Forget “wow” factor, “Masala Cafe” Westborough MA 01581, could not even live up to deliver “vanilla (very basic)” quality and service - Grossly “over-promise & Undeliver” – not fit as a food outlet (catering or in-house). NO minimum standards Going into details… We happened to order from this restaurant for a very special event of ours on 2nd July,2017. But we were immensely disappointed and frustrated with the experience and their bleak response on our feedback, thereafter. We want to highlight just a few of many displeasures that we experienced on this occasion…. 1. Late delivery of items at the venue: - As we had tight schedules to adhere to, the delivery of food was requested and promised at 12:00 noon sharp, during our pre-negotiations. But they came at 12:45 pm. By that time most of us were engaged with guests, who started arriving at the party. This gave us very little scope to pay attention to the items that were delivered, as our focus was on the guests at that time. We had no reason to even suspect on the accuracy of food items delivered and their quantities. 2. Unprofessional & Irresponsible delivery: - The food was brought to the venue by a driver of their delivery vehicle. We had to request a couple of our own guests to unload. When we requested the driver for help to arrange the buffet, he mentioned that there would be a helper from the restaurant arriving shortly at the venue to help us out in arranging the buffet. He quickly left the place, without helping us. We waited for that so-called “helper” to turn up. But no one ever did. We had to request volunteers from our guests to assist us to arrange the dishes for the buffet. 3. Undelivered Items: - To our dismay, there were certain items that were not delivered…namely… ”salan” and “raitha” (for biryani). This was very embarrassing, as we all know how biryanis taste without these accompaniments. We had to be apologetic to the guests on this inadequate complacency 4. Delivery of wrong item(s): - We asked for “stuffed” Mirchi Bajji and got plain bajji – very unpleasantly surprised. 5. Weird look of specific item: - over burnt and in dark brown color of bajji. An experienced hotelier among our guests had strongly opined that such weird colors appear when leftover items of the previous day are re fried next day. Totally unacceptable by any standards. 6. Inadequate quantities: - Gongura mutton, Hariyali Chicken, Butter Chicken were supplied in very inadequate quantities. During negotiations, we categorically mentioned that the guest count would be100 plus. The owner of the restaurant is fully briefed that majority would be non-vegetarians, as the occasion suggests. But we were disappointed to note the quantity of food was insufficient and only about 50% of the guests were able to consume to their full appetite. 7. Overall experience: - The taste of most of the food items was okay. But this was overshadowed by the fact that the food was inadequate for all the guests, who showed up that afternoon 8. Feedback: - We were at the restaurant on 4th July,’2017 to settle the bills and to give our feedback on the experience. The owner and his wife were at the restaurant. It appeared that the owner knew the purpose of our visit and prompted his wife to speak to us. We were shocked to witness an obnoxious hospitality towards us and a hostile attitude to receive our feedback comments. She had a very arrogant approach and was not even ready to accept our comments. We have enough evidence to back up the above comments, if need be.

Update: I was forced to this restaurant as a family member had organized a get-together here. The service has improved. So, I decided to update the review. ======================================================== Terrible customer service, Dont bother visiting. We went at time when it was not busy and the place was pretty empty. We placed an order of 4 items at 7.40PM (We have to prepay and wait for items). All of the items usually take a total of 15 min to prepare. 7.45PM we get an item delivered to our table which we didnt order. They messed up and sent someone elses order to us. Anyway, we sent it back and waited for our items. 3 items arrived by 8PM. By arrived I mean, they just bring the plate and bang it on the table and leave as if we are waiting for food in jail. (Silly me for expecting customer service! Wish I had not tipped them initially). They forgot the 4th item for the next 30 minutes. We reminded them at 8.15PM, but they hardly cared. We also see that some came at 8PM and placed the order which contained the item we were waiting on (4th one) and they got it by 8.15PM. We decided to call it quits at 8.30PM and went to counter to cancel the remaining order. Instead of owning up to the mistake, they said Indo-Chinese takes time to prepare! (Nonsense.. They screwed up the order and gave it to someone else). I said cancel the order and refund the money. No sorry, no apologies! Bottom line, never going here again.

So, this is the third time I have been to the Masala Cafe. Firstly the concept is slightly different than run of the mill Indian restaurants in and around Boston. Which is very refreshing. Its a casual sit down with a mix of Indian restaurant staple dishes and few days special dishes. The todays special dishes keep the excitement going for the visitors. Its not a cheap buffet place. Now the food, I have tried dahi puri, Chicken Chettinad, Butter Chicken, Hyderabad Chicken Biriyani. The butter chicken and Chettinad chicken were good and tasted fresh unlike most others where the premade curry is mixed with boiled meat.It comes with Naan and rice both. I liked the dahi poorI too. It was a lot better than the neighboring mithas. Biriyani was flavorful, but I wouldnt rate it top class. Service is prompt and friendly.

Visited with my family here for the first time. We ordered 3 dishes and got just 2 dishes. We reminded them twice about our third dish and still they dint bother to cater us. We waited for almost an hour and still dint get the dish and when we decided to leave the guy at the counter tells us they will "start" preparing the dish now, when we told them we are not ready to wait anymore he told us we can leave if we wish to! Absolutely unapologetic about their service and staff is also not very courteous. If you are hungry and want to grab a quick bite DONT GO HERE, unless you want to die of starvation.

Masala cafe catered food for our baby shower in Natick. They were fantastic all around. Right from selecting the menu which is "hugee" by the way to delivering and setting up the food for the event. Ganesh & Bhaskar worked hard to make the whole process super easy. We tasted many items before finalizing and they were able to customize some as we needed. One of the comments from the guest was "this is the one of the best catered food they had". Whatever you do make sure that mango rasmalai is part of your menu. I will use their services again for our next event.

I am writing this review after throwing my take-home food from Masala Cafe into the trash can. On 5/25/2016, I ordered 1 Dahi Puri and 1plate samosa. When I got home, the samosa looked as it it had been reheated and it had turned into a stone. My teeth started shaking when I took a bite. Thats how hard it was. The Dahi Puri was disgusting. I went here because some people told me the food here is good. After throwing my food in the trash can, I realize they were wrong. I am never going to order or pick-up food from this place again. Disgusting!
