Had a great Wednesday-night dinner here. They surprised us with a few pre-meal treats. Wont ruin it for it for you, but needless to say it was a great way to start. The fresh vegetable appetizer was very citrus-y and fresh. The beef was a little flat flavor-wise but good with the salty Parmesan. The tuna crudo was my favorite starter. Light and not at all fishy. The cuttlefish second course was my favorite dish of the evening. Fascinating noodle-like texture and intense seasoning. The gnocchi was also good... smoky. The risotto was unremarkable IMO. Salmon was (deliberately) under cooked in the middle and as result very dense and moist vs flaky. Chocolate mousse was well-textured and had the right balance of richness and lightness. Sometimes chocolate dishes can be kind of heavy for me, but this was perfect. Strong hints of vanilla too. Service was among the best Ive ever had. Compares favorably to The French Laundry. This place has been around since 1989 and looks it. The vibe is very early 90s and overall kind of flat. Music was good.

Food was great and service was fantastic. Love all the little extras they give you on top of your meal. Before we got to our first course, the kitchen sent out a few bites and a sip. Then at the end of the meal, not only was there a candy cart, they also gave us a complimentary cake for our anniversary celebration on top of the desserts we ordered. To top it all off, at the very end, they gave us a box of biscotti to take home with us. I also love the fact that they are very flexible with their menu. We both opted for 4-courses and was able to pick whatever we desired from the menu including items off the tasting menu. The only requirement was that we only pick one main course per person. All the dishes we had were cooked perfectly and tasted amazing. The only critique I have is that they did not have a palate cleanser between the last savory course and first sweet course. A granita or something refreshing in the transition would have been nice. None the less it was a superb meal. Fine dining at its best.

The experience is "best described as ethereal" say diners who "dress up" to get "pampered" at this "romantic" Italian in Polk Gulch, one of the "last SF outposts" for "white-tablecloth fine dining" where chef Suzette Gresham offers "marvelous", "inventive" tasting menus that are "expertly paired" with wines from an "amazing" list by an "oh-so-attentive" staff; the setting in a former church is "quiet enough to talk", and amenities such as "stools for ladies purses" seal the deal for a "special occasion" that celebrants "remember for months." The food was amazing and the service was just excellent, BUT it was all relatively ruined by an obnoxiously loud & vulgar group of 6 sitting right near us. Loud screaming, swearing and other informal behavior I would expect in a hotel bar not a fine eating establishment unfortunately made this special occasion a nightmare. Im sorry that the management didnt feel it was their responsibility to ask them to settle down or leave. I am not a wealthy person and spending $400 on dinner for two would have been worth it if the ambiance hadnt been so disturbing. I guess, I would say if you are planning on going here for a special occasion you had just better pray you dont have loud, rude, vulgar people sitting near you or you will be out of luck.

In my opinion this was the worst food I have ever eaten ..... if u want simple italian comfort food this is not the place to go.... they are much too complex in their dishes and an italian person would be insulted by this food... it in no way even slightly resembles italian .... I went to this restaurant with my family of five and ended up spending $375 on complete garbage ..... they did not even have normal pasta , or customary Italian meat dishes on their menu.. the service was great , but the food was GARBAGE... please DO NOT make the same mistake I did and waste your hard earned money on this AWFUL place that shouldnt even be considered a restaurant

I have very mixed opinions about Acquerello. On the one hand, the service was impecable and there were a few great touches (like a complementary glass of champagne when we said we were celebrating our anniversary). The food itself though was a bit hit or miss - some dishes were out of this world, while others were just average. However, for the price, id except everything to be excellent. Overall, I think the biggest problem is that Acquerello lacks creativity. I felt like I could have had many of the same dishes at any other restaurant in the city.

Hands down one of the best places I have ever eaten. The wine list is amazing. They have at least 3 red and whites from every region in Italy. The food is out of this world. I try to go back every time I travel to San Francisco. It is upscale and romantic. I wont give very many places a 5 star rating but Acquerello really deserves it. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable and that amazing food and wine will keep you coming back for more if you have the money to spend.

Amazing service. Crazy amazing attentive service. Need a small sidetable for your bag? Everyone in your party will be served at the same instant. A work of choreography. Very expensive. Food is good, but not memorable. Cost justified only for the theater of having a team of people larger than your party dedicated to watching your party for anything they can do to increase the dramatic presentation. But in the end, I dont remember what I ate.

I am rarely so impressed. The tasting menu was delightful. You are offered a few options for each course. Everything I tried was elegant, small and tasty. The waiters discreetly watch you so that they immediately know when you are done eating a course. When I arrived, I discovered that my two-week-ahead reservation had been setup for the wrong time. This was a little annoying. But they were able to slot me in nonetheless.

This was the most glorious journey my palate ever had in one meal. Every single dish was extraordinary. It is not describable in words. I have gone to Mitchelin star restaurants were the service and food were excellent but this is two levels above besting almost all of the restaurants Ive been in California, New York City, Paris & Tokyo. Passionate and knowledgable staff are always attentive!

As romantic as an evening in Venice, with better food! Owner Giancarlo, Chef Suzanne, and son Gianpaulo together create an incrediby special dining experience. From the time you enter the hushed but genial atmosphere, ot the time you leave, the staff treats you like royalty, and the food!!! Every bite is a delight; light succulent fare from the freshest ingredients. This IS my bucket list!

The best place I have ever been for a nice meal. (And ever is saying a lot!) The service was amazing. I eat slowly compared to my diner companions and the wait staff timed our meal perfectly. I cant believe the quality of food either. It was all exceptional! A must do for special occasions. Warning: once you go here, your bar for fining dinning will be high and very hard to beat.
