My dad was drafted to serve in the military during the last few years of the Vietnam war. He was one of the lucky few who drew a card that sent him to Germany rather than the jungles of southeast Asia. What I got from this legacy was a handed down love for German culture, and an appreciation in particular for German food and beer. Nowhere in the Bay Area can you get a tastier glimpse of both than at Ritas German Deli, AKA Munchner Haus. I dont know for a fact, but suspect the lovely blonde woman we meet behind the counter is Frau Rita herself. She has been making the most amazing sandwiches and serving my family the best German treats since we moved to Fremont in 1989. My only complaint is that she no longer serves the pork roast sandwich. It was literally bliss served hot on a bun. But the remaining fare is all delicious. Take your time here. Dine in or grab a beer as you wait for your order to prep. Transport yourself for a minute to the German countryside. Life is good. Thank you, Munchner Haus!

I recently moved to Fremont and have been looking for a new favorite lunch place to order and eat a turkey deli sandwich. It was mid-afternoon and I was the only customer. I am German myself and I am a very out-going, friendly conversationalist. When I asked he woman in charge a couple of questions, she was quite indifferent and downright cold towards me. I overlooked that and tried being friendly again when I picked up the completed sandwhich. More rude behavior!! To hell with this place. I like to spend my money with businesses that are comfortable to deal with. I am affiliated with the resort and hospitality industry for over 35 years and I am 58 years old. The owner of this restaurant could stand to learn some basics about customer service. The sandwich was okay, but service was CAPUT!!!

To all those who talked about the rudeness of this place: I never made it inside due to the rudeness. I was walking my 18lb Cavalier puppy past this place on the sidewalk and stopped, and just checked out the place from the outside (wasnt going to go in with my dog of course) since I love German food. I was planning on coming back later without my dog. The people working inside (woman, and a man) rudely told me to go away and "no dogs" even though I was outside on the sidewalk!! Id probably be paying their power bill with all the business I would have given them - from what it sounds like their food is great. And Ive been to Germany many times and the people there are really friendly...dont know what the problem is with this place. I hope you all have a better experience!!

The place in Fremont to pick up your German import specialties and enjoy German food. The only missing item is fresh baked pretzels. Just one woman was on duty at the time with a constant stream of customers. Its amazing that she can handle it, and I overheard her say to someone that she was in pain. I had a chicken schnitzel sandwich. This was breaded chicken on a dutch crust roll. As always, you wait a long time for what ever you order, but its worth the wait. I also ordered a Coke, and received a glass of ice. You have to get your own drink out of the refrigerator. There are a few tables inside and the patio outside to dine. Inside there are a lot of books scattered all over to read, and the paintings on the wall have price tags on them.

Its nice to see that Munchner Haus is still around, and at the same location to boot! My Father would take my siblings and me here every once in a while where we would each order our favorite sandwiches and potato salad. He would then buy his favorite jar of German hot mustard which we would all enjoy for the next couple of weeks as we would use it on our home made sandwiches. A very German atmosphere in the middle of the hectic Fremont suburban streets. A brief moment of solitude.

I Love this place! The food is great, the people warm and friendly, and the atmosphere reminds me of my youth back east in German communities in Milwaukee and Chicago. I NEVER miss a chance to eat here when I come to Fremont -- one of the VERY FEW good ethnic places in an otherwise plastic strip mall fast food desert. Munchner Haus Deli Ach JA!

Really like this place--its definitely my speed! Its smaller than Gourmet Haus Staudt in Redwood City, but more authentic somehow--the staff here all speak German. The food we had was pretty good, and theyve got a good selection of beer. Really enjoyed just sitting outside sipping a beer, despite the view of the parking lot :)

This is a nice delicacy you normally wont find in a place like Fremont! They have many imported German items and their sandwhiches are very yummy! The owner slices the meat after you order! Food is good but definitely pricey. Decor is cute, not much seating though.

The owner is a bit intimidating but not rude. Takes a while for her to make a sandwich but I would rather wait for a great sadwich than get a crappy one quickly. The menu doesnt really tell you much. The food is pricey but worth it.

I dont recommend as a restaurant. Not really German except for bratwurst. Really just an expensive deli. Prices way to high for the serving size. Looks nice and had a good selection of German groceries.

I agree the lady is not friendly. Almost rude. Long wait for sandwich. I have been there a few times but not going back. Nothing special about the food. Dont bother with this place.

Is this business moving? Because of the big downtown project, and Nation getting torn down? This makes me sick if this place is driven to close or move out of town.
