We really enjoyed the atmosphere of Ceviche Bar. We used to frequent New World Cafe, which was previously in the same space and we loved how the current owners used the space and added ambiance with the beautiful bar, Cuban-inspired art and soft salsa music in the background. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly during our dinner. Our main disappointment was in the lack of vegetarian options on the menu. I understand that a lot of popular Cuban dishes revolve around meat, particularly beef, but I know from experience in visiting other Cuban restaurants in the Midwest that there are numerous tasty Cuban vegetarian dishes. My husband and I do eat seafood and so we ordered the two seafood items on the menu, but since we have tried them both now, there isnt much incentive for us to return there in the future, except for perhaps drinks at the bar. Overall, there is a lot of potential here, but it would help to expand the entree options to meet more peoples needs.

Know what youre getting into. This is not authentic Cuban food. This is Cuban food filtered for a Des Moines audience. The bread is not Cuban bread; at least, not the bread used for the pan con bistec. Small steak (the whole thing was almost the size of my hand), spinach instead of lettuce, no papitas (small, crunchy potatoes), and some peppers in it. All of these things are wrong. And nobody eats a sandwich with a side of rice and beans. It was okay tasting at best, though generally bland. Definitely did not taste the way it should. So even if I could forgive calling it a Cuban pan con bistec, it didnt even taste very good. The size of the sandwich almost justified serving it with a side of rice and beans because there is no way anyone is going to be filled from just the sandwich alone. If you go here and enjoy it, thats fine. You may, but dont be fooled into thinking Cuban food tastes anything like what youd be served at Ceviche Bar.

I love this spot even after only one time. The hostess/ owner Tanya was gracious, knowledgeable and helpful. Our server, Jasmin was newly hired, yet disposed her work like a seasoned professional. But the FOOD! I had the pork chops... PERFECTLY marinated and seasoned and expertly cooked. Rice and beans at first tasted underseasoned but paired with the succulent chops evinced what is called "the perfect bite". My friend had the ceviche, the signature dish. When I tasted it, I wanted more cilantro, but hey folks, this is Cuba not Mexico and so I delighted in the ceviches subtlety. Our guest, an Anglo, had the Cuban sandwich. When I tasted it, I felt transported back to NYC. Everything in that sandwich was as it should be. Autentico! I freakin love love LOVE the place and everything about it. Happy first anniversary! I hope to celebrate many more with you! Gracias.

It was pleasant to say the least, however, the blacksheep bar down below is employed by a bunch of tantrum throwing schmuck millennials, that find it OK to lash out at customers for not getting the tip they think they deserve, well reality check for my friend Cole NB, dude get a life and a change in career if youre gonna cry like a young girl when you dont get tipped what you want or at all sweetheart, seriously Tanya the owner of this so called establishment should reevaluate these children she hires, I gave her a call the next day to let her know exactly how Cole treated me and she did not seem sincere enough to the point where I feel hell get a stern talk and everything will be OK. Not planning to waste any more time or money here again, very unacceptable rude behavior.

Buenísimo, placed reservations with Tanya and she had everything prepared at our couples night table. I ordered in flowers for the ladies with us, and the flowers were placed at our table before we got there, which we appreciated since we wanted to surprise them. The drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert all satisfied as well as our lively attendant did. We were well served and entertained for the night that were stayed till closing. The coziness of the atmosphere and smooth Latin music as well as the genuine appreciation of the staff made us place Ceviche bar at the top of the list for getting together night with our friends. Thank you Tanya for your ability to make us returning patrons. I very much recommend others to experience the same for themselves here.

We were very disappointed with the food we were served. The cuban and steak sandwiches were very meh and rather bland. We got the rice and beans and the side salad, both of which lacked anything special. The bar options are limited, and even the mojitos lacked flavor. The waitress was lovely and helpful, and the ambiance was cool. The food simply failed to do anything but fill our stomachs. I do understand the cook was new the night we went.

Excellent bar and food! Never experienced Cuban food before but this place certainly makes me believe its fabulous if all Cuban food is prepared this way! I love the interior with the bold colors & Cuban art. The tiny outdoor patio is great for Summer nights & the service was excellent! A VERY welcome edition to the East Side :)

The good: Ceviche was great Atmosphere was really nice Staff was very friendly and took the time to tell us about the menu, passionately My mojito was 4/5 on its own. I cant wait to go back and try more on the menu. Small disclaimer this was my first ceviche but it was not for my friend who also was very pleased with the dish.

I absolutely love this place. This is the best ceviche Ive had, and Ive had a lot of ceviche from all over the world. The atmosphere is fantastic... I really feel like Im in Cuba. The cocktails are original and delicious. This is one if my all time favorite places in Des Moines. (The tequila speakeasy is so fun!)

I was kind of disappointed after hearing so many great things about this place. Our server recommended the shrimp cocktail over the ceviche so we tried it. The bread was good but the rest was just ho-hum. The menu said there would be cilantro but there was none. I would maybe try again at lunch.

Trying so hard. I love the dedication, great staff, and the food is very well done. But the portions are very small and the place is so obviously under funded that it really hurts the experience. Id love to see them move to the next level but as of now it just too obviously looks like a struggle.

There Friday evening, Nov 13. WOW! Wait staff was superior; the owner checked in with all tables - very personable and caring. Food was ALL great, especially the Cuban sandwich. Loved the atmosphere; tables were full, good stream of customers. Were going back this weekend!

The server we had was good but the food was inconsistent and left you desiring more flavor when compared to authentic cuban food. We had the ceviche which was decent, the spicy shrimp which was inconsistent, and the pollo which was lacking in flavor and accompanying ingredients.

Service was great, good atmosphere, friendly staff, but the food, particularly the ceviche, tasted like pure lime, very sour no other flavor! Same with the ceviche coctail! The Cuban was good and as well as the rice and beans, but the thing the name promotes. Disappointed. ..
