I dined at Volare for the second time last Saturday night after Keeneland. My first time to Volare was about three years ago. I went with three girlfriends for my birthday. We shared wine and appetizers, then lemon drop martinis. The service was very good and the appetizers were tasty. Two days ago, I had my first dinner experience at Volare. I was there with my date and five friends. We had a bottle of wine in the bar first. The wine list had plenty of very reasonable bottles. A friend had the marinated mozzerella appetizer and raved about it. The bar has a new "bar-menu" of appetizers, served like tapas. Tapas are very "in" right now in Louisville. It was a little too warm in the bar area. We were seated and ordered appetizers. We sat outside on the covered patio (it is enclosed). It was a little chilly out on the patio. The calamari was light and crispy--just right. And a waiter even put it on the plates for us. The sauce with it was a plain marinara that needed a little bit of spicy to zip it up. But the calamari itself was very good. The antipasto was like I remembered it. Presented on a large plate, lots of meats, cheeses, and veggies to share. My only qualm with it is that there wasnt a lot of cheese. The cheese on it was very hard chunks of parmesan. Volare should add a softer cheese to the plate, too. I ended up chipping away at one of the parmesan chunks and putting it on my dates caesar salad. Otherwise, the antipasto was great. For my entree, I ordered the scallops appetizer. Three scallops were delightfully presented on a long, rectangular platter. They were in a bright green puree. Atop each scallop was some crispy prosciuto bacon and a microgreen salad. This was absolutely perfect! If you go to Volare, it is a must-have! My dates filet entree was huge. Plenty of food for two meals. The filet comes in a dried berry sauce that is a little peculiar since the sweet mixes with the savory. He wasnt a fan of the sauce. I liked it, but in moderation. The filet was a huge filet, tender, and with an essence of goat cheese. I didnt see much arugula (also supposed to be in the stuffing) but it was still tasty. It was served with delicious broccolini and a mound of polenta. The polenta was okay, a tad dry, and a little unexpected with the other items on the plate. However, as far as polenta goes, it was very good polenta. It tasted like it was half parmesan cheese! After dinner, we had a slice of carrot cake and tiramisu for the table. The cream between the layers of tiramisu was just perfect. And the presentation could not have been better. Powdered sugar and cocoa were artfully designed on the plate. A large flower made of sugar was placed next to some seasonal berries. It was just lovely to look at! The tiramisu is also a must-have! Youll have to find parking nearby on Frankfort Ave. or a sidestreet. We didnt have any trouble finding a space. Valet was available for $5. A nice detail, after eating, our plates were whisked away and boxed in the kitchen. We received claim check numbers to pick up the food later. It was nice to not have the boxes sitting around while we enjoyed dessert and after-dinner drinks.

I was very excited to experience a new restaurant with my boyfriend. It was his 40th birthday and I made reservations for Saturday 15, 2007. We arrived and had a few drinks at the bar. We were seated and I was impressed with the whole staff and restaurant. The waiter was great! Appetizers and dinner were fantastic! We were ready to pick a desert when an horrible odor (sewage smell) that literally took our breath away. After having such a wonderful time, we had to ask for our desert to be packaged to go (Creme Brulle doesnt have the same affect in a styrofoam container). We had to escape to the bar and wait to sign off on my credit card. The waiter said that this unfortunately was not the first time this has happened. What a shame I thought, such a wonderful Italian restaurant, tasteful setting and marsala that was out of this world, ending what I really wanted to be a special memory, into mentioning that I was sick at my stomach on my way out the door. Please get something done about this or move your location. Such a fine establishment with terrific servers shouldnt leave such a bad stinch for a special evening.

Absolutely amazing from start to finish! We went there for our anniversary and could not have chosen a better place for the occasion. From the moment we walked in to the time we left, we were treated as family by everyone, and in particular, I cannot speak highly enough of Jonathan; who truly took a genuine interest in us and provided the best experience we could have. Our server, Emily, was also on top of her game and provided outstanding service as well. Besides the remarkable service, the food was impeccable! From the warm bread and olive oil, to the calamari appetizer, to the Caesar salad, to the duck, and finally on to the cannoli for dessert, there were no shortcomings on flavor! Although each and every course was superb, the calamari, cannoli, and especially the duck, were hands down the best I have ever had the pleasure of tasting! If for some inexplicable reason you are not into outstanding food and service, do not worry, they also have an amazing selection of bourbons and wines too! Again, I cannot give them enough praise for the entire experience and we cannot wait to go back!

My wife and I went to Volare with our son to celebrate our anniversary. We have an excellent, friendly waiter who took our order and arranged for an off menu item since my son is casein/gluten free. He split a specialty drink for us and changed my order to make it gluten/allergen free. Yes, were a little high maintenance. lol! It was nice to eat in a restaurant where a majority of the men wore jackets to dinner on a Sunday. The duck was well prepared. Not greasy or gamey with a cherry sauce that I wouldve liked to be spicier, but was good. Nice, seasoned roasted potatoes on the side. The Salmon my wife had was probably the best salmon weve ever had. Two very nice desserts, one free since it was our anniversary. A delicious bourbon ball ice cream dish and a perfectly presented custard plate. Shouldve taken a pic but it didnt last long. They werent small, just that good. Well definitely be back before our next anniversary.

NO QUESTION (at least in our minds.) !!! Absolutely the BEST ITALIAN and one of the very BEST restaurants in the city! A tiny bit more "formal" than some like; a little on the high side; a shade noisy with people eating, drinking, talking, laughing and thoroughly enjoying themselves; BUT who cares when the setting is lovely, the service is professional, attentive and friendly, and the food is "mama mia" delicious! We have never, repeat never, had an ordinary meal- from soup to nuts, and we have probably racked up just short of 100 visits in the last few years. ( Have they ever had an "off" night? Probably. Everybody does now and then. If you are there on one of those RARE occasions, just let it slide and try again. You wont be sorry.) For all the new "eateries" popping up, this one of our citys near PERFECT staples. pw
