Im not one to write reviews about companies unless I have extraordinarily good service, or in this case, extraordinarily bad service. If youve lived/been in NYC for even a day you know this is a city of endless movement, people constantly on the go -- taking advantage of every minute -- the constant mentality of "how can I knock off two birds with one stone" type thinking. So, this afternoon, when I walked into Stumptown Coffee off W 8th, thats exactly where my mind was at. Yoga bag on one arm, laptop and work papers on the other. With only a half an hour to complete an hour plus worth of work I sat down, threw up my laptop and quickly rushed over to the counter to order my coffee. Per usual, you order your coffee first then get the password to the wifi -- this wasnt my first time at Stumptown, I knew the drill. However, this time was different. I grabbed my coffee rushed back to my computer only to realize the internet wasnt working. Okay, plan of action -- reset my computer, maybe it was on my end? Nope. Same issue. Look to the guy next to me -- dealing with the same thing. So, I get up walk to the front and ask one of the baristas if he could help me. "Sorry, for some reason your internet doesnt seem to be working. Ive tried restarting my computer but it is not helping. The guy next to me is experiencing the same thing." Response: "Okay, well restart our router, happens often." Awesome. Go sit down and wait .... and wait ... and wait. Clock ticking down and deadline for when I need to be out the door running to my meeting is winding down. Fifteen minutes pass and you can start to see everyone in there, many of the customers college students, looking at each other. So, again I get up and walk to the front to talk to the same guy. "Hi sir, sorry but for some reason it is still not working. Were you able to restart the router?" It wasnt just his response that threw me off guard but his tone and complete disregard for the strength and power of customer service. "No, sorry, guess not. I think someone went back to check on it but Im not sure. Either way, this is a luxury not a required service we provide so I guess youre just going to have to deal with or go somewhere else." I was stunned -- was that response needed? Im a customer sharing with you that a service you normally provide, luxury or not, was not working properly. You REQUIRE customers to purchase coffee and/or food to receive this "luxury service" (unlike competing coffee companies like Starbucks) -- did you really just encourage me to take my business somewhere else just because you didnt want to go five seconds out of your way to see if something was or was not working properly? I didnt say a word - grabbed my stuff, packed up and walked out, leaving my coffee on the table. There is no worse feeling than the feeling that your money was spent on an undeserving and unappreciative individual or business. Regardless of the amount spent it still feels like you were robbed and taken advantage of. So, moving forward, I will do exactly what the employee suggested I do, take my business some where else. Hopefully, after a handful of loyal long standing customers such as myself do so theyll realize that you cant treat your customers like nobodies -- and that 80% of business is repeat business. Stumptown Coffee, youve lost my business and my respect. Hope you clean up your act before your once crowded coffee shop turns into a ghost town due to disrespectful employees and unappreciative company culture.

Stumptown Cofee, located just a couple blocks from Washington Square Park, has been one of the most consistency delightful coffee experiences I have ever had. Between the daily coffee tastings at 2pm, the deliciously refreshing nitro cold brew, and the splendid espresso drinks, there is nothing more I could want. Even the basic latte is wonderful without fail. I have yet to anything to their lattes, both hot and iced, as they are perfect without sugar or sweetener of any kind. The staff is extremely knowledgeable, something you can immediately appreciate during the daily 2pm coffee tastings. While at times the knowledgeable atmosphere may come across as pretentious, its really a result of people who are not simply paid to offer a product, but who enjoy the product themselves. Seating is a bit limited, which is a given with any coffee shop, especially in Manhattan, but overall the place does not feel cramped or excessively cozy. The decorations are mostly functional, in the sense that coffee-brewing apparatuses and coffee products make up the bulk of what you see around the place. Overall, Stumptown is a wonderful experience, both in terms of product and atmosphere.

Expensive but good coffee. Is it really worth the price? Well.... on a day when youre sick of the same ol Starbucks and looking for an alternative that isnt Dunkin Donuts, Stumptown swoops in to save the day (or morning!) I have to admit that I enjoy the ambiance more than the actual coffee. Its just so cute, sitting on the corner of the street, all warm and such. Luring me in, softly whispering in my ear, urging me to purchase an overpriced caffeinated beverage when I really dont need it. But what they hey. Do their coffee beans justify the price? No idea... and their baristas dont do a very good job at informing customers about anything. But I am intrigued by their ability to make a cappuccino so sloooooooowly. Um, speed isnt their forte. Fortunately, the coffees good. Oh- get a stamp card.

The vibe was nice-ish, the line was quick, and the staff was friendly. But my coffee smelt exactly like fish. The barista had filled half my cup with the very little remains of one pot, and then fill the rest of the cup with another pot of coffee. I dont know if that was why, but it was horrible. Also, the atmosphere at the coffee shop was more comfortable for a person coming to do quiet work, on a laptop, book, something of that sort. It isnt really somewhere you go to have a conversation with a friend for a long time. I felt like I was disturbing the people around me. I dont know if Id ever go again, but if I did, it would have to be after Ive forgotten about that nasty fish tasting coffee.

Its clear that these guys know what theyre doing - every last tiny detail, from the careful selection of pastries from extremely high-end yet relatively uncommonly-used local bakeries, to the small gilded letters that wish you good luck underneath every cup, implies a level of experience and competence that is very rarely seen in New York, even amongst the best of the espresso places out there. These guys just get it, and it shows. My picks would be the latte (served in a large tumbler if requested) and Magpie hand pies if available. Try to get there early to secure a seat as frequent visitors tend to hang around for a while.

All my favorite cafes in the neighborhood closed or evolved into horrendous tapas bars, so I set out to find replacement spots. Stumptown is my second favorite recent find. Its surprisingly big inside and the seats are moderately comfortable. There arent many tables--just enough for people to feel comfortable hunkering down while leaving plenty of room for the long lines that form. people are serious about this coffee. There are a few outlets so those who need to plug in can do so. Overall, its a good place to work. I absolutely love the atmosphere--wood paneling, exposed brick, very bohemian.
