly got some. When we needed the check, I had to get up and find him. Then he dropped off the check and walked away so fast I had to go find him. And guess what. He was busy playing on his phone in the side room. Not paying attention to customers that wee waiting for him. That was the final straw. I am just completely over this place. It deserves negative stars for food and service. ORIGINAL: The only reason it gets three stars is for the beer selection, which is awesome. Their food is awful, so bland! Its Mexican food! Wheres the flavor!?!? Grew up in Texas where great Mexican food was on every corner so I understand why its hard to recreate here but its really not good. Their margaritas are also not great. They make their own sour mix thats so sweet its like drinking syrup. Margaritas have three ingredients (maybe four if youre making a flavored variety) and sugar is not one of them. Bartender argued about this with me when I asked for one to be made without the sweet syrup, and her answer was eventually that everyone here likes them sweet and this isnt Texas...ok...but thats still not a margarita.

Coming from an area where Jose Tejas is close by, it is hard to compare any Mexican Restaurant to it, but this restaurant was certainly not the worst. Service at the bar was questionable while waiting for a table, but I believe the guy was just having a bad night. As for the waiter, he was attentive and made good guacamole, which was made fresh to order and right at your table, just the way you like it. Prices were very cheap and that is what made the meal even better. Not the best flavor like Jose Tejas, but again, not a bad alternative. The margaritas were good and strong. They had a variety of flavors as well. The same can be said about the beer list and they had a nice craft selection, which was roughly about 15 local crafts. If I am in the area, I would certainly return based off the price, drink selection, and decent food. It is a small place, but provided a good atmosphere.

I moved to the area around a year ago and have spent some time trying to find some good Mexican food. While not quite on par with what one might find in San Diego or Texas, its pretty much the best I have had here in the tri-state area and a year of checking out different Mexican restaurants. I have been there several times since my first visit and the service has always been excellent and the food is tasty and fresh and reasonably priced. The decor is pleasant and the overall experience relaxing. Surprised to see some very negative reviews here but to each his own, I suppose. If you are looking for some good, fresh, Mexican food at a reasonable price, this is your place.

This was the first time that we were at the restaurant. Started out downstairs in the bar for a few beers. It was a Saturday night and kind of crowded so the two of us had to wait about 20-30 minutes - all in all not that bad. We got our table at the very top (the balcony) and everything was fantastic. Drinks (margaritas) and taquitos were delicious. Both of our main courses were large and we had to take them home (only so we could save room for dessert). My beef burrito was great and her Enchiladas del Sol were the talk of the dining area - my girlfriend became a spokes person for them. Service was great - thanks for the speedy, friendly service, Alex.

We used to go there for happy hour on Thursdays. It was nice...$2 margaritas. We had the great homemade chips and salsa. Wed order a few appetizers. But then the service got sloppy. Wouldnt pay attention when we called. Didnt replenish quickly, if at all. Mixed our order for dinner one time really badly...then didnt even offer to remove from check or even apologize. Just said, oh they must have made it wrong. Really? Not the way to handle situation. I liked it at first. Now wont go, even for the $2 margaritas. I value customer service...and there really isnt any there. Not good one, at least.

Their beer selections are always great and fun. This time, they have a mint stout and Melicks cider (alcoholic) and the bartender made me a delightful Black Velvet by mixing them. We had our favorite appetizer, Cajun dry rubbed wings and they were hot, fresh, and wonderfully spicy. We ordered the specials, I had the grilled octopus and my husband the grilled trout. Both dishes were perfect for the summer, came with mango sides. I eat grilled octopus wherever offered, and Sol Mexican Cantinas is one the very best. They have octopus as an appetizer. I highly recommend.
