I wanted to like Ypsi Ale House, I truly did. However, the very-limited menu, the prices, and the less-than decent beers made it hard to do so. First off, the beers: When you name yourself after a beverage, you better have a damn-fine offering to support it. I tried three beers; I sampled the IPA and the smoked honey Porter before settling on the imperial stout, unseen, none of which even came CLOSE to being representative of their style, nor were they good. They all tasted like a home brewer who got too excited too soon and decided to open a brewery on a whim, despite the fact that he lacked experience. Im not saying that this is what happened, but I know many home brewers, ALL of whom create better beer than this. Second, the food. My family and I are vegetarians, and the Ann Arbor and Ypsi area are RIPE with fantastic places that have plenty of vegetarian options. This should be a presedence, based on how many international families and students we have who maintain vegetarian diets for religious and/or health purposes. The vegetarian options here were deplorable. We ended up ordering cheese fries (clearly packaged fries, smothered in what appeared to be movie-theater cheese sauce, but we saved $1 since we didnt get the Chorizo!), Brussels Sprouts that might as well have been coated in caramel sauce, considering how sweet and incredibly sticky they were, Winter Salad (i.e. A plate of cold lentils, feta cheese, nasty eggplant strips, soggy pepper strips, and pickled onion (okay, the onions were pretty decent), and stuffed pepadew, which seemed pretty tasty compared to the other items. The service: to their credit, the staff are friendly and personable. However, this is a pub-style establishment, meaning you go to the bar to order food and drinks; no one seats you or comes to your table to take your order. This would be fine, despite the face that there were four people behind the bar at all times, when there could have been one, maybe two, with the rest providing hospitality to an otherwise not-busy bar. The ambience: the seats are comfortable, the restaurant was warm on an incredibly frigid day, and they have darts. However, the TVs are loud and hard-to-escape, if you wish to sit near the bar. Get rid of the televisions, theyre awful. I realize this is a newer establishment, so Ill leave the appearance and the paint-thinner smell upon entering the building alone, since they clearly are still in the process of remodeling. The prices are outrageous for the quality; I could have gone to Corner Brewing and spent the same amount of cash and had a FAR better experience; consider that a pro-tip AND an endorsement, free of charge. Altogether, I give Ypsi Ale House 2 stars.

I just went to a local restaurant and had dinner. And my only thought is: I dont understand why anyone would attend ypsilanti alehouse for the food. Its so bad. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and the meat is cold and so tough I may as well be biting a live pig. Their house made barbecue chips are so plain they wasted seasoning. The cole slaw was warm and had no pepper it just taste like dry cabbage. And their "meat soup" just smells like lentil and barley soup and no other flavor. They just need Gordon Ramsey in there or the guy from Bar Rescue to shut that it down or change that menu. Because Ive never been so disappointed in my life. I just wish I didnt eat dinner.

Went for lunch Sunday (right after grand opening). The beer was great and the food, smoked wings, was on par even though the kitchen was out of my first choice, brisket pot pie. The icing on the cake is that as we were closing out our tabs and attempted to leave a tip, we were informed by a staff member that all of the employees make a livable wage so they dont accept tips. What a great idea they have in paying their staff appropriately and not leaving it up to the consumer. I really enjoyed this concept of ordering a $10 plate and it costing $10... instead of $10 to the restaurant plus an arbitrary tip amount to the server.

Weve given the ypsi alehouse three chances now. Each time the food was either sub par or down right gross. Last night we waited an hour for our food. When our food showed up the grilled cheese was burnt (how do you burn grilled cheese), the burgers were disgusting grease balls and the chicken sandwich was lame. Everything looked thrown together and unfinished. I know that tip is included in the meal but I still feel that a $14 sub par burger (without fries) is steep. If you want a good burger, beer, and ambiance there are many other places in ypsi that offer exactly that at a lower price.

Fun, casual spot to enjoy a variety of lovingly crafted beers and delicious pub food. Took the family and enjoyed playing board games after dinner. The staff are helpful and genuine without being solicitous. You order at the counter and food is delivered to your table in reasonable time. They dont accept tips here because, according to the woman who served my tasty porter, "the employees make a living wage here." Knowing that added to the experience and may explain why they have such cool people working there. Ive now been there three times and look forward to the next visit.

Its far too difficult to have a sit-down meal here. You have to order at the bar, which - while inconvenient - isnt a deal breaker. However, when a few in my group wanted to order grilled cheese sandwiches (a larger portion of the menu), we were told that they didnt have any of the bread used to make them. So we put in an order for half our group while the other half tried to figure out what they wanted instead of grilled cheese, which ended up being confusing and disruptive for the poor people behind us waiting to simply order drinks.

One of my favorite places! The beers are all very good, and they offer cider as well which is great so your entire group can find something they enjoy. I love the blue racer beer (its a honey-wheat beer with actual blueberries in your glass YUM!). If youre not feeling alcohol, they have delicious sparkling water (I mixed two flavor a and got pear-vanilla). There food is lovely as well.... try the rosemary fries! Check out their website for details on live music and their happy hour ($2 off beer)

We finally got to check it out over the weekend on Friday night. Tried 3 beers and they were all really, really good. My wife and I split an appetizer and another item and they were delicious. The menu selections make you think - the combinations are unusual but work very well. I would go back. I hope there are larger crowds - the building is pretty big and the work they have done in there is very nice. This is definitely worth going visiting. Service and people were very good.

This is an interesting place. Great food and acceptable beer. The prices are spot on for what you get although some of the beers can feel a little light when drinking. I enjoy the pub style ordering of having to order at the bar and busing your own tables. I also enjoy that you are not supposed to tip there as the workers get paid decently enough. I find it weird that it never seems busy whenever I go, however.
