Honestly, I dont understand a lot of the bad reviews for this takeout restaurant. Keep in mind, this is a takeout restaurant; you come here for some quick, delicious food, not a luxurious dine-in experience. That being said, they make their food really well for the price. The orange chicken is one of my favorite things there - the skin is crispy and tangy on the outside, while the meat inside is soft and juicy. Many other restaurants - even sit down restaurants - serve orange chicken that is 90% breading, with no meat inside. Red House gives you your moneys worth with this chicken. I love the transparency of the kitchen - its really easy to see everything that happens in the preparation of your food, and it looks like the cleanest Chinese restaurant ever. All the food is made fresh, on the spot - none of that frozen and defrosted crap. Egg rolls are also amazing, with plenty of filling that makes each one very satisfying. Obviously, as a Chinese takeout restaurant, this is as good as it gets - it fulfills your craving for Chinese food, isnt so unhealthy that you want to cry about it afterwards (some dishes are actually pretty nutritious), and tastes amazing. Give it a shot, especially if youre a broke college student!

This place served me the worst meal of my life—no exaggeration. Not what I ordered, scant flavor, burnt, and a case of food poisoning to really top it off. Having never ordered here before, I ordered General Gaus with a side of fried rice, a reliable, consistent default option. When I got back home I opened the container to discover fried chicken fingers (like what youd get at McDonalds, only partially cooked so the "crust" was doughy and soft). No sauce. Definitely NOT General Gaus. Decided to eat it anyway. The first bites quickly revealed an exceptionally nasty burnt aftertaste—like rancid, burnt cooking oil and possibly chemicals. Starving as I was I could only manage a few bites before throwing everything away. I got sick shortly afterward and was in bed for most of the following day with a bad stomach, raging headache, and general weakness. Wish Id read the other reviews before trying this place. I just wanted cheap, reliable Chinese food. How is it possible to F**k that up? Visit Red House and see for yourself.

I have been ordering Chinese food from Red house since I was a kid. I grew up down the street from them. I am simply at a loss of over the negative reviews. It is like there is a coordinated campaign against them or something. The portions are ALWAYS huge, the food is always hot, the prices are fair and they are a family owned local business. These are good people who have been in Union Square since 1978. GIve them a break before you try to hurt their business with a vile review. I just ordered from them two minutes ago and they gave us two free apps. They are friendly and generous people. Take it from a local and not a miserable local transplant who had a single bad experience and wants to trash this restaurant online. These reviews are not appropriate. Seriously give this place a try - you will not be disappointed.

Puzzled at all the nasty reviews, didnt think this place was so bad...key here is speed and convenience. I also make a point of showing up in person and being nice to the counter guy, who btw is not particularly good at English which probably accounts for many of the issues other reviewers have cited. Anyway, I would never call this super duper Chinese food, but its the only place in the area open till the wee hours of the morning, and one $8-10 entree can easily feed 2-3 people (unless you eat like a pig), so I cant complain. Stick to the simple dishes like the boneless pork ribs or beef and broccoli plate and youll be ok.

Seriously. This is some of the worst chinese food around. I feel like we were swindled. I think their menu was one of the ones that we found in our mailbox and we just stuck it in the pile with the other menus. Tonight, we ordered the General Gaos chicken and the Teryaki chicken with tofu and vegetables. It was all disgusting. No kidding, we threw it in the trash and ordered from another place. Now were out $20 bucks, but at least well have a decent dinner. I almost feel bad for leaving such a harsh review, but really, these guys shouldnt be selling food; at least not human food.

Ive always ordered from this restaurant in the past for convenience sake, but I cant say the food was anywhere to close to being good. BUT I went in today after a few months off from this place, and I have to say, the food greatly improved. I ordered orange chicken and beef teriyaki and both were amazing. I was actually able to fully enjoy a meal here for once. The store must be under a new manager or the old one really upped his game, but they now have decent chinese food worth trying. Will go again.

Almost 30 minutes late and, unfortunately, the worst Chinese food that Ive ever eaten and Im from Ohio. Spring rolls were dried out and had hardly any stuffing beyond the fried wrapping. The lo mein was dried out and lacking flavor. And the crab rangoon was flat, dry and hardly had any stuffing. The only thing that saved the order was the Stir Fried Vegetables because those were perfectly ordinary. Id had much higher hopes!!

We tried Red House because they left a menu on our door. It was terrible and will not order from there again. Generally I think that all Chinese food tastes the same, but this food was dry and bland, loaded with grease and tasted as if if had been sitting out all day. The chicken fingers tasted more like McDonalds french fries. It may be cheap, but it is not worth your money.

Yeah, pretty awful. Unless its changed drastically in the couple of years since I moved to Union Square, this is one of the worst Chinese takeout places Ive ever been. Dont be fooled. Red House is not even "good bad" in the way that Chinese takeout is supposed to be. They cant EVEN get fried chicken in corn syrup sauce right...

They sent me undercooked chicken fingers, over cooked crab ragoon, And egg foo young that tasted like fish! They are going to replace it three days later! And he was not so nice as he hung up on me! And I dont really want to eat it now, A bit afraid what they may do to it?

If this is your only alternative, consider fasting. You will anyway, unless you prefer to be sick. Ordered two dishes, both went to garbage after few bites. I did not know that it was possible to "cook" something like that. Wow ...

Are you drunk? Is it late? Have you ever seen them preparing food? This place had a freezer malfunction because they misread the wattage on their breaker ... didnt seem to stop them from selling food.
