Tried this out based on decent (not great) online reviews. Giant sushi bar where you are separated from the chefs by some sort of rock display. To cross the rocks, food is thrust at you on paddles. The point of this entirely escapes me. Doesnt make for the best atmosphere but not a big bad point either. Sushi - slightly below average. Fish is not the top grade. rice is sloppy and not well done. Pretty obvious they dont have an all-star sushi team. Prices - average, except for the quality I would put it a little high. Definitely no bargain even though the food looks and tastes like it should be. *** Worst was the waitstaff. Apparently they have been trained to rush you out. I dont get this at all considering the bar was almost entirely empty. The rest of the large dining area had only about 10 customers. While there is still food on plates they are trying to take them away. Bill is presented awkwardly in front of you while you still have food and drinks. Then they kept checking to see if I put a credit card inside. No, we werent dawdling - dined in about 30-40 minutes. Btw, I didnt get the cooked plates but I couldnt understand the basis for those either. They ran in the low-20s, and looked like something from a diner. Not many options in Southern Marin but Ill definitely cross this off the list.

The more I go here, the more I love it. Friendly staff, a large enough dining room that you rarely wait if you need to go last minute. The sushi bar area is awesome... we love to sit there and watch the guys grill. The sushi is fantastic vs the price and other places.... (Sushi Ran doesnt even use sustainable practices so what are you paying for beyond showy-ness?). But its really the grill, and all the options and combos for delicious, fresh grilled veggies and meat. They are so warm and inviting, and albeit a little institutional, its a place I doubt I will get tired of. I am still searching for the best sushi in Marin (if you have an opinion, let me know), but this is a simple, fast, delicious, affordable way to have your sushi and eat it to.

Im not sure why this place gets the reviews it does.... although I notice the average is under 4 stars, and on the three occasions Ive eaten here, possibly one of those times got close to 4 star-worthy. In general, the food here is "workman-like" -- not bad, not boring, but also not really noteworthy. I notice that all three times Ive been here, its been a business meal or a group-of-friends meal -- not a place Id ever go to as a destination or special dinner. You wont be disappointed eating here... but youll be wondering why you chose this place.

This restaurant serves the usual assortment of Japanese cuisine, with a Robata for the grilled items, which is fairly unique in the Bay Area. The sushi and sashimi are okay, with most fish lacking in freshness/flavor and some even on the dry side. The soba and udon are decent. The food itself would have gotten three stars if priced for the quality, but the total cost of dinner was quite a bit higher than what we thought it was worth.

For a larger sushi place, its quite good. You would think that it lacks the charm that smaller places have but no, it has a nice ambiance and the food is very good. Ive been here a number of times and always enjoyed my visit. This is also one of the better sushi places for groups of people or a business lunch as it has the ability to accommodate.

Had dinner here, and was very disappointed. They dont just use too much rice in their rolls, they use waaaay too much. My soft shell crab roll had close to 1" rice around it, and tuna roll was similar. I couldnt finish the pair. The fish and other ingredients were tasty, but really got drowned out.

Not very good - the sukiyaki was too salty and the beef very fatty. The atmosphere is quite ordinary and the service slow. Marin needs a traditional Japanese restaurant. The shrimp tempura wasnt good either and the oysters had too much breading.

Simple, but really great fish. Its a family kind of place, but if youre on a date -- sit at the sushi bar. Solid every time -- great sushi, great dishes -- just simple and to the point to get your sushi fix on.

We had many kinds of sushi last night and it was excellent! Our service was fine, not much for her to do, but she was very nice and and pleasant. We liked the atmosphere and live nearby so will come again.

Sushis gotta be fresh and tasty, right? Robata is a busy place for a reason - they seem to get it right every time. Aside from the usual, we like the hamachi collar off the grill. Its a special night out!

robata is my take-out favorite in so. marin. wonderful spicy tuna rolls, gyoza and ohitashi (spinach in soyu sauce with crushed fish on top). miso soup is also right-on.
