Listen, this is not gourmet dining, in any way, shape or form. This is most definitely a quantity over quality establishment. Once you realize that, and set your expectations it isnt terrible. If you are a food snob, go elsewhere. It is almost like time traveling back to the 60s or 70s with the way that the waitresses dress. Showing skin is forbidden if you are a female and you work here, really weird. Regardless, the service was pretty good for a buffet. Quick to be seated, quick to be greeted, and quick with the refills and the check. The food was decent, think of it as American comfort food. Fried chicken was fresh, crispy and tasty. The roast beef was pretty good, but the carved ham was just a basic, pre-formed ham roast. Mashed potatoes tasted like they were made from scratch, and the candied yams were great. They had corn fritters that could have been a dessert on their own, really tasty! The dessert selection of pies is incredible though, thats worth a star all on its own. One thing that really annoyed me is that only 1/4 of the items on the buffet were labeled and they were ALL things which you knew what they were. I dont want to have to guess what I am putting on my plate...

Theyve really gone downhill in the last 10 years. Its dirtier than it used to be, some of the staff are people I wouldnt really want around my food and the place is just rough. The food is NOT worth the price you pay for it now. The food hasnt changed on the buffet in 20 years and yet the prices are now absurdly high...and the food is just okay. My family used to eat there quite often when I was a kid and we all agreed to meet there on a Sunday for lunch for "old times" and we all agreed wed never go back because of the prices now. The chicken gravy is the best thing they serve...I suggest putting it on everything. There are better and cheaper places to eat in the Thurmont area...Mt. Gate just isnt what it used to be which is sad, because until our last visit I remembered it fondly.

Amazing food but the staff is terrible!!! We had reservations and it was very busy, I get that, but never should patrons with reservations, have to sit for almost 2 hours with no apologies or ever nothing being said to, be treated rudely. After all that time we saw other parties smaller and larger go ahead of us that came afterwards. Finally we diced we were going to ask what was the deal, she said that she would call us when it was our turn. Again no apologies and we stated our case and she said they were waiting for tables to clear out then we would be seated. That is undèstated, the real version was horrendous. So we left! We have been a patron of this establishment for over 40 years but I will tell you we wil NEVER go back after that! I will miss the home cooked holiday meals!

The Mountain Gate Family Restaurant, located in Thurmont, MD, offers a buffet-equivalent of dinner at your grandmas house. Salisbury Steak, Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Mac n Cheese, Green Beans, and Apple Fritters are some of the items commonly found on the menu. A surprisingly diverse salad bar accompanies the hot foods along with a side-car taco bar. Homemade breads and fresh dinner rolls serve as plate mops. There are at least a dozen different pies along with cakes, bread and rice puddings, and ice cream. Come hungry and leave with a warm belly. This place is nothing to rave about but it aint bad. Prices are slightly on the high-side but not outrageous. I rate Mountain Gate Family Restaurant a salty 3 scoops of chicken gravy out of 5.

Imagine the cafeteria of a cut rate nursing home. Now imagine that, for $11.99, you can eat all you want of whatever is on the menu. Thats this place. Crumbs and dirt covered the lumpy, threadbare carpet. The food itself tasted like canned, over cooked, mush. The fried chicken wasnt bad, but they only put out thighs and wings the entire time I was there. I felt like the service was slow, but the staff is mostly nearly dead or not all there so I guess that comes with the territory. Ill also mention three or four letters of their sign were broken out and a heavy wood lighting fixture in the dining room was held to the ceiling with zip ties. I wont eat there again.

Went in this morning at 9:30am. Front desk staff were awkward and seemed inconvenienced that we were there. Waitress was pleasant! Food on buffet was cold and not alot. Long line at buffet...which wasnt a problem being that it was Sunday morning. However, the staff made the decision to switch to lunch while we were in line. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS!!! Food was cold, biscuit were hard...bacon gross, sausage rare. Yuck! Kept complaints to ourselves...when we went to pay said to the cashier "how are you?", and she rudely looked at me a didnt speak! Would rather eat a Big Bite from 7/11 or my dogs food then go there again!

Nice atmosphere and good food. Normally very pleased however today alot of food was cold or lukewarm. BBQ chicken was obviously made with leftover fried chicken as it had chunks of breading left on it. It was still cold in spots. There were 3 "italian" choices. Lasagna, spaghetti, and an elbow macaroni tomato beef pasta dish. Out of approximately half a dozen entree items to have 3 nearly identical choices was disappointing. Lastly there were hot apple slices right next to fried apple sticks. Again another overlap. Just rather lackluster for what weve come to expect. Soups and desserts were yummy as always.

Ive been eating at the Mountain Gate for about 20 years now. This time will be my last. The place smells like a nursing home. The buffet has VERY few options. The food quality has been steadily declining. What used to be "grandmas cooking" has turned into bland mush reminiscent of what theyre now force feeding grandma at her cut-rate nursing home. The one star is for the selection of desserts, although most were plated, covered in Saran wrap, and placed atop the buffet for god-only-knows how long... Yikes!!!

Certainly theis best buffet in the area by far. The food is pretty good, though some of it is a bit lacklustre. They have a huge pie/cake/dessert selection and the fried chicken is pretty good too. Fresh salad bar and a nifty gift/general store section. Extremely friendly wait staff and employees. The only knock is that some of the food comes off over cooked or bland, as many of the other buffet chains. Some of it clearly is not, however, and this is why they stand out. Great pricing too.

Horrible food. I also agree it is reminiscent of the food my Father was served in the nursing home. Bland, absolutely no flavor, too many fillings in the meat. Fried chicken over done and dry. Pies were nothing but canned filling on a prefrozen crust. Vegetables were canned as was the pudding. Mashed potatoes were instant I believe. I had better food served in the chow hall on ship back in the 60s. Staff was rude and curt. NEVER going back. We just moved here. A lesson learned for us.
