The owners are an amazing brother and sister team of bakers from Turkey. Their braided breads, quiche, lamb borek, and other tasty pastries are not to be missed! If and when they have it, Turkish patrons will go crazy over their green beans dish, swearing they have traveled home to their mothers kitchens! This small cozy shop in Church Hill also boasts one of the most premier espresso machines in the world. So make sure to have a latte or espresso, you will not be disappointed :) Why 4, instead of 5... There is only one tiny issue this place has, occasionally they run out of everything rather early and all that is left are slightly burnt items. This has happened more than two or three times, so its an ongoing issue, but not a deal breaker. I still eat there on the regular. Tip: Get there early for a 5 star experience. If you are there when they open or early in the day, you are good to go.

The pastries here are simply the BEST. Their fig and cheese is SO delicious, and the atmosphere is super cozy. We lived in Churchill for a while and kept hearing about this place, but we finally visited after the major snowstorm for a quick bite and I wish wed found it sooner! The space is very open, and while theres not an incredible amount of seating, it feels spacious and open yet you can have an intimate conversation with your friends while munching on some incredible baked goods. If you have any sort of passion for bread or pain au chocolat or just a good coffee shop you would be remiss to not visit.

Pleasant surprise... great service, and a very unique concept of location sharing by multiple businesses. Sub Rosaro serves a different selection of wines every other weekend, and allows another business to offer cold plates to compliment these unique wines. Of course, Sub Rosa is a bakery during the day. The business brought an otherwise rundown old place in a historic part of Richmond, and transformed it into a charming little escape that will certainly contribute to this areas revitalization. We will be back ... with friends!

Changed from 5 stars to 1. The food here is delicious...When there is any for you to purchase. The last three times I have been in, the case has been completely empty. The staff has always been less than friendly, nearly condescending. This was tolerable when combined with the ability to walk away with crazy yummy pastries. The past 3 times I have been in, I have talked to a surly barista and walked away empty handed. As a Church Hill resident, this makes me very sad.

I love the atmosphere; busy, young and energetic. And the croissants were exceptionally good. As a coffee spot, its top notch. As a bakery, Im not so sure. I know the baker movement is towards more "caramelized" crusts but the wheat loaf and flat bread I got Id consider burnt. I chose the LEAST caramelized ones. I hope the movement dies. This place deserves major neighborhood support and a long life. Ill visit again and hope for 5/5 stars next time.

The cheese and fig pastry is a butter-laden, manhole cover sized masterpiece. But so are all of their offerings. Dont miss the sour cherry and pistachio pastry. Or the croissants. You will stand on line longer than you want to...you should double check your order before you walk out...you should also know the limit of 8 pastries per order. Then you should ignore all of that and have an amazing pastry brunch nowhere else but here.

Delicious! The apple tart was like a portable apple pie. Best apple tart Ive ever eaten. Even the simplistic shortbread cookie did not disappoint. The chocolate croissant was also phenomenal. Everything was just so flaky, fluffy, and baked to a perfect brownness. I also sampled the grain bread, and it was so moist I couldnt believe it. The coffee is also pretty good.

The chocolate pastries (le pain au chocolat) are absolutely delicious and our go-to choice when it comes to breakfast sweets! The savory pastries are also delicious and always baked fresh, my favorite being the salami and cheese croissant. If youre in Church Hill and peckish for some delicious baked goods, stop by!

Sub Rosa is a special place. Before you go for the first time, imagine youre going to a market more than a restaurant. The sounds, the chaos, the espresso, the best pastries, and the best (only??) wood-fired, house-milled heirloom wheat naturally leavened, dont-blame-me-for-ruining-all-other bread in Virginia.

A fantastic addition to the neighborhood. The baked goods are amazing and the prices are great as well. Ive found myself making excuses to be in the area so I can stop in for a bite and to grab something for later on. They have some good seating for eating in and enjoying the neighborhood feel.

I love this place, and their bread is amazing. Sadness: the classic loaf is only available on certain days, and never before noon. Coming from the northeast, Im used to bakeries where the bread is ready in the morning, but hey, this bread is incredible. Its worth the wait.

Outstanding croissant dough goods. Everything else that Ive had that didnt make use of the croissant dough is just good. The location itself is clean although not the friendliest staff but thats not very important. Get the pain au chocolat or the almond croissant.

Their croissants will blow your mind! I... I think this is my favorite bakery in all of the US! lol. Whenever we pass by Richmond, I *have to* stop at Sub Rosa Bakery... and order 2 boxes of all the things. I love their savory pastries as well!

Everything has been outstanding. This is no regular break. With bread like this, I dont mind the idea of " living off bread and water". I come in at least 2 per week since we moved down the block. This is a MUST TRY PLACE!

Couldnt decide between the salami and cheese croissant and the lamb borek so I ordered both. Lamb was not overbearing and was well balanced with the pastry. Croissant was flaky, buttery, luxurious even. Will be back.

Amazingly great pain au chocolat. Super nice service and fun to watch the the busy oven at work while enjoying the incredible baked goods. Very much wish they had decaf espresso. Highly recommended.

Awesome pastries. One of the best bakeries I have ever been to. Typically in Richmond quality coffee and coffee preparation is uncommon, but Sub Rosa also does this very well. Highly recommended.

I buy a half loaf of bread every week for sandwiches. They bake the best bread that Ive ever tasted. The polenta loafs are my favorite, along with flatbread ones for special dinner occasions.

One of the (if not the) best bakery I have been to in the (united) states. Flakey wood fired croissants and an unmatched rustic pastry selection make this a must visit every time Im in RVA.

I didnt feel welcomed enough to order anything. Everyone was staring as if to ask me what did i want there. Guess it isnt the place for me. Acceptance of diferrent ethics would feel great.

Everything Ive had here has been incredible, especially anything with fig in it. I bring everyone who visits to Sub Rosa to give them a great impression of how Richmond does it right!

I have bread every time I travel, have never come across any bread better than Sub Rosa. Other baked goods, primarily croissants, are also at a level I can compare others to.

One of Richmonds secret treasures, this is the place to go when you have that craving that only buttery crust will satisfy. Try the tart cherry and pistachio danish. Yum!
