we stopped by for a quick lunch. The atmosphere is very simple, yet clean. It really does remind you a bit of the old country and the owner is sure to have some russian tv or music video running in the background. This is a family run business, so if you want something special or dont know what to order, just ask. Everything is freshly made. I read below that the beat soup was not authentic, but it was better than any id tasted before. Maybe the other guy was used to having dirt in his beets. Everything we tried was delicious and presented very professionally. Prices are also reasonable. Since its cooked to order, dont expect a 15min. lunch. Rice takes 20 min. to cook. The restaurant is hidden in the back courtyard, behind the deli. Plenty of parking if you drive around the back of the small lot in front. try it for a cultural experience. In case you dont know, Babushka, means grandmother in russian.

I would not recommend shopping at the deli or eating at the cafe since everything seems to be overpriced relative to other stores by at least 20%. If you do decide to go there, make sure that the owner, who also operates the cash register, does not charge you a random price (such as $16 for a small bag of vareniki with cherries that he charged me recently). Prices are not written down anywhere, and the owner charges any amount he thinks he can get away with. If you can avoid it, better shop elsewhere, and if you absolutely have to shop at Babushka, please make sure to ask for the price beforehand and check it again on the receipt. I am not sure who wrote the positive reviews, probably the owners themselves.

i noticed many sausages with expired dates, but ignored and purchased 6 inch Hungarian Salami and Georgian style sausage, total $26. Normally i would have them sliced, but this time i was not even offered slicing. Went home to find out the salami had grey color on the inside, and the georgian sausage hade sticky liquid in the package. The date they were made was 6 months ago! When i return them to the store, the deli gauy started: arguing "thats how is supposed to be". be very carefull, check the dates, and have them slice the salami for you so you can see the inside.

As newcomers to Walnut Creek. and very much into the ethnic dining experiences offered here, we enjoyed Babushka this evening. We liked the relatively unfamiliar cuisine. The service and attention from the management in this family restaurant were quite exceptional. Ive always believed that a local cuisine and local wines are meant for each other. That said, Russian and Romanian red wines are a little sweet for our taste, but you can take your own for a very modest corkage fee. Well be back to Babushka.

My husband and I have been coming to Babushka for several years. When my Russian father was not able to cook anymore, we relied on Babushka to have all the food we needed for our holiday feasts and we were never disappointed. Now that my father has passed, we still celebrate him by picking up some food at Babushka, taking it home, gathering the family and reminiscing. Thank you Babushka!

Incredible flavor! Each dish has very different flavors, spices, textures. I have gone several times and due to my mother–in–law`s superb Hungarian cooking I can attestto the authenticity of the menus, ingredients and cooking styles. I have many Russian/ Ukrainian/Khazak/ and Turkish friends. This is GREAT peasant food.

So we got roped in by the father, we were taking a picture out front and he came out and coaxed us in. It is quite worth the cultural experience, we however were out of step with the decor and patronage. Most of the clientele were dressed well and coifed.......we were not.

Small market with a larger dining area in the back. While theres not a huge selection, the market has plenty of good baked items, sweets, imported candies, cakes, pre-made Russian salads and other deli items. There is also a freezer with bags of pelmeni. Good stuff!

Fantastic service and products from the deli. The owner helped me find exactly what I needed. The fresh sausage was amazing. Great selection of ethnic foods for those wanting to prepare Russian, Dalmatian and other Eastern European cuisine.

Trying Russian food for the first time here was a great experience. My favorite was the chicken. It was probably the best chicken Ive ever had. The service was excellent as all of the staff were very friendly. They deserve a 10/10.

Yes, do not expect a quick meal here but to me thats part of the experience. The food here is really excellent and I like their selection of Eastern European wines. All in all, we love coming here.

If not a very tiny size, Id give it 5 stars. Has good amount of russian grocery that one may need. Friendly stuff. Cooked dishes like sauerkraut or pickles are way overpriced though.

Easy to rate this place five stars. They made great decisions and suggestions a out both wine and food. The only problem was that the food was so good I didnt want to stop eating.

Love that place.if you are looking for some European products: sausage pastry, cheese and smoked fish..etc there is also a nice restaurant upfront worth a try.

This place has fantastic food. The smoked fish is to die for. The wine selection could be better, which is why it is not five stars, but wow is the food good.

The dining area is good but the shop is small. We usually go there to buy some specific Russian/international products you cant find in other places nearby
