The fact that so many books still name the Holly Donut Shop as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" donut shop ever only tells you how far donuts still are from becoming a serious art. Bagel critics have long recognized that the greatest bagel crafters of all times are Tim Hortons and Big Apple, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Pancake critics rank the highly controversial iHop over pancake crafters who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Donut critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Holly Donut Shop sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Bagel critics grow up eating a lot of bagels of the past, pancake critics grow up eating a lot of pancakes of the past. Donut critics are often totally ignorant of the donuts of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Holly Donut Shop did anything worthy of being saved. In a sense, the Holly Donut Shop is emblematic of the status of donut criticism as a whole: too much attention paid to commercial phenomena (be it paczkis or eclairs) and too little to the merits of real donuts. If somebody crafts the most divine donuts but no major company picks him up and sells him around the world, a lot of donut critics will ignore him. If a major label picks up a donut crafter who is as stereotyped as can be but launches her or him worldwide, your average critic will waste rivers of ink on her or him. This is the sad status of donut criticism: donut critics are basically publicists working for major corporations, distributors and donut stores. They simply highlight what product the donut business wants to make money from. Hopefully, one not-too-distant day, there will be a clear demarcation between a great donut craftsman like Tim Horton, who never sold much, and commercial products like the Holly Donut Shop. At such a time, donut critics will study their donut history and understand which crafters accomplished which feat, and which simply exploited it commercially. The Holly Donut Shops "Aryan" donuts removed any trace of black donuts from donut shops. It replaced syncopated African cream with linear Western frostings, and lusty negro attitudes with cute white-kid smiles.

If you love donuts and have not tried the Holly donut shop... then your life quite simply is not complete! :-) this place is fantastic whats best about it is that its nothing fancy its just good old homemade fresh donuts every morning expect to pay a little over $11 a dozen which is well worth it considering what you get. The glazed cinnamon rolls are by far my favorite so give them a try youll be very happy that you did! Just an FYI for visitors it is a cash only stop so be prepared

I am not exaggerating when I say the Holly Donut Shop has the best donuts in the world. Weve lived in Holly 24 years and have traveled all over the United States, Canada, and even parts of Europe. We have never found donuts quite as good as the Holly Donut Shop.Their long johns/chocolate covered custard/custard filled eclairs are to die for. They are light, but still with substance. If you live anywhere near here or are traveling through the area, stopping here is a MUST.

Not always consistent, theyre SO sugary, theres NO chocolate donut and the coffee wasnt good either of the 2 times Ive had it. The texture of the cake donut is good (i prefer the plane or powdered), the whipped cream long johns and bowties are good too but again, sugary! I actually get bowties frequently that are soggy from the glaze. If you like sweet (i mean come on, it is a donut) theyre good.

The donuts here are out of this world. Absolutely delicious. They do however only accept cash or check. Its 2016 and with paypal and square so easily available they still do not accept debit/credit cards. Plus they make one batch a day and close up after its sold out. But get there with cash in hand in the AM and you will not be disappointed!

Best Boston creme Donut around. Bar none!! If you are within 30 minutes of this place, and enjoy a soft warm Donut, do yourself a favor, and swing by. it is the perfect setting for that small hometown feel. Sunday mornings are great, if you really want to get the feel of this quaint village.
