I was always curious about this restaurant. We passed it on Rte 29 everytime we went to visit my wifes family in MD and yesterday we finally had the opportunity to go. Plainly stated, our experience was a big dissapointment. Food: I have been to German restaurants before and can say that some traditional dishes could be bland; however, all of what we were served wasnt just bland, but mushy and oily. Crispy duck was not crispy. Skin was chewy and undercooked. Sesoning was OK. The veal cordon blue was OK, but they need to reassess their plate decoration. Canned pineapple slices on a $30 dish do not cut it. The Spaetzle was also overcooked. It looked like a bowl of oatmeal and my pasta-loving wife would not even touch it. The Blaukraut had no texture to it. It was a bowl of overly sweet cabbage pudding and it stayed right where the waitress left it. The kids meal was atrocious. The mini-burgers were previously frozen and tasted liked cardboard. Our daughter ate the fruit that came with them instead. The Potato dumplings tasted like some kind raw dough ran quickly through the steamer. They did not taste like anything made with potatoes. We chose not to order any dessert to avoid further disappointment. Price: Very expensive. I have eaten better at other restaurants for less. Atmosphere: Nice. The wood, windows, uniforms of the staff, and the beatiful location give it a real rural german feel. They should put the power outlets elsewhere though. No one wants to see a power outlet in the middle of their table! The table top lamp connected to it looked like no one had ran a clean rag through it since WWII. Service: OK. Waitress was decent. Food came quickly and she was friendly towards our children. Overall: We will not be going back to the Bavarian Chef. The food leaves a lot to be desired for the price.

Great food, appropriate atmosphere, friendly people... The place was overrun when we arrived so it took a few minutes for our server to get with us. The host got us water in the meantime and everyone visited us to assure us wed be helped in a few. Really we all needed that time to look at the menus (food and alcohol). We searched a few dishes (in German and French on the menu) to preview what the dish may look like, despite good descriptions in the menu. We also had a minute to talk about the decor which I thought looked like the Haunted Mansion at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World (not a bad thing) but the rest of the table said looked Continental enough for them, so I think we all enjoyed it. Once ordered, the food arrived quickly. Our Pretzel (not on the menu, I think this is assumed rather than some secret item) was huge (12" by 8" at least) and excellent. This is appetizer enough for 4-6. We got 3 meat entrees which comes with 4 family-style sides. All dishes and sides were excellent per the table. The portions were so big that every group who left was carrying some sort of leftover with them. Being in a hotel, we only took the pretzel, which magically was excellent the next day even without heating. So bring an appetite and a spirit of adventure and youll be well rewarded. This place is a gem.

This was my first opportunity in months since moving from NJ to enjoy this place. I love German food. Wurst and schnitzel and pretzels and good beer with a side of relishes, mustards, and onions. Its a cuisine that Ive not had a lot of opportunities to try, aside from the amazing Newportville Inn in Bristol, PA, which I visited maybe five times, which was my exemplar. This place beats it. Culture is strongly represented here, in language, dress, and setting. I was here with family and new friends, and it could not have been a more welcoming setting. The Wurst Platter (pork, lamb, and veal?) was what I decided on, and it was a joy from start to finish the next day. My 11yo had the amazing crunchy pork chops with house made apple sauce, and loved them. My 8yo got the Hansel and Gretel Chicken, crunchy and divine. My cousin and her husband got the beautiful prix-fixe with delectable choices each. Joanna got a house special, a beef tenderloin that was positively falling apart with a generous heaping of sausage stuffing and fried onion straws. We all got to share all of the veg family style. Come heavy, because it aint cheap. Come hungry, cause it aint just a bit. But, I implore you, if you like fun delicious food, come.

I tried Bavarian Chef for the first time tonight and I was pleasantly shocked at the experience. The decor itself is clean and presentable but nothing special. Its a large, old house converted to a restaurant which is readily apparent, but dont expect avant garde style. The service was slightly slow at a peak hour but the server was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Moreover, the server picked up on cues at the table for which diners were together (for bagging leftovers,) that it was a special occasion, and even who was picking up the check. The food (especially at the price) was exceptional. Only one of our six diners was at all disappointed and, even then, only at the sauce for their entrée. Any type of pork was especially well done, but the steak was also cooked perfectly to order. It is also worth noting that the portion sizes are gigantic, which makes the prices entirely reasonable. The desert selection was also very robust and well executed. I honestly prefer here to the The Inn at Little Washington based on price, atmosphere, and even food. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed my lunch here the other day. This is the type of place one should come to with a good person or group of people to talk with. Its the ideal restaurant to spend a couple of hours to truly enjoy the full experience. The portions are huge which is why the prices are on the higher side, I believe. You should defiantly split a meal or take your other half of the meal home. I had the Mandel Schnitzel which was a nice pork tenderloin served with a fantastic strawberry sauce. The Schnitzel came were two giant tenderloins that are covered with almonds. The meal comes with two sides, I ordered the Spätzle and sauerkraut everything was fantastic and worth every bite. The interior of the restaurant is typical Bavarian. I loved the decorations and wooden chairs and tables. The service was a little slow but other than that I had a very good experience here. They have a great selection of German beers!

Staff, with The exception of our primary server were extremely inhospitable and cold. They acted like they were being lined up against a wall and beaten if they so much as cracked a smile at a costumer. I got the Seafood New Orleans, I dont think a blood hound would have been able to find the supposed lobster or scallops that were advertised as included. My wifes Karlsbadener Sahnegoulasch resembled slop with a similar taste, which included a heavy taste of curry powder (which is very German). It then took 48 minutes (my wife timed it) from the moment we were done, to see a check, and then another 15 to get it processed. No lights were on outside and my wife who was able to make it down the stairs almost ate it on a steep decline directly after the stairs. Our bill was $95. I dont mind paying a higher price for good food and a good experience, this location is neither.
