I am a concierge at a 4 star hotel downtown. It is my job to get to know restaurants in the area so that I can recommend them to my guests. I tried Vermilion after realizing fusion options in the River North area are kind of scarce, so that I could have a possible option for my guests who are interested in something different. While the menu at Vermilion is certainly out of the ordinary, I will never be sending any of my guests to this restaurant. Service was very much lacking. My waitress knew the menu very well but she wasnt friendly or inviting and she was not very attentive either. The food was okay at best. I had their signature lobster portuguese & chimichurri new york strip surf and turf. The lobster was disgusting. It was very dry and tasted like it may have been frozen at some point. The steak was flavorful, but very tough and chewy. I have to say I did enjoy the mixed flavors of everything but the texture and lack of quality meat was very disappointing. One thing I will say is that they had some very good cocktails. The drinks were the best part about the meal. I know this next part isnt very helpful for anyone who isnt a concierge, but typically when a concierge is visiting a restaurant for the first time, it is customary for the restaurant to offer a discount or sometimes comp the entire meal. Neither of these options were offered even after I presented my business card. I understand that restaurants cannot always accommodate this but SOME kind of effort to make a good impression may have persuaded me to send them some business. Unfortunately this was not the case and I will never send a guest to this restaurant, because I fear that they may have a similar experience to mine, and I would look like I dont know what Im talking about. Sorry, Vermillion. I had high hopes and was rooting for you, but in the end I was severely let down.

We were a party of ten with a reservation at Vermilion on a DEAD Monday evening (2/24/2014). We all enjoyed the food and service. It was very good. However, the sad part about this evening is that it ended with an issue with the valet parking. This valet was recommended by the restaurant at $12.00. When we arrived, we were informed that it was $14.00 with a curfew of 3 hours. Annoying, but okay. We were 2 minutes over our valet time restrictions and were told it would be $20.00. Very annoying, especially since we spent over 2 minutes waiting for our car. We had just spent close to $1,000.00 to eat at Vermilion and now we were being gouged for having used the valet they recommended. We could afford to pay the valet, but we had a principle to stand up for (not everyone is a sucker). Telling our waitress about this swindle got us an apology - let’s hope it gets attention on a higher level than “I’m sorry” so that other patrons aren’t duped into overpaying an absurd valet service. We told the waitress we would never be back and we won’t. The valet experience negated the whole good food experience. Too bad for them, since we could have brought them several more visits of ten or more people in the future.

I came here with high expectations of a truly unique experience with the fusion of two of my favorite ethnic foods- Indian and Latin. It was underwhelming at best. On a Lollapalooza Saturday (potentially one of the busiest weekends for restaurants in Chicago) the restaurant had a many tables open which I thought was really odd. It took a while for us to get served, which made sense as there really was only two employees there! One waitress made our drinks and served everything while another employee was the chef and also helped serve food items. The restaurant was also silent... the only music or audio throughout was that of the conversations of the other dinner guests or the bass of rockit next door. All in all a very weird experience. The staff were courteous, but overall the food was just so so. The pani poori drink was cool in conception but after a few sips I couldnt finish it as the flavor profile was just too strong. I wouldnt come here again, unless chef/ownership changes.

Flew into Chicago with my family for the weekend. Trump Tower Hotel concierge recommended Vermillion - what a mistake. The primary issue is their lousy service...hard to tell if theyre poorly managed or just dont care. We waited over an hour for our order....after multiple promises that it would be out in a few minutes, finally demanded to see the manager. After more promises and another 10 minutes food finally arrived, it was mostly cold. Flavor was ok, but generally overbearing. No nuance or subtlety in the flavoring....just tons of spices. Also, aside from the random fried planteen, it was hard to tell why this would be categorized as fusion. Shockingly, after all of this....we waited another 10 minutes to get the check. They were so tone deaf that their solution was to offer a free desert....this after my wife and kids already started back to the hotel. Worst experience Ive had at a restaurant in years - so much so that I felt compelled to leave this review.

DO NOT EVER GO HERE!! Our group ordered 5 appetizers between 9 of us. They brought and charged us for several orders of each appetizer. We asked for separate checks before the meal, but were brought a singular check 3 hours after the meal began (the food took ages to arrive). When they split the checks, they swiped the wrong cards with the wrong bills. Finally, they fraudulently added $5-30 to each check. I was in town for a competition. The concierge recommended this place. The group was very excited to try this place- Indian-Latin Fusion?! Sounded amazing. There was interesting food, but I would not say it was worth the price by a long shot. We are all now dealing with the FRAUDULENT CHARGES!

I say its okay. Service can certainly take away from an experience. We received good service when we received it. But our waiter disappeared several times tonight. "He must be the hardest working man in the rest bus!" LOL Attended restaurant week 2017 had the Empanada to start (not on the regular menu), the Blackened Tamarind Ribs as my entree, and the Star Anise Tres Leches Jar as the dessert. Interesting concept, "fusion" a combination of Indian and Latin flavors. Who knew they would complement each other so well! If your up for an adventure and $18 cocktails (Bollywood Item Number-YUMMM!!), this is the spot. Great place for date night BTW. Kind of a grown and sexy decor!

The food is fabulous. The flavour combinations are unusual and complex. Most dishes are spicy, so if you dont like spice, this is not the place for you. The decor is modern and elegant, but the tables are too close together making the restaurant pretty noisy. Unless you go very early or very late, its not suitable for an intimate, romantic dinner. Waiters are courteous and knowledgeable, though the kitchen can be slow. For the quality of the food and service, the prices are reasonable -- $60 gets you an appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink, including tax and tip. For a lighter meal, you can share two appetizers and an entree for about $30 a person. Highly recommended.
