Great value, descent taste and quick, friendly service! They have an unusual combination in lunch specials: Udon with salmon sashimi bowl. I also added spicy miso broth to udon for $1 extra. Spicy and miso are also a surprise, but the taste was very smooth. The bowl of rice is covered with a dozen or so salmon stripes, cut smaller than your typical sashimi but still has enough meat to fill me up. The salmon tastes rich and fresh, just what I expected. At a total of under $11, that’s a steal. I also ordered a side of edamame with garlic sauce, another surprise considering most restaurants serve edamame sides plain. My entire meal costed $15 and odds, and was so fulfilling I couldn’t eat dinner. I entered the restaurant after 2pm on a Sunday. The orders came very quickly. With three waitresses and at least one waiter, I expect orders to be equally fast on weekdays - if you can get a seat. The space is really small, I think they have less than a dozen tables that barely seat four each. Decoration is light yet themed. (The Japanese name suggests ghost, so there are monsters on the wall. There is even a hint of Godzilla although I do not see it in display.) All in all, this is a great place to eat if you come to that area.

It was a cold rainy day today so my friend and I decided to visit Kitaro. I ordered the Wakame Udon soup and it was delicious. The seaweed was plentiful and the noodles were great. I was concerned about the broth as most establishments use pre made soup bases that are salty, but this one regardless of pre made or homemade broth, was seasoned nicely, not too salty. The staff were very courteous and friendly, will definitely come back again to try other items.

You d be hard pressed to find a sushi place that is this delicious and this cheap. DO NOT FORGET TO GET the firecrackers! I have turned those on to som many people that they are all addicted now. And for $3? You just cant beat it. My boyfriend and I had an excellent meal with beer * wine and left with a $25 bill. GO THERE. You will not be disappointed.

I live closeby and only go there for my sushi/sashimi/rolls needs. Depending on my mood and who is with me Ill take (to go) only a lunchbox (~$12) or a full tray (~$30) and I love everything I eat from there. Ate in the restaurant once and the service was what I expect from a restaurant in this price range.

This sushi is where me and my student friends used to go when we were craving sushi but had no money. Their food is what it is, nothing special but good for the price. Personally, I like their sister restaurant in the Sunset (Kikis) more and tends to be less crowded than Kitaro.

My friend loves this place. i think its good too, but i also think that it tastes like kikis which is just as good. Parking isnt that bad. Metered parking in front of the restaurant, and neighborhood parking around the block. Good food and Cheap prices.

This is a solid place for a good variety and amount of Japanese food at an affordable price. The sashimi quality is good and the staff are all pretty friendly. Pro tip, theres a 15% off coupon on the back of the Safeway receipt at the La Playa location.

Ive been going to Kitaro since they were in their original tiny location. The food is fresh and the service is friendly. Their prices are amazing when you consider the quality of their food. Lines are common in the evenings but its worth the wait.

The first Japanese restaurant Ive ever been to, Kitaro has been a go to for a while. However, the quality is slowly going down with rolls getting smaller. The California rolls are getting smaller and smaller and are tiny now.

Decent, cheap sushi. Their party platters are awesomely priced and always get good comments at parties. They also have good rewards like 15% off if you sign up for their email list.

5 years, 5 visits, hated it every time. waiters are disinterested in helping people and it shows. food makes me wish something else was open at the time.

Kitaro is pretty much the cheapest good sushi place I know. Its not great, its not particularly warm or inviting, but its cheap as hell and tasty.

Mediocre food quality and service. Rice is not proper sushii rice and meat and sashimi are not cut correctly therefore hard to chew.
