Weve been going to Hot City for several years. They have great pizza and an unmatched beer selection. We typically get one or two of the hard to find saison bottles and my husband chats about beer with the owner. Weve even been for dinner during Beer Week the past two years and never had the experience we had last night. We arrived with our two kids around 6:15 and grabbed the only available table. Another family arrived a little later and found a recently vacated table. Around 6:45, two obviously drunk tables merged and started up a very loud and profane game of charades. They were so loud, we couldnt even talk to each other, and my tiny baby was too upset by all this to even nurse. The game just got louder and more rowdy, and no one said anything to that group. We decided to take our dinner home, and as we left my husband and I both said something to the guy behind the counter (not the owner), and he didnt even bother to apologize. He just said, well, its Beer Week. I might have understood if wed been there at 9 or 10, but we were there at dinner time, with kids, and Hot City is a restaurant, not a bar. There are plenty of restaurants in the area where people have a good time while still being respectful of other patrons, and it would have taken just a few words from the staff to set the tone. Well certainly never be back, regardless of the beer selection, and well be sharing our experience with all our beer nerd friends.

As a pizza connoisseur I was VERY impressed with Garolbis Hot City Pizza. Excellent crust which was unlike any other Ive tried - I think they use a special wheat mix in the dough or something, and they also have whole wheat crust. Good selection of toppings and good sauces too. Definitely a MUST-TRY, and I dont give recommendations like that lightly. I agree with what the other reviewers here have said too. This place has won my loyalty. Garolbis is in the location that used to be Royal Pizza (which was a mediocre dive), and the third pizza place in that 57th & J st spot in the 12 years Ive lived in the neighborhood. Well, they remodeled it inside and made a nice little dining area in the front. Now it actually feels kinda hip, friendly and even has a plasma TV on the wall. A major improvement over how it used to look. The staff seemed reasonably friendly, but nothing special. NOTE: As of April 2008, the HOURS ARE M-F 2pm-9pm, Sat-Sun 4pm-9pm (not 10pm as it lists here on Google). I DO wish they were open later. I mean, a pizza place just shouldnt close before 11pm on fri/sat, and there have been many times I decided to call them up but theyve been closed. Maybe theyll figure it out.

Ive worked over 8+ years in the pizza business and these guys know exactly how to not only make great pizza, but provide the best experience as well. Full visibility on the chefs gives you insight on how much pride these people take their craft. Pizza making goes beyond throwing on toppings at random, and from what Ive seen, there is a science and order of operations to what they do. Everyone works together to get the product out correctly. There is a sense of community amoungst themselves and the customers that is rare to see these days. The effort shows bright in the flavor of the pizza. Excellent beer selections and minimal mark up give you a sense that these people enjoy what they do and hold high regard for their customers. Ill always make this my number one choice of pizza in Sacramento.

Searching the web for a whole grain crust pizza in Sacramento I discovered a happy review in the Sacramento Bee about this hole in the wall not far from Sac State on J Street, and am happy, myself, to confirm this is our new go-to pizzeria in Sacramento. Dad and Allen gobbled up The Primo (salami, pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, black olives, green peppers, red onion, tomatoes and marinara sauce). Mom and I added anchovies to The Fresh Veggie (same vegies as in the Primo). We shared a "family" size Greek salad with individual servings of Ranch or blue cheese salad dressing, and we all loved everything that we ate. The crust was chewy which made me happy. The vegies were hot yet fresh and crisp. I don/t want to waste my calories on any other pizza. This place is greatt.

Hot City Pizza is like a Dive Pizza Joint, if thats a thing. Not in a bad way, in the best way possible, sort of like an awesome dive bar. The atmosphere is no frills, a little dingy, and not very well designed, but its awesome! The pizza is delicious, and there are plenty of great local beers on tap. The beer and pizza are a little on the pricey side to keep my rating from being 5 stars, but this is a great joint. It would be awesome if they offered some happy hours on their beers. Also, if youre lucky enough, you might be able to find some "buy 1 get 1 free" coupons in a local coupon book.

They have some very interesting pizzas on the menu! I tried a "Greek" pizza the other day, I forget the name of it but it was pretty good! We are talking white sauce, chicken, artichoke hearts, kamala olives, and feta cheese. Very delicious. Also their cheese breadsticks were satisfactory. I went in to pick up the pizza and noticed they have a great selection of beers on tap, actually a collection that would blow away quite a few local bars. It was small inside and empty when I went in, but I hope they stay in business for many more years to come.

Great pizza and a fantastic beer selection. Nestled next to opa opa this cozy oven fired pizza haven serves good pies. I like the supremo but the veggie was fresh and good as well. Sometimes these little places can surprise you. You need to check this one out and do not forget to say the rooster sent you.

The best pizza experience Ive had in Sacramento, CA . I came here last night around 8:30 and immediately got a table for two without having to wait (granted it was rainy so things were probably a little slow). The atmosphere, food and service were all perfect. I will definitely be coming back again.

Waited over 25 min past the estimated time. When the pizzas were ready, it wasnt brought to my attention. Not big on a premium paying system (the pizza are expensive) when the service is not even half decent. I was left wondering how long were my pizzas stuffed up there for? Not a fan.

The whole wheat crust is a nice shake up from the norm. They are very liberal with the amount of toppings on their specialty pizzas, so you never feel cheated. The best part about this place is the rotating beer selection which are always at VERY affordable prices.

Its ok. The crust is whole wheat and chewy, in a good way, but it is kind of floppy. Typically I like a pie whose slices can hold all of the toppings without having to perform a two handed balancing act. That being said, their special combos are creative and tasty.

This place is spectacular! Really cheap, friendly staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. The chocolate "dumplings" are to die for and they are only 65 cents! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants a cheap sub, plate of pasta, or pizza pie.
