Was staying nearby and craving sushi, didnt want to drive into Boston, ate here for first 1st time last night (on a Saturday). Place is unassuming, decorations look tired, restaurant half full, ordered our usual standards, very used to great Japanese food in NYC area, was a little disappointed. Fish was very fresh, ordered deluxe sashimi, pieces cut roughly and entire presentation country-ish or homestyle with abundance of carrot sticks and kale as decoration. Nothing fancy on plate, no shiro leaves, no daikon, no tamago (how you judge a place), wasabi not pressed as leaf shape or ball, no banana leaf, just raw carrot slivers everywhere. Lots of regular tuna and salmon, little else. Did include one small ikura and two eel. This makes it deluxe worth 30$. Husband got salmon teriyaki and it was very good. Salmon was cut into nuggets instead of fillet. Also got udon soup for kid. Noodles looked too thin. Square. Not usual ones. (Not soba either). They forgot to bring our edamame. I told waiter no mustard on shumai, it had it anyway. But did not have the usual dipping sauce. Ordered fried eggplant appetizer, was cut roughly and drowned in sweet miso topping. Tasted good though. Miso soup had thinly sliced mushrooms-yum! Full of older well to do regulars, they must be easy to please. Some discussing trip to Japan, was surprised they are happy here after that. Older lady server was very attentive, service was good. Younger male server more unpolished. Happy to see staff is actually Japanese. Green tea ice cream (only kind dessert available) was really good and large portion but no presentation, just scooped into big bowl. Basically, it is like eating in someones home who tries to treat you well but it is simple fare and family style, not fancy. Ok if you live here but do not try to impress anyone by bringing them here. Would not repeat this with so many other places to go to. Went because they got such high reviews and were nearby. Its not bad, but its not fancy either. Price tag over 100$ as usual for us but felt this time not worth it. Next time Ill drive. Sorry.

The Shogun has been consistently excellent for decades. The sushi chef and the waitresses are friendly, informal, and helpful. The quality of the sushi went through a decline for a while about 5 -- 10 years ago, but it has steadily improved over the past few years and is now as good as ever. Its a great family restaurant -- kids are welcome and greeted with the same enthusiasm as their parents. Dont expect snazzy decor or the most fashionable sushi creations --- go pay twice as much somewhere else if you want them --- the Shoguns the place for reliable fine food.

This is the best sushi that Ive ever had! We did not have to wait too long for the food considering that its made to order. The food was presented very nicely, and the waitress was very nice. The salmon tastes very tender and flavorful, unlike many other Japanese restaurants. This restaurant is about 30 years old, and the food is prepared by a Japanese chef, who has been working at Shogun since it opened!

stopped here at random on my way down from New Hampshire to providence. This is hands down better than any other sushi restaurant Ive eaten from. The tuna is fatty and chunky. Unagi is my favorite dish so far. Only complaint is that its too far away from where I live and prevents me from going weekly or more. Looking forward to try the dream roll and uni when its back in season.

My neighborhood Japanese restaurant is the real thing: quality food prepared in the traditional way by a Japanese sushi chef. You might have to wait while Ito creates his beautiful meals. Sometimes its quiet, other times its packed, with take out orders to be prepared. Ito works quickly, but never sacrifices quality for quantity. It is worth the wait.

Love this place! Super authentic hole in the wall with tons of charm. Some of my favorites: Fresh uni, sweet dream roll, tamago, futomaki.. All the sauces and dressings are home made and really good. Even little stuff like the house salad. They always have parking in the back too which is a big plus.

True authentic Japanese food by a local Japanese family. Sushi rolls missing a little flare, and supply could be a little fresher. Nicest staff

Excellent food, great service, nice ambiance. We keep coming back! Some had sushi, some teriaki, some donburi. All equally yummy.
