Went to Umi Japense steak house last night, a local restaurant in Swansea. Was looking forward to a long, overdue girls night out. My 3 friends were completely agreeable to go with my choice. We ordered a drink each and 2 orders of maki. Soon after our main dish was served one friend found a hair wrapped around a shrimp on her plate. I watched her unwind the thing. It was gross. We all promptly stopped eating our meals. We had ordered the same dinner, chicken and shrimp. It was all prepared together, brought out, cooked and served. We all immediately lost our appetites. When I quietly informed our served she came over and said the "manager" (who is actually the female owner) would take ONE meal off the bill. I explained none of us were going to eat our meals given what we had witnessed. The owner came over and demanded to see the piece of hair. She yelled at us flapped her arms up and down, slapping her thighs and said "theres a lot of money here". I told her we would gladly pay for what we ate, but since we werent going to eat food with hair in it, we didnt feel we should pay for the meals. She accused us of "filing up" on rice ....thankfully we hadnt eaten much of the rice either. We are all 40+, successful, working women, who certainly can pay for a meal. When I pointed out I am a regular customer who has never complained, always paid my bill and left a generous tip, she agreed, but then she yelled "yes, but you never come back". She said she was going to call the police. I told to go ahead and that we would wait for them to arrive. She brought the cook out and said "he has short hair so where did it come from?". Really? We are paying diners, not CSI Swansea. You figure out where it came from. We paid for what we ate and drank and as we were finishing our drinks she came over and yelled at us to stop drinking yelling she was telling to do so because the drinks too, were dirty and then she yelled at us to get out. We finished our drinks quickly and began to leave. She stared at us the entire walk out. I asked her if she was all set or if we should wait for the police. She told us to leave and yelled we were "IMMORAL!". Really? For pointing our there was hair in our food? The rest of our night was ruined. I felt so bad because the place was my idea. Since they moved to their new location they have gone downhill FAST. There was no need for the way she acted. She was crazed. Ive worked in the food service industry. Things happen. Errant hair happens...learn from it, apologize for it, certainly correct it and move on. To berate a loyal customer for bringing it your attention is inexcusable! Needless to say we will never go back.

We were passing through Swansea and love sushi so we stopped by Umi for sushi. Tea cold. Soup cold. Greasy teapot. Tea tags floating in the pot of yea. Salad was scraps of lettuce, small tomato with orange glop for dressing. Smokey environment from hibachi cooking. Window shades all lopsided. Bitchy and unfriendly waitress. We walked out because it took over a half an hour and we still hadnt received our main course and with what we had already experienced we were afraid about what we were going to get. We ordered sushi which usually doesnt take very long to be served in other sushi restaurants. Horrible. Seriouly do not go.

Would not return or recommend. Weve eaten at many Japanese steakhouses all over the country and didnt know the food could be this disappointing, especially considering the high prices. The main flavor was salt, not even soy sauce. The so-called ginger dressing on the anemic salad was some grainy orange stuff that had very little to no taste of ginger. The clear soup tasted like salt water, not broth. The huge mound of rice and scrambled egg tasted stale. Several of us pushed the food away after picking at it, exchanging incredulous looks. A dismal experience. Mrs. Dixon

Horrible. , would never go back. The prices were ridiculous. The service was bad, ...If you do NOT sit in the middle where all the chefs are doing "their things"....you basically get ignored and shitty service. The place was NOT clean, ..floor filthy, though not busy. Food was...just ok, ...Nothing more than ok. Want decent jap food, ..have to go to Boston or Providence...but this place ..really sucked. (this was same opinion of all those in our party as well.

Weve been going since Umi was in its previous location. Sushi and sashimi have always been great, though it usually takes a while for the order to arrive at the table - just a heads up, not something we have a problem with. My husband prefers rolls and the green hat maki is an instant order every time. Theres one not so great waitress, but its become something of a joke in our social group and doesnt deter us from returning again and again.

If you want to go somewhere with awesome food for a good price go to Umis. This place is to die for. The fried rice here is delicious, and honestly, might be my favorite part of the dinner, despite the fact that everything else is also very good. I will admit that the alcohol leaves something to be desired, but all in all, Im there for food, not to get drunk.

Have been going here for years, small family owned place, very friendly and food is always great and consistant. Love the sushi, and hibachi is always yummy. Easily rivals the more expensive counterparts, less glitz, more bang for your buck. Recommend to all friends and family, always go there for a girls night out too :)

Waitress was a complete jerk as soon as my party and I walked in. Food was over priced and portions were very small. No star would be better not to mention the restaurant was absolutely filthy. I have gone there in the past. It wasnt as bad. It is absolutely horrible. I do not recommend anyone go to there!!

Best flavor and serving size of teppanyaki for the price. Wonderful serving sizes in a very family friendly atmosphere (not the dark over-decorated type of place either). Always packed, so reservations may be helpful.

You have to sit at the hibachi table and watch the chef do tricks like pop food into your mouth and throw utensils around. The food is amazing and its cooked right in front of you. This is a family fave!

Great tasting hibashi. My family and I came here for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised to find this gem so close to home. Definitely check out Umi next time youre in the mood for hibashi.

Admittedly, I frequent here because its the closest hibachi to me. That being said, I never leave disappointed. Always a solid go-to. Good for kids, great for adults. Add a side of noodles!
