Google says what did I like about it . I have worked in the cooking and culinary industry for over ten years. I have also been cooking breakfast and other meals for myself since the age of 8. And the food at when I was 8 years old was better than this crap. Im saying this food is not worth it ! The food taste like it was donated and reheated 5 times. I really adore coneys and chilli cheese fries. At best I will rather eat a bologna sandwich with cheese. Im sorry Detroit please go to "LAFAYETTE CONEY TWO DOORS DOWN" YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHEN A CONEY HAS A SNAP AND THE CHILLI TASTE LIKE ACTUAL EFFOET THE LEAST OF MAKING IT HOT FOOD TEMP THE LEAST. AMERICAN CONEY IS NOT A PLACE TO EVEN INDULGE. IN A SIMPLE AMERICAN QYOTE ON UN QUOTE HOT DOG WITH A SNAP ABD CHILLI WITH A BITE ABD STEAMY FRESH UNWRINGLED DRY BUN. PLEASE DONT GO HERE IT SUCKED HORRIBLY! THE PLACE LOOKS SOMEWHAT INVITING BUT GUESS WHAT LOOKS ARE DEFINITELY DECIEIVING IN THIS MATTER 2ND AND LADT TIME EVER GOING HERE TO HAVR ANYTHING. Would have giving it 0 STARS BUT YOU CANT DO THat.

I was just at american coney island yesterday and was not very pleased. I had 10 other people in my party and it took 10 minutes for the waiter to come over and start cleaning off the tables for us. We waited about another 10 minutes for the waiter to come back and take our order. When he came back he told us that we could only get the coney island hotdog, coney loose burger, chicken wings or chili. Out of the 24 things on their menu we could only get 4. The waiter brought our food pretty quickly, with the exception of our drinks. He brought our drinks about 10 minutes after we got our food. I got the coney island hot dog and it was pretty good and my fries were okay. When you looked on the floor it looked like they never sweep or mop the floors. While we were eating the people next to us left, this was when we just got our food, the waiter never while we were there cleaned off their table. I wouldnt be suprised if i saw a rat run across the floor.

Not too long ago my husband and I took on the Coney challenge for Detroit (Lafayette vs American). In comparing the chili dogs American has a hot dog with a natural casing giving you that snap that in my opinion is a must with a great chili dog, whereas Lafayette does not have the natural casing and therefore is missing a key ingredient. However, Lafayette took the win in my opinion with the chili sauce. The sauce here paired nicely with the hot dog and is exactly what you are looking for in a sauce. As such, when it comes down to it I would give Lafayette the win due to the fact that the chili is prepared and made by the establishments. Even though I love a good natural casing, the hot dog is not made at the restaurant. If Lafayette ever served a hot dog with a natural casing this would take the chili dog here from just good to great. I would recommend going and making your own opinion whose chili dog is the best, a Detroit must!

I have never experienced worst service in my life. On 4/5/09 early a.m. the manager refused to open the door. He literally had the door locked with customers inside. After knocking I asked why i was not being let in and served. To which he replied he was too busy. I quickly did a head count and found approx. 15 unoccupied tables. Apparently my money is not green enough. So instead i waited in line next door to lafayette and was seated and served immediately (extremely fast turnover). As a Detroit native I will never support American Coney Island again, and will direct any and all inquires next door to THE TRUE DETROIT CONEY ISLAND: LAFAYETTE!

My order of cheese fries were sogy, the cheese only 1/2 melted fresh out of the microwave lol, i could have made them better with leftover wendys fries at home. the server brought my girlfriend chilly fries instead of chilly cheese fries, when we pointed this out she checked our order and acknoledged we were right and we were brought a plate of shredded cheese to add to the fries.... wow. She only had a few bites of her gyro, the meat was completely dried out. Our friends ordered hot dogs and chilly dogs which were luke warm at best. There was only one server for the entire resturaunt. We will not be returning. I would give it a 0 if I could.

The staff was great the food was great but the parking is terrible havent been downtown Detroit in a long time didnt really see any parking meters that I thought was a parking meter saw a sign that said one hour parking so I thought that it was okay to park there for an hour but when I got out found a parking ticket for not paying for a parking meter when into asked where the meter was at and I said see that big blue thing in the middle of the of the sidewalk thats a parking meter for all the parking down the side love the food but I will never go back. That was the most expensive lunch that I had in my lifetime ticket was $45

American Coney Island is the bigger brother in terms of size/revenue when compared to their rival next door. According to the Detroit city directories, American was established in 1936. Upon first entering youre greeted by an explosion of color and decor. From the intense use of the American theme, to their many framed pictures of history, theres something intriguing on every wall. Its quite the scene. Their coneys are delicious. A Dearborn hotdog on a steamed bun, with loose chili, mustard, and onions, makes me hungry just thinking about it. Come on by for a bite, you wont regret it.

If youre in the mood for an ol fashioned Detroit-style Coney Island dog, this is the place to come. Tourists take note - This place serves coneys, and they do an excellent job at it. Delicious, plump hot dogs with greek chili, mustard, and chopped onions. This isnt the place to come for a long list of menu options, but if youve never had a true coney dog, its a great opportunity. Very fast service too! Even when theyre busy, Im usually greeted within a couple minutes, and after ordering, the food has always come out in less than 5 minutes.

Cleaner, fancier pricier and more suburban than Lafayette. The food is fine for what it is, but they kind of miss what this whole downtown coney thing is all about. They simply cannot match the atmosphere at Lafayette. However they do take credit cards so if you do not have cash, come here. Besides, the first time or two that you try to go to Lafayette, you will end up walking in to American instead. It is confusing, especially after a few drinks. Since you are already inside, may as well eat here this time and try Lafayette next time.

I went there and waited for service. As soon as they finished with the lady in front of me they ignored me. The place was fully staffed and this was during an off peak time (they were not busy at all). As soon as I stepped up to make my order after the lady in front of me, they all walked off as if I wasnt there. I waited for a while but, no one helped me. At that point I just walked out and went to the adjacent Lafayette Coney Island where the service has proved to be way, way better!
