Well, iron skillet or no iron skillet it most certainly has dropped in quality over the years. My mother & I worked at the old Fraser location years ago before they even built the new building and quality was of the utmost importance to them then. Dee ran a tight ship and we had many regulars. Unfortunately the Macomb location doesnt even compare. My coworkers sometimes order lunch from the Macomb store and they NEVER mark on the box what the item is (just lazy & inconsiderate) and one of us is ALWAYS missing something or has the wrong order. The rice has no flavor and the beans are white and dry. Chili has some weird taste now. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the hot sauce, it cant even be called salsa anymore because I cant find any real tomato texture in it other than the occasional tomato peel. They used to make it fresh with real tomatoes. And to the owner/manager or whatever your title is, if you are going to argue that you still make your hot sauce homemade that may be true but you totally screwed up the recipe by going cheap. Ah yes. Go cheap. I will say that Esplindido in Shelby is relative to the Martin family and they USED to be really good, surprising because it was strictly carry out. Probably why they didnt cheap out on ingredients. Not sure if theyre still there, its been 8 years since I visited. Ponchos in Mt Clemens is ABSOLUTELY no better either, we ordered lunch from them one time and OMG what a disgusting mess that was-wont even waste the ink on the details. Just re-read the Macomb review. Oh well, cant be at the top of your game forever, I guess. Adios forever El Charro.

El Garbage Dumpo This was the worst so-called Mexican food we ever ate. The homemade puffy taco shells were the only thing we enjoyed here. The so-called ground beef reminded me of the Alpo dog food I used to give my dogs back in the 70s. The waitress didnt have a clue as to what kind of cheese went on the tacos. I asked if they had Chihuahua cheese or crumbly Queso Fresco, and she didnt know what the hell I was talking about. She also doesnt take orders well, because she screwed up my husbands order. He ordered a soft chicken taco, which was bland and too greasy. The steak filling was ok on the other taco. My Chili Relleno was awful. It tasted like they made a huge batch of peppers and put them in the refrigerator for a few days without any covering, or they simply heated up some prepackaged Chili Relleno they got a good deal on. The rice was overcooked and dried out, and the refried beans were obviously straight out of a can. My daughters werent happy with their tacos either. Needless to say, we are sticking to those little hole in the wall joints that are ACTUALLY AUTHENTIC, TAQUERIAS. I grew up in Chicago eating REAL AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD. El Charro is an unappetizing, tasteless joke. It is a real sad time we live in when people believe that El Charro serves real Mexican food.

Meh. We LOVE mexican food. We lived in South Texas and would visit Mexico often just to eat. We have lived all over the country and have enjoyed a lot of Mexican cuisine and "Tex-Mex". This is probably the lowest ranking Mexican food weve had. While we were eating, my husband said, "this must be Mich-Mex". The Fajitas are not served on the traditional cast iron, but instead just on a plate. I cant say weve ever seen that. Even most "regular" restaurants serve them on the cast iron skillets. I had the puffy tacos and they were different. Not terrible, the meat was bland, and the lack of toppings/choices was disappointing. My daughter just ordered beef nachos which had set under the heat lamp so long the cheese was more like rubber. She took one bite. The waitress was very nice and service was speedy. I was just expecting to enjoy more authentic mexican food. This is not the place if thats what youre looking for. Locals, however, seem to love it and would probably not much enjoy the real deal, although I could be wrong. I literally never leave reviews unless something is above and beyond amazing. This place just made me sad, and I felt like I needed to review it. I will say, their guac was good, but that was the only plus for my family and I.

In 2012 I lived in Chesterfield and this was my go-to Mexican Restaurant. Id get the ultimate nacho (I think its called) from the appetizer menu as my main entree. I took several dates here as well as friends - everyone was always happy and talked about the meal afterward. A few weeks ago my girlfriend was craving Mexican food and I knew she had never been here so I suggested it. It is a little bit out of my way these days but we had time and a full tank of gas so what the heck. Upon returning, I noticed that the prices went up across the board. There were two waitresses commanding the dining area and at least another 3 wait staff/bussers who were idle and seemed to be in awe of the pairs work ethic. We went in around 3pm on a Saturday and I dont think their A-Team was on the clock yet as the food and service seemed pretty flat in spite of all the overhead they had running about. I gave them another chance 6:30pm Thursday evening but was unable to rekindle the romance I shared with El Charros a few years prior. Good, but not great. Pricey. Just my $0.02.

Went there tonight for our 21st wedding anniversary. I dont know whats happened to this place but the service was terrible. When we were seated we werent greeted by our waitress nor did we get chips and salsa for 15 minutes. Its like we were invisible. We got our salad and dinner nachos after our dinner. Our waitress (Raquel) only came to check on us once and we were finished eating by then. We asked for boxes which she brought 10 minutes later but no bill. Then she disappeared for another 10 minutes and we got our bill. Im normally a big tipper because I waitressed when I was younger and know how hard it can be. This is the first time I havent wanted to tip a server. She got $2 because we didnt want to wait for her to bring back change. So disappointed. Weve been going there and taking our family there for years. We wont be going back.

Ordered online and had my boyfriend pick the order up. My online confirmation stated the order was $41, but we were charged $53. Plus we were missing an item. When I called they were able to refund the additional money that we were charged and for the item we were missing. However the manager seemed annoyed by the situation and was not very pleasant about it. Once I hung up the phone, we started to eat. Both of us ended up scrapping the meat from the tacos into a plate to eat with the tortilla chips, since the taco shell was absolutely disgusting. Needless to say, $40 later and we are both still hungry. From start to finish, it was a bad experience.

I love El Charo. The service is always good and the puffy Tacos are my favorite. Great place that is comfortable and pretty good overall. No its probably not the most authentic Mexican food in the world but not being authentic doesnt mean bad.. You can be authentic and taste terrible or you can put your own spin on things and taste great. Im not sure if it is authentic or not (sorry, Ive never been to mexico) but El Charo tastes great and the service has always been great as well.
