Been eating at Mexican Villa for over 40 years, and loving it. I live out of state now, but always make at least a couple stops when Im in town. This trip, for the first time in my life I have been sorely dissapointed, twice in the same week! Stopped for lunch at National, it was good, service was great, but the sauces tasted like watery vinegary catsup. Folks, I order their hot sauce by the case and have it shipped to my house because I like it so much. I know what Mexican Villa Hot sauce should taste like. I dont know what happened that caused the hot sauce and the mild sauce to be so awful. Even the sweet sauce tasted funny, but it was doable. The bad hot sauce though, that just ruined my lunch for me. So, when our group of 13 family members, most visiting from out of state as well, got together a couple of nights later, I suggested the one on Campbell, perhaps their batch of hot sauce would be more like what I am used to getting. We arrived and got our tables right away, but then things went sour fast. Even though there were plenty of tables and room in the area, they tried to squeeze 13 of us into a pair of tables that would only comfortably seat about 8. So we had to split up into 2 groups as they flatly REFUSED to allow us to slide a 3rd table over to join with the first 2, even though our entire party was pleading with them. There was a large area of water spilled on the floor right under our chairs on one side of the table, it was there when we arrived. We asked them to mop it up before we sat down, that took asking no less than 3 different people who seemed to just shrug it off. One of them comes carrying an orange cone out after quite a wait, sits it in the water puddle, where my 75 year old mother is waiting to sit down and says "there, just be careful and dont step in the puddle" unbelievable! Finally my mother demands for the water to be mopped up so we could sit down, "some one could slip" she says to waiter. Only then did a mop arrive. 1 hour after ordering, we finally get our food. They were busy, I get that. But they were rude and unwilling to be accomodating to our large party, that I dont get. We do this every year at Christmas, at Mexican Villa, and never had any problem in the past. It was an embarrasing situation, I just wanted to eat and get gone. Never, in my life have I left a restaurant without leaving a tip of some sort, and I consider myself a generous tipper. I got up and left here without leaving a dime. On a side note, the sauces did taste better, hence I begrudgingly give 1 star.

The only reason I gave one star is because Google wont let me give a zero star review, and I suppose because at least the waiter who served me was honest enough to inform me that this is not an authentic Mexican restaurant. The feeling I have received from my experience here is that this business is running solely for money; there is no passion or love in their food. The quality of the ingredients they use to put together menu items is like if you go to Walmart and search for the cheapest, most processed ingredients you can find. The water did not taste clean or good, worse than the unfiltered well water at my parents house in the countryside 25 miles east of Springfield. I couldnt drink any of the water because I found it so questionable. The flavorless rice had an incredibly repulsive tongue-activated odor of an old vacuum cleaner that has been run over carpet threading and operated to the point of carpet and motor burning. The refried beans were dried and crusted and as though they had been left out for days and microwaved to heat up. The lettuce on top was warm. The taco shell and meat filling both clearly indicated the cheapness of both quality and cost; they were rock bottom. The only thing that brought me out of this unpleasant experience was the tortilla chips in the basket that was brought to me after having been seated and given a menu. For the quality of ingredients, the food is incredibly overpriced. I couldnt eat my food, paid my bill and left. I did sample everything on my plate and I did try to force myself to eat but couldnt (as I was raised to eat everything off my plate leaving nothing behind). A part of me strongly wondered about the safety and cleanliness of the food, so out of health concerns I decided to save myself from potential food poisoning / other.

The following is a letter I emailed to the company: My husband and I are frequent customers at Mexican Villa. Our whole family enjoys the customer service and the food. However, tonight my husband asked the waitress if they give veterans discounts. Our waitress said yes but only to those in uniform. This was pretty upsetting to my husband and I as my husband proudly served in the army in the early to mid 80s and is now a disabled veteran. We were a bit concerned that waitresses believe men in uniform are considered veterans when they are actually active or reserve military. "A veteran is defined by federal law, moral code and military service as "Any, Any, Any"... A military veteran is Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch" I would request your company explain the difference between active and reserves and veterans as I am fairly certain some of the men from the Vietnam War and Desert Storm would not be able to wear their uniforms anymore and I certainly know my husband cannot wear his. :-) so if you give discounts to active and reserves then they should say that instead of saying they give Veterans discounts. I know this may seem petty to you but it isnt to those who have served and have retired or honorably discharged and started new paths in their lives. Bless all past present and future military personnel! You have our utmost respect!

**NOT MEXICAN FOOD, DO NOT EAT HERE IT IS NASTY TASTING** This has got to be the worst "Mexican" food in Springfield, my husband and I went there last night. The salsa was basically a habanero sauce that was hot, waiter (who was extremely nice but not the one that makes the nasty food) brought us 2 others one tasted like spaghetti sauce with sugar and the other was enchilada sauce like. Both were nasty, so the nice waiter brought cheese dip which was worse then then the salsa. Food came and thank goodness I just ordered a $1.99 Chicken taco which guess what? it had sweet sauce on it and really who wants a sweet taco? My husband ordered 1/2 burrito which had been drowned in enchilada sauce and was disgusting and we didnt eat any of it.. Manager came over and was no help said that is how it is made at warehouse (nothing fresh made at restaurant) and said he wish he would of known earlier? REALLY what could he have done early made the food better? didnt even offer anything or take the food off bill. Do Not Go Here!!! Not Mexican Food...

My husband and I are Mexican food fans... but NOT from this restaurant! We decided to give Mexican Villa a try and were not pleased. We got our basket of chips and salsa and the quality was awful. The chips looked as if they had been fried then left in the grease to keep warm and the salsa was watered down ketchup. I dont even remember what we ordered as we took only a couple bites before asking to speak for the manager and refusing to pay for our food. I ordered some sort of burrito that was stuffed with beans, rice and (supposedly) beef. It was COVERED and swimming in enchilada sauce which seemed to be their 1 sauce they used for everything. We gave it 2 stars because the service was good and the manager was understanding of our situation... but Ive never been to a Mexican restaurant that doesnt have a single Hispanic person working there. Youre better off driving the extra 20 minutes to Mt. Vernon to go to their family run, hole-in-the-wall Mexican place. Its INFINITELY better for less.
