I went into Poor Richard’s Café on Sunday and I can’t complain about the waitresses or the food. It was good and prompt, and the waitresses were friendly. However, I was absolutely appalled at the way I was treated by the man who took my money at the counter. I had ordered hot water and put my own tea bag in it. I do this mostly because predominately restaurants use Lipton tea, which contains corn starch and I am very allergic to corn starch. So when we received our bill, we were charged for tea and I assumed the waitress made a mistake and forgot that she hadn’t given me tea. It was Sunday and decently busy, and mistakes are definitely made. At the counter, I pointed it out to the older gentleman at the counter, and kind of laughed saying I sound so cheap but I used my own tea bag, I didn’t order any tea. Instead of just saying “I’m sorry, but that is our policy”, I received an extremely rude attitude saying that if I bring my own tea I still have to pay for it. Disagreement with the policy aside, it was only a question and I absolutely did not deserve the rudeness. A simple explanation would have sufficed and I would have known for future visits. I also felt that he seemed surprised when I still tipped my waitress more than 20%, which also seemed like a completely unnecessary way for him to behave. I wasn’t being cheap; I was looking out for my very severe allergies. I absolutely do not deserve to be spoken to it such a manner and I absolutely will never be back to Poor Richard’s.

I need to clear something up my wife made a review here that I had her remove because of misinterpretation, her review was not a reflection of her feelings about the restaurant it was that of a customer . That being said poor Richards is a great place for family and friends the servers are amazing the cooks are very good and the bus service is prompt this establishment would make a great stop for everyone. And while you are here not forget to check out the fish tank and try to find the eel. So weather youre out running errands, or just hungry and want great food for low cost swing on in to my favorite restaurant in Kalamazoo "POOR RICHARDS CAFE!!!!!!!!

Pros: Low, low prices. Super-fast service, even when its busy. Friendly waitresses. Delicious food, with a wide selection. They leave a coffee carafe at your table -- no waiting for refills. Cons: This is really picky, but I think they undercook their hash browns. If youre allergic to cigarette smoke, dont come here. The non-smoking area is fully open to the rest of the restaurant, and they sell cigarettes at the front counter.. I dont think anything on the menu qualifies as remotely healthy, but its not really that kind of place. Overall, Id say its the best diner in town, and definitely great value for your money.

My daughter always wanted to stop at Poor Richards. So i surprised her this morning and took her on a mother/daughter date. I just left there and my hamburger was under cooked and I believe it was the owner who got mad because I didnt want them to put that same burger back on the grill to be recooked. He said to me well find then, it wasnt nice doing business with you. When I went to pay, he threw my change on the counter. I dont recommend going to this restaurant and Im sure as helllllllll never going back to this company again.

Food was good. But while eating the atmosphere had little bugs flying at my plate and a little red bug was frozen into a ice cube in my drink. Disgusting. Ruined the fact that the food was good. Cashier seen the bug frozen into the ice cube and said "I dont know how that got there" and proceeded to tell me my total. Very low class of a restaurant. 6/29/17

I have enjoyed eating here since i was a little boy, i have enjoyed food in over 9 different countries and spent over a 100$ on some plates and still the food, service, atmosphere, price, decor, and people at poor richards beat them all hands down.

Poor Richards is famous for their fast, affordable breakfasts. This isnt gourmet cuisine - its good, all American bistro food. The pancakes are amazing, as is the sausage and biscuits. Parking can be a little tight, but its completely worth it.

I have been here a few times. Food is excellent! I have experienced poor service on one visit, the waitress did not receive a tip and I was sure to let them know why. I will return here to eat because the food is great and the price ia low.
