Grand Sichuan is a mainstay in the New York Chinese food scene. The flavors are fresh and vibrant and if you order correctly, tongue-searingly spicy. First the negative: service. The greeter/cashier is always in a foul mood and has little tolerance for a first-timer questions. Upon ordering carryout once via phone she grew impatient when I couldn remember the exact name of the dish and hung up on me. The servers also are quite curt and will walk away from the table if you aren ready to order or if you have too many questions. Once you accepted the service shortcomings, you are in for some delicious fare. Appetizers of Dan Dan noodles and wontons in spicy oil are dead-solid. You can ramp up the heat with dry-fried chicken with chilis and peppercorns which bring both scorching hot spiciness as well as tongue-numbing sensations from the peppercorns. Tea-smoked duck is another specialty which is executed flawlessly. The best dish, however, is the sour string beans with minced pork. This dish has it all: garlic, ginger, chilies, vinegary chopped beans, plenty of salt and oil, porcine goodness, all in an intoxicating blur.

Grand Sichuan St. Marks: Smoked Tea Duck-- youve made it-- reached a true OASIS delicate tea essences, soft steamed rice buns: you create a sandwich of the royalty with cool cucumbers, flavorful hoisin sauce. Crispy duck skin signifies a special occasion that is true indeed (because were not in Kansas anymore Toto)! Sichuan cold noodle is decidedly unique (sans the sweet sesame peanut sauce): instead its about the SPICES, the heat-- yes its HOT! Young NYU crowd (AKA CUTE! :) Women run the house with a kind (but business-like manner). Ms. Gao the manager is nice but professional. Lala means spicy in chinese but also sounds like some great fun doesnt it? Colorful flashing led lights signify festive. Hunan cuisine is included on the extensive menu, which also includes staples like everything with potatoes but done in a tasty culinary hand.

The menu is insane, as in enormous - with everything from cold ox tongue & tripe with hot pepper sauce, Loofah (theyre not just for exfoliating anymore!!) with scallop or shrimp, and sliced conch, to an American Chinese Food section and all the usual Chinese take out suspects. Among the Chefs Specialties (the Loofah is in this section) is Braised Whole Fish (bone in) which is my favorite. It is offered with either bean sauce or scallion (I order the scallion with a broth-y scallion, ginger & soy sauce). Mother-in-Law loves the Crispy Quail. Definitely call well ahead to order and dont expect a red carpet. Just call, pay, pickup & go . . . then feast on some better than average Chinese Fare in front of your TiVo, with you comfortably stripped down to your underpants (but not if Mother in Law is there :). Soup with dumplings is good too.

It is against the standard of Grand Sichuan which I hold all other Sichuan restaurants. An hour or more of mid day 23rd st crawling traffic would be happily endured, the spirit buoyed by memory of perfectly spiced fresh chicken. Forgo the tempting deals of the lunch special; stick to the special fresh chicken page. There is a blurb on this page, an important blurb. Read and know of this important blurb, discuss it with your co-diners, or if you are here alone, let the blurb speak to you as a trusted companion. I got C1, dry fresh baby chicken hot and spicy. Service was excellent and they serve tea and water in a comfortable setting with great murals on every wall. After your meal, in the glow of satiation, a plate of oranges and fortune cookies is placed before you. "Creative energy is up- capitalize on it."

I visited this place today I got there at 10pm they close at 11p. The hostess didnt want to set the table for us. I had to ask to have the table cleaned. The table cloth was dirty and she didnt want to change that either. Finally, we were seated at a ready made table where we should have been sat initially. Lazy. The service was poor, the waitress was rude. Once we ordered, the plates were thrown to the table. The vegetables werent cook all the way in my kung pao dish. Clearly the cook was rushed, there was something in my kung pao that was minty. I sent it back. Tasted so bad Im calling the health department on monday. It was truly a horrible experience, poor service and really bad food.

I give this place a 5 star rating because I believe soup dumplings are some of the most delicious foods that can be eaten, and Grand Sichuan has the best soup dumplings. The atmosphere is that of a somewhat dated Chinese restaurant. The service is unfriendly (who cares?). Free tea when you sit down. All of the other Chinese food I have tried here has been delicious as well. They also have some unique Chinese dishes that you wont find at any old Chinese restaurant. The free, hot tea and the delicious and comforting soup dumplings make this my favorite place to go on a cold winter day, especially if it is snowing.

This is my favorite Sichuan restaurant in the city. The service is always on point and entertaining, and we have become good friends with the wait staff. The food is excellent. We have tried more than half of the menu and you cannot go wrong. The Soup Dumplings!! You cannot come here without an order (or four) of soup dumplings, they are always perfect on the outside, never soggy or drained in the dish. the meat inside is delicious, well seasoned and you dont find weird bony bits. The decor is nothing trendy, just simple classic Chinese dining, but appeasing. I highly recommend this restaurant.

One of the more authentic Chinese restaurants north of Chinatown. Dismal vegetarian options (cabbage, egg roll, tofu) but could not get a clear answer if the vegetable soup was made with meat stock, so good luck with that. The loofah is delicious, order without scallops, and you will not look at your bath sponge again in the same way. Meat eaters will rejoice. Ignore the American menu items. Service was mixed. Expect your food to be well-prepared, quickly delivered in whatever order it is ready, and dont expect to have your backside kissed. Do expect to leave feeling full and satisfied.

I would never order from this place again, its a sad day when your an American and someone from another country acts racist. Whats so wrong with living in Chelsea? I placed an order they said you come down and pick up order. I said why no one else ever asked me to do that. Then they said we wont bring if you no come down, I said fine I will come down, then she said no I dont think you will come down so you must pick up. I said what? Is this a joke? how about you dont make my order at all you racist Im placing a complaint you suck.

Of your near by and want Chinese food then its OK, but its not worth taking a trip. The food was a 5 or 6 out of a 10 rating. I got there 50 minutes before closing and since the moment I walked in I was being pressured to leave. I was forced to pay while I was eating and they were still 25 minutes from closing time. The craziest thing was that I left a 10% tip even though the service was mediocre and pushy, & the waitress returned the bill and said she only accepted 15% tip or more, WTF. ¡Can you believe this!
