Been dropping by the Shanty for a while now. Its our favorite place. Theres always an interesting beer on special and in the years Ive been sampling there has been only one I was not particularly fond of. In other words, I love the special. It encourages me to explore new and interesting brews Ive never even heard of. I challenge anyone to find a cheaper, better beer than whatever theyve got on special for $2.50. Sure, lots of places have Pabst on tap for $2, and I love me some Pabst, but the Shanty special is flatly always far superior. The patio is reminiscent of a grotto. Its cozy, there are lots of birds and lots of green leafy things called plants. A very nice place to enjoy yourself in the early afternoon and comfortable to sit out at night even when the place is on the busy side. Plus if your a smoker, you cant really beat sitting at a bar that feels like a backyard enjoying a cigarette with beer in hand. On another note, my GF cant do gluten, not doesnt do gluten, cant....as in, will go in to shock. The Shanty always has a few varities of gluten-free (not gluten removed) beer and we both enjoy these as well. Its still beer, by the way, just made from sorgham and various other grains that dont contain gluten. Just as good with just as much alcohol, and a bit lighter on your stomach to boot. If your looking for a place thats a little more lowkey and a bit more social than your typical bar on 4th, The Shanty is your place. Its a fantastic way to start and end a night out on 4th Ave.

The Shanty is the worst bar on 4th Avenue, and I will never return to it. They do not accept any other form of identification except a Drivers License---not a passport (which is internationally accepted, mind you) or a state-issued ID card. I do not know of any other bar in Tucson that has those same rules. Last weekend, I didnt even have a tab running and I was handed someone elses credit card and Drivers License by the bartender (and the photo didnt resemble me in the least). When I tried to find a manager to tell about the problem (what if I wasnt a nice person, and I just took the cards!?), I was promptly escorted off the property. I was not drunk and unruly, I was trying to convey a potential problem. Every member of the staff was rude, and wouldnt even consider it would be wrong to go handing out IDs and credit cards without checking the photo or name. There are a hundred better bars on 4th Avenue. Go to Plush. Or The Surly Wench. Or Ches. Or OMalleys. Or Maloneys. Anywhere but The Shanty!

I love this place! It is probably my favorite bar in Tucson and definitely on the avenue. I am not sure why others have the complaints that they do about this place! Its not a dive bar and its a bit classier than some other establishments on 4th but nothing wrong with that. For starters the gorgeous bar tender who looks like a young Brad Pitt greets you when you walk in the door. He has excellent recommendations on beers including a lenghty menu and some great choices on tap. I had a delicious cherry cider beer which was on tap. The multiple pool tables and Foose ball tables made for a good time. I liked the old photographs on the wall of downtown tucson. The lamps seem to be gas lit and the chairs and tables look original. If you love antique and vintage surroundings then this place is for you! Check out the beautiful patio too... lots of greenery and a nice fountain!

If I could give the Shanty negative stars I would give them ten! They dont let you into the bar unless you have a Drivers License or a Military ID. I have a friend that has epilepsy and she has a state issued ID, but they would not let her in. Even after explaining the situation to the bouncers they just stated that that is the policy. They wouldnt budge. We were even out for her 25th Birthday! My friend doesnt drink because it increases the risk of a seizure, but she does like to go and hang out with friends. This is discrimination. They discriminate against anyone who cant drive including the Disabled, Mentally Handicapped, Elderly, and people with disorders that do not allow them to drive. The Shanty is breaking the LAW! The people that run this place make me sick.

Reliable political and printed-press watering hole for many a decade. The outdoor patio is good for conversation when the weathers favorable. The Shanty is on the corner of the quiet end of Fourth Avenue, Tucsons former Hippie Haven now home to dance clubs, great bars and music, burlesque -- the full range of student-oriented entertainment. (By day, its nearby to a popular bicycle repair shop and a well-regarded glass-centered art school.). The Shanty is directly across a narrow street from The Coronet, one of Tucsons newest and best-liked haute-cuisine restaurants, also with streetside patio dining.

Nicely priced drinks. Free popcorn. No food. But bring your own ~ pizza, burgers, plate lunch, anything, from outside, home, your moms, whatever (its much cheaper this way ~ and encouraged by mgmt). Great atmosphere ~ lots of progressive/tolerant friendly thinkers, talkers at the bar from the nearby University and downtown businesses ~ young and not-as-young; equal males & females. Lots of tables ~ inside and on the patio. Billiard tables. Big screen TV. And right on 4th Ave. What more can I want?

This bar wont allow people with a state issued ID in, it must be a drivers license or passport. So basically it you dont drive or travel internationally this bar doesnt want your money. Its not that great of a bar to begin with, I always found it boring, but the stupidity of refusing a state issue ID is so annoying it makes me write this bar off completely. Especially when theres much better places to go near by like OMalleys or Maloneys.

One of my favorite bars in downtown Tucson! All the bartenders and hostesses are kind. Wide selection of beer and the cocktails are good. They have a nice big bar area, 4 pool tables that are usually taken due to the crowd, a foosball table and even an outdoor area to relax. They also have free popcorn to snack on whether youre at the bar or playing pool.

If you are looking for a chill place to grab a quality drink and have a conversation the Shanty is the place to be. 4th ave. is crawling with overcrowded loud bars that are slammed with frat bros. This place does a great job making everyone feel comfortable and welcome. If you want good service and a tranquil environment, the Shanty is the place to be.

Although this establishment attempts to cultivate the image of a trendy yet still professional establishment, it distinguishes itself only by an air of snobbery that couples with a pretentious and parasitic attempt to capitalize on the local agrarian culture. Its help were both slow and rude. Its drinks are overpriced, and its food ill prepared.

My husband and I walked in to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary (its where we went after our wedding reception), both of us wearing tank tops because it was a hot day. They said they wouldnt serve my husband. A little pretentious for a dive bar on the bottom end of 4th in Tucson. Well take our business elsewhere from now on.
