One star because there isnt a 1/2 star. Before we get to far I feel like I need to disclose that I have taken all of the Wilton cake decorating classes and that I have provided many great cakes for my friends and family including wedding cakes. I just want you to know that I know a thing or two about making cake. I am going to break this up into customer service and the cake itself. I feel that these are 2 totally different items and should be considered differently. The Cake. The cake was torted with layers of what I assume was supposed to be custard but it tasted like regular old pudding to me. Now using custard/pudding is a great way to add moisture to your cake and if done correctly most people have no idea what is in the middle of their cake. That unfortunately was not the case this time. There was enough in there to call this a Boston Cream IMO. Too much moisture like this does stupid things to the texture of the cake especially right next to the pudding. Now there is a rubbery chewy thing going on and it is quite unpleasant. For a specialty cake called "champagne cake" I would have expected something more elegant and with a lot better flavor. The Buttercream was rather gritty and to be honest I have never run across that in making hundreds of pounds of frosting. So I am guessing this might indicate that there is something added to the frosting other than flavor, butter, and thinning item such as milk or cream. For the price of this cake I feel that * It wasnt very well decorated and should have been much prettier * For a boutique cake place the flavors should have been sock rocking * The over all texture of everything should have been better The service Of course you can sell the best stuff in the world and if your customer service fails you stand to loose it all. I was only visiting Napa and of course for wine tours. But these are not regular wine tours most are off the beaten path and require a reservation. While out in the middle of no where, actually sitting down for a tasting we get called by the staff and told they are closing a half hour earlier and we need to come get the cake. What a huge impact to our schedule this is, you try getting 8 people out of a vineyard, paid up and back in a car to race back . Well we almost there but realized we were not going to make the time deadline so we called again and nicely asked if they would stay we were in route and almost there. They then demanded we bring cash. WHAT? Who has cash any more? But not only that they wanted exact change. To me this whole ordeal was unreal. Never I have heard of staff closing early when they know they have a pick up and never has anyone changed policy and asked for cash. Overall I can say that quite possibly it was a bad day for cake making and the customer service might just killed us ever wanting to try again.

Lived in Napa for over 30 years .. Butter Cream is a Napa Icon.. Been going there for years. Went in to have Breakfast this morning.. The wait staff all had scowls on their face it was very uninviting.. Sat down took the waitress several minutes to bring us menus. Left came back 5 minutes later an asked what drinks we wanted. Knew what we wanted to order told her an we was told I cant take your order before the table next to you.. They werent ready to order.. The food was ok service during meal was minimal. Then to find out my neighbor whom works there got yelled at by this waitress due to the poor tip I left for the crappy service. She was lucky it wasnt 2 pennies. Then the manager had the nerve to say I was rude to the waitress.. If thats the way to treat locals an employes NO THANKS. I WILL NOT DO BUSINESS WITH AGAIN.. I miss the old owners RIP!

Graduated Napa High 1970, and Butter Cream ~is~ heavenly!! Best place for fresh french bread, donuts, pastries, and in our family tradition: pink champagne cake with whipped cream frosting! For birthdays, and just about every special occasion, so yummy, Ive even ordered from Sacramento, and driven to Napa to pickup to bring to my daughter in Sonoma! Love Butter Cream! Basic breakfast, and a good place to meet up, is just a down home thing to do! Napa will always be a small town to me, no matter what they do....used to be able to walk down the street and see ppl every day, and say Hi, just because, theyre still there! (twinkle~twinkle) Thank you, from the heart, Butter Cream!!! (-:

My first time eating in their diner. Totally forgot they had a diner. I mean their pastries and donuts are off the hook on its own. Nevermind the Pink Champagne cake .. gawd .. who would do this to my life?!?!?! Its so freakin good, I cant stand it. I hear its diabetic friendly, so thats a +++. Their breakfast though .. so freakin good. Well I could only talk about the Chicken Fried Steak, scrambled eggs, hash browns and sourdough toast. OMG so good. Service was mostly quick and friendly. More quick than friendly. Ive eaten their twice now, yes I got the same thing, still good.

I was born and grew up in Napa. My mom used to take me and my sisters to Butter Cream for their delicious desserts. They used to give us their yummy sugar cookies for free when we came in. Having fond memories from the past has made me go there a couple of times now as an adult. I live in Roseville, CA so it is a special trip to make. I have ordered their Beehive cake and placed an order for my daughters 2nd birthday cake. They both were very disappointing. It is not the same and you can tell there has definitely been a change in ownership. I will have to find a new favorite place:(

Best donuts in town! Not the best restaurant. The servers can be grouchy and food service can be slow if you opt to eat in. I ordered breakfast and had the waitress bring me the wrong items and then tell me that was what I ordered because thats what she wrote down.. she had misunderstood what I said and didnt replace the item and charged full price. I dont recommend eating here as a restaurant, but the donuts are 100% worth the wait. Get a ticket and wait it out. Then get a box! Super great donuts!

Baked goods or breakfast. Buttercream is a must. The biscuits and gravy is so delicious its like being in the South. Apple fritters, old fashion/cake/raised/bar donuts are typical fare here. But they do make a special bacon maple bar with a strip of bacon on top of the bar. They are they only place in town that does strawberry rhubarb pie, which is my favorite. Weve been going to this place for years. When you see the pink box, you know its gotta be Buttercream.

Great donuts, decent food. However, I had a huge issue with raw meat being set next to peoples food (getting ready to be se served). A cook picked up a plate, and the plate with someones food was actually touching the raw meat while shes talking to another employee! This is the SECOND time Ive witnessed raw meat on the serving counter next to someones food. I will not be eating there again.
