I was visiting from out of town and was looking forward to eating here because I love Indian food and locals rated this place highly. This is among the worst Indian food Ive ever eaten. I couldt finish my first and only plate, and Im one who doesnt like to waste food. I went there for lunch, which was a buffet. There were not many options. The rice was dry. The chickpea curry was okay, but needed more spice. Not heat, just more curry spices. The butter chicken tasted like they used a can of tomato bisque soup and added curry spices, but not enough. The sauce was kind of anemic; it was thin and watery when it mixed with the rice, which was unpleasant. Its bizarre that an Indian restaurants main issue seems to be not enough spice in the food. The iced tea was good, which I appreciated. It had more spice than the food. A basket of naan was brought out well into my visit, when I was almost done eating. Aside from the food, it was a little frustrating that I tried going there to eat the day before and their "open" sign was on when they were closed.

Unfortunately I dont think there are any *great* Indian restaurants in SLO (Im comparing them to restaurants in SoCal and the Bay Area, plus homemade food from my Indian friend), but we do go there occasionally to get our Indian food fix. Probably our favorite thing is the Samosa appetizer, which is super tasty with the two accompanying sauces. We recently ordered chicken tikka, one of my favorite dishes, and it was extremely dry. I cant say whether it was merely overcooked, but it actually made me wonder if it was reheated leftovers from their buffet. It reminded me of reheated leftovers at home. I love that at home, but I dont expect to feel like Im eating that in a restaurant. Lastly the service is always mediocre. Not horrible, definitely not great, slightly below average, and not particularly friendly.

All these people who are saying poor to fair dont know what they are talking about. After being at Cal Poly and dealing with on campus food going to Taj was a breath of fresh air. Coming from the Berkeley area I know good Indian food. This easily beats places like Flavors of India and Naan n Curry, and comes close to matching up with Khana Peena on College Avenue. The curries are rich, the meat is tender and juicy, the naan is perfect for dipping, and the briyani is flavorful. You can ask for mild if you arent a spice lover, and the manager does (I think, this has happened every time I have been there, which is 5 times and definitely going to increase) all of the waitering. He has given my party free strawberrys or oranges as desert every time we have been there. Great people, great food, great time.

Worst Indian food ever. We drive truck and we always google nearest Indian food possible. We found this stupid Indian restaurant and order Togo. We ordered 1 chicken tandoori, 1 Chicken Karahi naan and rice. When I went to pick up the food, I saw chicken Karahi packed in really small tray. I thought thats not enough and ordered 1 more. I paid $46. After I went to my truck and opened all boxes with my co driver. 1. Chicken tandoori is not cooked well and has only 2 pcs 2. karahi chicken taste like Chinese orange chicken. 3. Naan was worst This place is worst to go if you know little bit about Indian food. SLO is best for these stupid people to cheat customer because they dont know how indian food taste.

While the food here is fantastic, it isnt the best Indian food Ive had. What really sets this place apart is the friendly service and affordable prices. Being a college student means that every night out has to be worth it, and this place definitely delivered. The food is savory without feeling too heavy, the naan is great and always fresh, and the appetizers are well portioned and cheap enough where its hard not to have at least one. Those used to a more cosmopolitan environment might find the food a bit too basic and the tastes just a tad blunt, but in a small town like this its about the best one can hope for: solid, tasty Indian food that doesnt break the bank.

The food is exquisite. It is authentic Indian cuisine. Being an Indian myself, I despise cuisines that cater to all audiences at the expense of authenticity. But this restaurant maintains the same quality as if it were one catering to Indian people in India. The only complaint I have is of the staff which at times can be rude and dismissive. Walking away from the table theyre serving whilst the customer is speaking to them is unacceptable. A smile and politeness go a long way in customer satisfaction. Thats something they have yet to learn.

Excellent! This place is so delicious and has the best Indian food on the Central Coast or for that matter in California...You and your family will LOVE IT like we do:) It is family owned and operated and has warm and friendly ambiance. The owner is awesome! I am a local in SLO and this is a place where ALL the LOCALS GO, so if you are visiting The Happiest City In America dont miss Taj Palace. The food is incredible and the price is great for your pocket book. You wont find a better Indian restaurant anywhere...Enjoy!

My wife and I just loved the food here. We asked the food to be spicy (HOT) and it really was. (They make the spice level to your request - Mild,Medium, Hot). This was one of the best food I have had in a very long time. If this restaurant would have been close to where I live, I would go there every week. It is like 10 miles from Pismo beach where I was staying and this restaurant should be a must go for all Indian food lovers!!!!!!!!!

Weve been eating here for years. The food is delicious and always perfect. Their prices are very reasonable and portions generous. The restaurant is always immaculate and the service is always excellent. They are consistent and have been one of our favorite restaurants for over a decade. There are two very negative reviews here that simply cannot be about the Taj Palace. They have to be about someplace else.

I simply love Indian food, will sacrifice a few things and this one of those places. The food is mediocre but will pass. The buffet is lacking and small, place seems a little dirty. The waiter generally comes off as rude, angry but he does tend to you. The cars in the parking lot are what I have seen are mostly on the few side. Indian restaurants are few in SLO, its a shame this place is definitely lacking.

Yesterday we went to this place in a hot sunny day, there was no AC in here. The doors were left open to get air in but that did very little help. Only one waiter was available, had to wait for him to come to our table every time we needed something. And when checked water mugs it had some dust in it. And food choice was limited for a buffet. Taste of the food was blunt. Not going to this place again.

The owner is always there and is very friendly, so the service is always excellent. Our two favorites are Shahai Paneer and Curry Lamb, both of which are excellent! We go on average 1-2 times per week and it is consistently good. Definitely give it a try! Its ambiance is not the best, but it if youre not expecting very fancy, then it will be great!
