OK. First off, its not a deli. Not at all. Seems everyone who serves a sandwich seems to pick up this "deli" label like its a given, but it is Not A Given. Clue: No meat/cheese case? Not a deli. No chopped liver? Not a deli. So.... NOT A DELI. Now that the "deli" thing is settled, Purple Onion IS a great lunch place. Excellent Cubans. Best downtown. Better than Pipos. More stuffed than Silver Ring. Chop Shop used to have this crown in my book, but since they slashed the meat portion Im back to the Onion for Best Cuban Downtown. Love the chicken parm sandwich. Chicken strips are really good, properly fried and ungreasy. French fries are always tasty and not an afterthought as they seem to be in so many places. Ive never had anything there I didnt like. Portions are generous and prices are reasonable. Service is fast and friendly; ownership is onsite and active in both front and back of the house. The fast-moving blonde woman is an owner. She cares and it shows. The place is a bit noisy. Chalk it up to poor acoustics. 12-1 is loud and crowded. After the rush, things quiet down considerably. You should try it.

Wonderful lunch spot! The mozzarella sticks were cooked perfectly hot and stringy. The pastrami and Swiss was on point. I love that they offer it as a half sandwich not to weigh me down. I paired it with the summer salad that went perfectly with the strawberry kiwi water they offer instead of just soda. The owner Sammy waited on us personally and her customer service was friendly and upbeat. Only open for lunch and rightfully so. Definitely a hidden jem in our wonderful town.

This is one of my favorite eateries downtown. They have a great variety of different lunch options. They have the absolute best soups! Sammy and Lenny always make sure everyone has the best experience. They care about every single customer and it shows by the crowd that appears at 11:30. Definitely a place to visit if youre only in town for a quick visit. If youre a Lakelander, theres no excuse! Everyone needs to try the Purple Onion. I guarantee youll be back!

BEST tater tots Ive ever had in my life. Not mushy or too greasy, theyre perfectly crisp! Everything Ive ever tried there has been amazing. The Cudan, The turkey bacon swiss melt, the cheeseburgers, the cheddar broccoli soup, the chicken and dumplings, the brownies and the sweat tea. All amazing. Definitely recommend.

Great food at good prices. The menu offers different selections than other local restaurants. Summer Salad, Balsamic Chicken, Cuban (and salad version), and burgers are favorites. Sweet Potato fries always top off the meal.

Great lunch time spot in Lakeland. Terrific sandwich and soup options. The Balsamic chicken sandwich is pretty amazing. Servers are always friendly. They get very busy at lunch time so be prepared for a crowd.

Please update your hours in Web sites. Drove an hour to eat to find out youre closed on Sundays. And I called the day before to verify but no one answered after numerous attempts.
