This incident occurred in early October 2016, I held off on posting it because I was hoping to speak with the restaurant manager first, as I had previously had many pleasant and positive experiences at this restaurant. However, being unsafe with allergies involved is an automatic 1 star for me. At lunch on this visit, one of the service people decided to throw a highly unprofessional hissy-fit? tantrum? because I sent my food back because it had sesame seeds, and when my boyfriend ordered our food he had said no sesame seeds on both (I was outside with the dog). She insisted that he had only said on his (both our friend and my boyfriend confirmed he said both), and gave me attitude for wanting it remade. Im sorry, I dont want to sneeze on my boyfriend and have him break out in hives. If you make a mistake, especially an allergy related mistake, thats a pretty big screw up. In this case it would have been a semi-okay screw up, since I wasnt the allergic one, but seriously, own it and move on. Eventually I got my remade bowl back, but then had to return it because the meat had sesame seeds stuck to it, as if they had taken the ingredients from my allergen-covered bowl, rinsed them off, and then used the contaminated ingredients to remake the bowl. I went inside and spoke to the manager, quietly, as this was a restaurant we had been to several times, and until now everyone had been friendly and understanding of my boyfriends allergies. I spoke to the manager about the blonde haired girls behavior at the counter and to show him I still had sesame seeds on my food. I got my money back, but I ended up having to go without food from what had been my favorite restaurant, on a day when we went there to help me cheer up because of my cold. Later on that day, I found out that when I had left to go back outside where my other friend and dog were, the blonde haired girl went into the kitchen and threw a more elaborat tantrum. I have no idea what her problem was, or what she had against people with allergies, but she was, reportedly, shouting so loudly in the kitchen that in the dining room people could hear her yelling about how people who had allergies that were that bad shouldnt even be at the restaurant, or go out to eat at all. Again, I was outside, so I heard this from my boyfriend and one of our friends who was inside with him. After learning of it, I attempted to contact the restaurant the next day, both by phone and on yelp, got told I would be hearing back from a manager on the phone and never heard anything, got no reply on yelp back then, or the other times I have attempted to contact them.

I just got a Yellow Curry, Rice Noodle, Kielbasa soup. Nothing added on, the price came to a bit over $8.50. I just about had a mouthgasam when I tried the broth of the soup, then added all the fixings, was a GREAT soup for under 9 bucks, seriously. That is CHEAP. This filled me up, I was quite hungry and Im a bigger guy too. The look of it, didnt seem like it would mix well, but O M G, it worked great together. I want to try the Miso broth, with some unique noodle choice, udon or sorba(?) with Portabello... May add spinach. As of right now I highly suggest this place, great food. Interesting atmosphere. I WILL be getting more, soon.

Had late dinner on the 5th, the gal (bundled up in a coat) taking orders wasnt very well versed in helping us order, (not like the nice young man who took over around 11:15p) She didnt tell us that scallions, carrots and bean sprouts come on the build your own... I asked for a menu to read what was on the "Special House" bowls because the tiny writing on the chalk board is way too small, but they dont have printed menus. My bowl, especially the broth was excellent, but the eggplant was a bit too chewy and bitter.

Super delicious, kind of expensive and a bit disorganized, but that was maybe a month or two after they opened. Its a really neat, new take on dining out that Bangor has never seen before. You go to the counter and look up at a bored that basically breaks down the ordering process for you starting with step 1 all the way through what type of noodles, meat or veggies, extra veggies and broth you might be looking for. It tasted really good, the people were pleasant enough and I will definitely go here again!

In America, we consider ourselves to have 4 tastes, but in Japan they add a 5th taste and call it "Umami" - meaning rounded, rich and savory. If you are looking for a fun, relaxing, no-frills atmosphere with beautiful food warm in your belly for a reasonable price, Umami could be right up your alley. The scallion pancakes are my kids favorites with their chicken wings coming in a close second. They offer a variety of noodle soups that you can modify and make your own easily.

I have traveld all over the world and live in citys where diverse meals like this are on the regular. Moving back to northern Maine to be closer to my family and loosing some bar hopping and finding cuisine like that is served at umami in Bangor has helped me stick around here. Great tasting food, sweet service and radical drinks. Keep up the great work umami!!!!!!!

Noodles drowned in salty hoisin sauce with 3 snap peas. Inedible. Management watched the counter staff and didnt help when the place was overrun with concert goes. Waited 45 minutes for food. I understand nit being able to cope with that many people but the food itself was way overpriced and I I couldnt finish half over it. Pure salt.

The soup itself was okay but not as flavorful as the noodle place in Whole Foods. The boiled egg was cold. Some of the chicken was fatty. The soup condiments were open and flies were hovering. They were out of soba noodles. The lady at the front desk felt the need to explain every little thing on the menu when I didnt ask or care.

Best noodles Ive ever had. A bit pricey so I wont be able to eat it everyday. But I would definitely recommend! You get to build your own dish with plenty of choices. Fantastic! Nice atmosphere as well. Exceptionally nice staff.

Excellent noodle bar! We tried the yellow curry broth and the chicken and pork broth - both delicious (albeit a touch salty for the chicken broth). Lots of fresh veggie options. Great service. Cant wait to try some more stuff!!

This place has awesome noodle bowls I specifically am gluten-free and they have their own cooker for their rice noodles and the only downside is is the inside is a little shabby looks a little dated. But the food is phenomenal.

My wife is very picky. She ate all of an Employee Meal that her body would allow. I had the Tokyo Tonkutsu with tom yum broth and it was fantastic. Its just too bad that we live 3 hours away.

An absolute gem in downtown Bangor; the crispy tofu, fresh shaved carrots, crunchy sprouts, and Ive never tasted a better veggie broth; vegetarian dining is no longer a compromise in taste.
