We have been waiting to try Black Thorn pizza for a long time after hearing such good things and reading the raving reviews. Now, we are forcing ourselves to eat the leftovers three days later, so we dont waste food when there are starving people in the world. First, Im from Chicago. Born and raised. Relocated in Saint Louis. If you want a good Chicago style pizza, Pi is very good and as close to Chicago pizza you will get outside of Chicago. Black Thorn is not even close. We didnt mind the hour and forty five minute wait. We expected it and planned for it. After all, I am from Chicago. We were excited as we anticipated our pizza as my husband saw them hand-rolling dough in the back. A few drinks while we waited, and I shouldve thought the shittiest pizza was amazing, but this was not. Too much dough (like toppings literally stuffed between two layers of dough) and not enough sauce. Like I couldnt find any evidence of sauce, other than the overwhelming amount of dried oregano/basil. NOT CHICAGO PIZZA. Sausage was weird, and pepperoni was cheap. Plus side is they did use fresh mushrooms. Oh, and I saw a bug scamper across the floor while we waited. It was so dark and dingy in there that I couldnt see what it was., and I didnt want to chase it to find out. Thought about it, but decided Id rather not know. What the heck is all the hype about? People, if you think this is good, please go to Chicago, or at least to Pi. OMG.

I read reviews so I was well aware that the structure itself is a dive and I knew going in that it would be a long wait. I went in on a Friday evening so they were busy, 3 hours after walking through the door is when I got my pizza. Thin crust wont take as long but the Chicago style takes a long time. They dont seat you and dont take names to be seated. If all tables are full then you just stand somewhere and wait for a table to come open. Be ready to do battle for the table too :-). Again, I knew about the condition of the building and the wait so I was prepared. Keep these things in mind when you go here. If you are ok with it then I think youll enjoy it. Think about it, its all over the web about the wait and the condition of the structure and they are still packed! That tells you something, the pizza is worth it. The sauce is very unique, never had anything like it. Very good pizza and was glad I decided to give it a try. It was a unique experience.

i literally live right up the street from this dump of a dive-bar. the interior is miserable and is in severe need of a renovation. please...update your surroundings or clean it up. the exterior is also in severe need of tidying up and making more attractive. why they dont have outdoor space/seating on the front concrete slab or in their back i dont know. but this place could be so much more. i fear it drops the value of some of the single-fam houses on the block. okay, so now i will rail the pizza. salty, greasy, takes forever, ingredients seem stale and nothing unique. if your only claim to fame is a recreation of a regional pizza in a different city, that is not a good selling point. be creative and add the sparkle to your menu to make me want to come back for more. the best pizza = my homemade sourdough crust with good but simple ingredients. i think often too many restaurants try too hard to impress and fail in the process.

Fun atmosphere and that is probably Black Thorns best trait. The sauce has far too much oregano in it which makes it fairly inedible; but the pies are substantial size for the price (if they can get your order right). A really loud and piercing megaphone is used to announce whose food is ready, very unappealing. Came here because the reviews were good; left with pretty severe sense of disappointment. Plus, the pinball machines they have (only 2) were in pretty rough shape which made them not very fun to play. Id try somewhere else in the future...

Ive only dined in here once a long time ago, but definitely hit them up for pick-up/carry-out every now and then. They have a unique spicy pizza sauce that is quite delicious. I only ever get the Chicago style thick crust, so Im not sure if their thin crust is as good. I do wish that they had a website or somewhere with an up to date menu, as I fumble through the ordering process every time I call them. If you do decide to dine in, be forewarned that the place is a bit of a dive. Also, the pizzas take a bit of time (~45 minutes) to cook.

We ordered a thick crust pizza, waited an hour and picked it up and got home and found out it was a thin. When I called to complain they said the only thing they could do was refund the difference between thick and thin (thicks more expensive anyway, so that didnt even make sense) or make a us a new pizza. The new pizza wasnt going to be ready for an hour which would have made it nine oclock. Turns out their thin crust isnt a very good pizza either. Very disappointing and aggravating, will not order from them again.

Awesome pizza. Its a good break from the the mostly similar pizza places in St. Louis. I dont really like to call it Chicago style. Its similar, but not the same. But it is certainly really thick with lots of sauce, meat, and cheese. It takes a long time to make, but that just means you have to plan ahead. The pub portion of this place is very much a dive. Its dark, its small, and its homey. Its great if you like that sort of thing. We just pick up our pizza and take it home.

First, this is a dive bar, there are no frills here. Now that the city smoking ban has fully gone into effect, and the air is no longer thick with smoke, this is a decent place to bring the family for a pizza. Things can get pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights, so dont expect your pie to be ready in 30 minutes... youre looking at 60-90 minutes during peak hours. The drinks are cheap, and Denny is one helluva bartender.

I normally do not like a thick crust. However, I LOVE BLack Thorn pizza. Lots of cheese and FULL of flavor! If you are going to compare it with other Chicago style pizzas you will probably be disappointed.... only because it is different. Dont try this thinking it is going to be like something you are expecting! Dont be a pizza snob ... Try it because it is unique!

Pizza is good thick crust pizza. Cheesy garlic bread is amazing. The service is lackluster at best and unattentive at worst. And if you want cold beer at a reasonable price this aint that kind of place. Beer is usually warm, and pricey. Parking is dicey too: zero off street parking for blackthorn

Best and most unique pizza in St Louis. Chicago style deep dish, but far superior taste than what would be considered real Chicago pizza, because, well, its not topped with cold tomato soup. Sauce is great - flavorful with a kick. Pro tip: order before you arrive, as it takes about a hour.
