Today I made my daily visit to Bard Coffee in Portland. I really love that place I was introduced to it just this summer. My office is in Portland and in most cases I visit it twice a day. I love their iced Vietnamese!!! A couple salty experiences have me wondering if I should continue to support them. In the grand scheme of things I will continue to support them. Its not fair for a single employee to reflect the entire business... although others would disagree. My First Salty Experience- (Bard) " How can I help you today sir? (ME) Hello, Id like a large iced Vietnamese coffee please. (Bard) A large is going to be XXX extra is that ok? (Me) yes thats fine... I pay sit and read half of a newspaper article- (Bard) "large Vietnamese" (Me) "oh oopps I ordered an Iced coffee not a hot coffee. (female Bard Employee) Um you didnt say iced. (Me) Sorry you must have misunderstood me. i dont drink hot coffee Im sure I ordered an Iced" (Bard) "Ok" as I walk away she remarks to fellow coworker. "He didnt say Iced" just loud enough for me hear her. she finished making coffee and called my order I grabbed my coffee and it was delicious as usual. I was a little put off by the fact that the person taking the order didnt seem to have very good listening skill.. and on top of that she argued with me about what I ordered. Ouch not how you treat a customer. Todays Salty Experience- (fast forward four months and $543.00 spent on vitnamese coffees) Again I went to bard for my afternoon ICED Vietnamese coffee. Ive been collecting a large amount of change due to my Coffee habit.. I empty my pockets in a empty coffee cup that sits on my desk. So today I reached in and grabbed oh $4.00 or so. maybe a total of 10 pennies. I ordered my coffee from the same girl that handled my first salty experience. pre warned her that I was going to give her some change.. and that she could keep the remaining. ( roughly a dollar extra) WOW here is what I got.. "really change?" "really change?" "really change?" "really change?" "really change?" (Me) kind of chuckles to the rest of the patrons who are visually set back at this employees actions- " well you try to make me feel worse about it" First time Ive EVER written a bad review on a business. Get a clue about customer service.

Service could be better and drinks taste is inconsistent. For example; if you sit at the bar be aware Bard staff will still expect you to order your drink at the register and pick it up at the espresso machine even if they are not busy. I asked once when there was no one at the register and I was seated at the bar, and was told orders are taken at the register. I can understand this behavior if their were busy, but to not even be willing to deliver a drink when there are 3 people behind the counter and only a few customers indicate a problem. I get better service at Coffee by Design even if I sit at a table. While the drink quality is very good the taste is not always consistent. I have the Mocha latté 5 times to date, 3 times it was perfect, one it was very weak, and last time burnt. With Bard’s high prices compared to other coffee house I expect better service and more consistent drink flavor.

I was in here last April, around the time they opened, and I really liked the place. Excellent tea & coffee selection, tranquil atmosphere, and an overall sophisticated feel. I didnt think it could get any better, but I recently returned and loved everything about it. They painted the walls and had some really neat artwork up. My friends and I got a french press to split and the coffee was amazing (Honduras Dark Macala, try it!), not to mention the service was exceptional! I came in on Friday and then again on Saturday and the barista remembered our exact order! I will definitely be returning to Bard whenever I am in the Portland area!

Im pretty sure most of these comments were written by employees or friends of employees at this establishment. The coffee is NOT outstanding, it is rather bland, and watered down. The staff, baristas, servers or whatever you want to call them are for the most part rude, snobby, and have poor customer service! Give or take a few that were actually helpful and kind when I went in there "the last time". It seems like another average, trendy, coffee house in Portland. A place where scenesters can sit with their trendy cliques with their laptops and talk about local bands and crappy art. Ill take CBD anyday!!

The coffee at Bard was honestly as good if not better than my favorite shops in Seattle or Brooklyn. The space is large and nice and bright and has plenty of seating. The staff is super friendly and pretty quick. The nitro cold brew is smooth, creamy, and delightful. Its definitely an iced coffee you sip and enjoy rather than suck down. Its a great place to either sit and enjoy or close enough to downtown and the water to head down to the water for a nice view and relax. And they even have a couple of outdoor tables for nice days and enjoying your drink with your dog.

The staff here seemed friendly and if the giant line is any indicator its popular, but I didnt like my coffee (it was burned). Plus, frankly $4.70 is way too much for an iced latte. If youre going to charge that much then please offer a smaller size instead of only one size. It was more latte than I want to drink in one go anyway. I love coffee, I pay happily for great coffee. But I was disappointed and the atmosphere didnt seem like somewhere to stay, just somewhere to pass through. With other choices for coffee nearby I wouldnt go back again.

I have only been to Bard twice and both times the barrister has failed to give me my change back. Both times I got a medium sized house blend for $2.40. Both times I gave the guy $2.50. Both times the dude just walks off after taking my money. I like to tip but I prefer to be the one to decide when and how much to tip. Ten cents might not seem like much but over the course of a day it all adds up. As for the actual coffee it wasnt bad. Expensive, yes. I will not go again as there are many great places in Portland to get coffee.

Best coffee Ive ever had (in Portland)! I have so many good memories about this place, people Ive met there and the time I spent with my father there, after our very first road trip to Maine... I love the bucolic atmosphere, the always friendly staff (which might not be the same, since my last time there was in 2004!) and the delicious coffee (first time I ever had a cold brew - and Im from Brazil!)... Walking through Old Port and not stopping there for a coffee feels like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope! ;)

I have had an espresso from every single coffee shop I have ever been in. I have had outstanding coffee and utterly horrifying coffee from more coffee shops than I can possibly remember. I must admit, I adore single origin espresso, so call me biased, but... Simply put, I cannot remember ever having a better spro than one I was served at Bard Coffee. Ever. Out. Stand. Ing.
