Say nine
So I finally got to eat at handline at my wifes insistence that I try again. My first encounter was trying to eat there during their posted hours only to find they were closed, and then be treated rudely on the phone when I called about it. I wish I hadnt. You stand in line to order like you are at Mc Fast Food. You order from a person who looks like you are boring them. And taking up your time. Of course you are paying first because its a "take on burger joints" so you are tipping right then, in front of the staff, even before they have prepared your food. Let that sink in. One burger, one fry, a fish taco plate, and two pints of beer. $47 Then you find yourself a table and sit down on a bench with your number. You food does not come together as is the practice of decent restaurants everywhere. But they make sure to prime you of this on the menu. Heres a hint, this is a kitchen that does not know how to que tickets. The fries come first. A tiny order, about the uquivilant of one medium potato. They are pale and lackluster, served on a kitchy camp plate. There is a thimble of watery bland thousand island. The fries are cut across the short direction of the potato so the longest is two inches. One inch is the average. I inquire about the oil because of their odd taste. Im told they are fried in rice bran oil. Note to self, never cook in rice bran oil, it tastes mildly rancid. The burger is small and bland on an overly soft brioche bun (I hope this trend dies a sudden death soon). The fish tacos are passable but unremarkable. Everything is served on the camp plates with no other effort given to presentation. Our beers were good. I consider myself a foodie, and a passable cook in my own right. I know food. I love food. I also enjoy a bit of pretense and innovation in preparation, presentation, and atmosphere. Pretense for pretense sake with no substance to back it up is ridiculous. This is what I found at Handline. I have eaten with 3 others at Ramen Gajin in Sebastopol and eaten like a king for under $50 total. Full service, amazing food, enjoyable atmosphere. In short I find nothing to reccomend Handline.

I really really wanted this place to be a 5. We love supporting good local small businesses. We stopped for lunch on a weekend. Service was great, menu was interesting, beer and wine selection is respectable, great decor--so far so good. When our orders were served, they came out one by one, whenever they were ready. A little odd, but I guess it means the food is good and hot, or cold as the case may be. OK. The rockfish ceviche was excellent but it was spicy, spicy, spicy. I loved it but my poor husband could barely eat it, so we had to switch plates. Then came my pork tacos, which he took on. Guess what? Spicy, spicy. Not quite as bad for him, but what was worse than that, half of the pork was pure fat--the kind that you cant bite off, but rather pulls the entire taco apart. We left half the "meat" on the plate. Overall it was rather disappointing. A little warning about the jalepenos would have been appreciated. Also hubby had a little stomach queasiness by the time we got home. Maybe it was directly related, maybe coincidence, but either way were reluctant to try again.

Endroit magnifique maintenant, si vous aimez payer tres cher pour quelque chose de "normal" allez y! 12$ le burger sans frites, 11$ le verre de vin cest très cher payé. Very nice place, if you like to pay very expensive something "regular", lets go. 12$ a burger without fries, 11$ a glass of wine its very expensive payed. for this prices, all employees have caps, and hygiene in the kitchen is not better. At this price, we expect people in costumes

There becomes a point where adapting to the Sonoma County/Sebastopol vibe and uniqueness becomes impractical and excessive - and this place crossed that line. The lack of a substantial quantity of food to match their overpriced meals steals your attention from their austere decor and atmosphere that a resemblance to that of chipotle. The poor quality of service from the staff came to no surprise when they could barely answer the most basic questions of the menu. Dont waste your time with this place, overpriced meals for low quality food.

Lines that are way too long during eating hours and too long is the wait for a table. The food is too expensive, but tasty. The staff are exceptional. The parking is a nightmare and they need to resolve their issues with their neighbor (owner of MaxStraps and all the businesses in his building. No signs next to restaurant about no parking for restaurant and I paid a $415.00 tow fee. They need signs like the ones their neighbor put up after I was towed.

Pricey, small portions, food doesnt have much taste overall ~ including the sauce on every table. Love the fizzy free water & ecological design and thoughtfulness. No heat lamps @ outdoor seating. Somehow owner has the $ and smarts to attract undiscerning materialistic locals & visitors ~ its been crowded since opening day. Many who see & know what a truly good restaurant dont feel drawn to returning. Staff is super nice*

This was the perfect stop for us after a long journey. The staff was informative and knowledgeable about their menu, and our whole party walked away happy with our meal decisions. The craft beer selection is plentiful, the tacos were perfect (I loved the tacos pastor), and the soft serve ice cream was the perfect "night cap" for some weary travelers. Would highly recommend.

True California cuisine with amazing fish tacos. (Rock cod in a beer batter. Ignore the haters. Lots of ways to make fish tacos and these are wonderful.) The happy hour menu is different from the regular menu so its good to come at non-convention hours to try other things. Great drink selection. Oysters are a must. Daily specials are always awesome. We go every month.

Super fresh food that is sustainable. We know some chefs who work here and farmers that supply them. They care about the food they make and use very high quality ingredients. You will have to pay a little more and it will probably be crowded, but its worth it. Also, lots of vegetarian/vegan options, in addition to meat.

This place is so good and cool. Lots of good seafood dishes with healthy portions of protein. Nice atmosphere but it is not a traditional restaurant, more like a street cafe that just happens to have indoor seating, so dont be surprised to have to sit next to strangers if its crowded.

Handline is just simply amazing. From the very moment we walked in we were greeted like we were regulars. Except we werent. But Meredith helped us out with coursing and wine pairing. It was so good we went back less than 12 hours after our first visit

My only complaint is the current beer selection is pathetic. They all have a silly gimmick, like fruit or no hops. Its such an incredibly wonderful place thats is hard to believe that they cant manage to keep a single decent beer on tap.
