Customer service is everything.... It isnt ever just about the food but the whole experience. When attending the Classics for a large birthday party everything was going well until my card was approved for the wrong amount which was over $400. Instead of the restaurant informing me of this transaction and immediately voiding it and then charging the correct amount they chose to not say anything and then just wait for the pending charge to clear. I found out by checking my account the next night. The challenge with this is that we all know once approved the money immediately comes out so this started a ripple affect in my account causing there to be insufficient funds. No worries right, because problems happen but how you handle them determines your character. I contacted the manager and he is handling the situation very poorly. Not only did he not admit to correcting the problem in the right way he basically told me that it is your banks issue for taking the approved money and because it is pending you have to just wait it out. I will give him credit in that he did admit the waiter made a mistake. However, we are now on day three of my account being in the negative and me having to just wait it out for an issue caused by his waiter. The transaction that was approved should have been immediately voided out and we would not be in this predicament. The manager who we fussing with me and arguing with me has not yet to offer a reasonable solution or make up for this dilemma, yet I am expected to remain calm and not have access to my account because it is still in the negative. Yet he was sure to emphasize that they proudly authorized the charge of $110 only. I wonder do you even deserve that now? This was my review before the dilemma below. I do believe it is fair to present the whole picture. The Classics in Silver Spring MD took good care of us last night for a milestone birthday celebration. They have a private room that accommodates large parties and perfect for special occasions. The food is ok. However the crab royale was enjoyable and seemed to be more of a highlight than their signature steaks. In the end, everyone was satisfied with smiles. It isnt my favorite steakhouse in the are but it is a good consideration for when hosting a large group of people. Families are CLEARLY NOT WELCOMED at Rays. As avid Rays fans and diners, we were thrilled to spend another birthday celebrating with the family at the restaurant. We had six adults and three children (ages 8, 3 and 16 months with us). We have eaten there before with our children and never had a problem. They have highchairs (a sign that they welcome children) and said nothing when I noted in our reservation (for 5:30 on a Sunday night) that we would need one. The entire meal was fantastic. Great food, a nearly-empty restaurant, and a fantastic waiter. Our children are used to dining out and were very well-behaved. But things changed after an hour and a half while we were waiting for dessert. My father took my daughters to walk down the back hallway, into the bar and back around to our table. My 16-month-old was the only one making noise -- cheerful squeals as she toddled around. Almost immediately the GM, named Elliot, came out from the kitchen and rudely told my dad that the girls were not allowed to "run around" the restaurant. There was no running. There was no goofing around. There was nothing but a happy toddler. My father asked what the problem was and the GM indicated that he had patrons in his restaurant who were trying to dine. We asked if anyone had complained and no one had. In fact, most of the diners looked shocked that we were being treated so terribly, especially over a sweet-natured baby. Even the waiter was apologetic. Finally, we packed up our uneaten dessert and left. We are so sad that this happened, especially since we have always loved Rays. But even more so because we had to explain to our children, who tried so hard to behave, that they did NOTHING WRONG and that the man should not have berated us. We will never eat there again, with or without our children. It was clear that even though we spent well over $300 on our celebratory meal, we were not welcome.

We ate in the lounge--a more casual area in the bar. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. My husband had a really fantastic NY strip steak, and I had crab bisque and scallops. Everything was top notch, but very traditional. No food surprises or exotic flavors here--not a judgment either way, just explaining the kind of food to expect. The crab bisque was filled with huge lumps of tender, sweet crab meat. The scallops were perfectly done and perfectly fresh. I also liked the creamed spinach and mashed potatoes that came as sides, but the amount of butter and cream in the meal ended up being a bit overwhelming. Some lighter sides would help freshen things up and balance the meal better. We also enjoyed the rosemary bread and spiced cashews served alongside the meal. We were both really pleased with our wines by the glass, too. Its not an extensive list, but it is clearly carefully chosen. I had a well-balanced sauvignon blanc, and my husband had an interesting, but not excessively assertive shiraz. Dessert, which I cant believe my husband could squeeze in, was a very nice key lime pie--including the mellow yellow color real key lime actually is, without the disgusting vivid green this Florida girl seems to encounter everywhere she tries to get her old favorite! For 2 glasses of wine, 2 entrees, one appetizer, and one dessert, we paid around $70, which we found very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Well be back, Ray!

Summary: RUDE MatreD, mediocre service. Good steaks at a high price. We had reservations for 12 at 6:00 with a hard stop for 8:00 (most of us were attending the concert where one of us was performing...) Thanks to multiple accidents on the Beltway, we straggled in between 6:10 and 6:30. The MatreD refused to seat us until everyone was there, so we ended up milling around (even though the table was all set up and ready for us.) When the last person straggled in, the MatreD told us he wouldnt guarantee we would be done in time. We ordered in a hurry, and the performer (easy to pick out in his tux :-) asked that his meal be delivered as soon as possible. Despite that request, everything came out at the same time. He ate and bolted, and the rest of us followed soon afterwards. To his credit, the chef did come out and check that we got our meals on time; the rest of the staff couldnt care lesss. The steaks were good, but frankly not $30 good. The sauce on the salmon was way too salty. The salads were very small for the price, and the family-style sides were good, but again not particularly generous. At 7:00 on a Saturday, they were out of the special and several desserts. That shows bad planning. This was not a $50/person experience.

I should have written this review last year when we had the most terrible experience ever in my life. I brought my best friend and his wife, visiting from London to eat at Rays. My friends did not have a passport and when the waitress said (very nicely) that she could not serve them wine, we were sad, but not upset. It is completely understandable. A few minutes later, the Manager came by and said that he wont tolerate anyone harassing his waitress. We had already ordered our steaks. I told the manager politely to calm down and that this must be a misunderstanding because I saw that my friends were just disappointed, but not angry towards anyone. They understood the law. The manager was obviously trying to protect "one of his ladies" and show off his power. He was a slime bag. Hes a tool. This is the first review Ive ever written for a restaurant if that tells you how terrible that was. Im sure the steaks would have been good too. I swear Ill never go back and Ill discourage anyone to eat here as long as the heavy set manager is in charge there. Hes a real jerk.
