My girlfriend and I are from Sacramento and we stopped by the Taipei on Valentines Day while visiting the Zoo. I originally tried to get reservations for some of the more touristy restaurants in the Sunset District, but of course they had been booked for weeks. Instead, after reading some of the reviews, we decided to hit this low-key restaurant and we’re glad we did. By a stroke of good fortune the “Romantic Nook” was open and we were able to sit there. Anyhow, the customer service was excellent and the staff was very polite wishing the both of us a happy Valentines Day. I had the crispy whole fish in spicy hunan sauce and it was awesome! Served in the tradition style (deep fried whole with head and all), it was the best fish I’ve had in months. Beats anything I can find where I live. When you’re at the bay, you owe it to yourself to get some sea food aside from the traditional clam chowder in a bread bowl. Anyhow, we also had the sizzling rice soup and the fried won tons with cream cheese. Both of which were excellent as well. The only thing I didn’t care for was the seasoned crispy duck which my girlfriend ordered. It tasted musky and gamy to me, but then again, I’ve never had much of an appetite for duck. In the end, our bill came to about $55 which included soft drinks, an appetizer, soup, two entrees, and a side of rice that fed both of us. Overall, it was a very reasonable price when compared to other restaurants in the area. If we’re ever in the Sunset district again, we will definitely stop by.

Any New Yorker will tell you that West Coast Chinese food is just awful. Ive searched high and low for decent Chinese in San Francisco, but its all wilted greens, grease-drenched spring rolls, and pot stickers that are more like stale ravioli than CHinese dumplings. Thank God for Taipe Chinese Restaurant! Not only is it close to me (hardly anything else is), but the food is actually good! Crispy veggies that are still green! Plump, hearty pot stickers! Pork fried rice that actually has chunks of pork and isnt the consistancy of oatmeal! The only complaint I have is that the General Tsos Chicken has no broccolli, and that its way too salty. So what? I can order something else, as everything else is great. Their soups are especially good. This place isnt cheap, but the servings are big and the service is great. A bonus: when they deliver, the food is still hot and the containers areneatly closed: no spillage, which is a lot more than I can say about any of the other Chinese restaurants in SF Ive ordered delivery from. All in all, this place gives me faith. Not quite NYC, but the next best thing. If they start making cold noodles in sesame paste, Ill have found heaven.

We have been here twice; the first time: we were cold and hungry after going to the SF Zoo, which is nearby. We were happy the Wonton soup rewarmed us. However, we just went there again last night, and the food was terrible. We paid almost $65 for luke-warm weak tea, burnt potstickers that were cold inside, pork-fried rice that was so greasy/oil-covered, we stopped eating, and shrimp/broccoli with garlic sauce that tasted so fishy we asked to return it. When we asked if the vegetables and seafood was fresh, we were told it was fresh frozen. The pork in the rice should really be called unknown protein and was so full of cartilage and fat I spent more time spitting stuff out than chewing. While the service staff is friendly at Chef Gaos, the kitchen and whatever refrigerator or freezer they are storing their pre-cooked stuff for reheating in should be condemned. We should have known this place was a no go when 90% of the dining room was empty on a Saturday night. Locals know best... Avoid this place, despite its great location off 19th Ave. My advice to Chef Gao if they wish to stay in business: F...R...E...S...H

Not good at all. The chicken was stringy and chewy. Honey walnut prawns were overbooked. We typically enjoy the leftovers for next day lunch but this time I couldnt even finish it.
