This was not my first experience at the Barbecue Exchange, but it will be my last. Ive never been very impressed with their food. Its pricey, often the chicken is dry, and I dont care for some of their sides. But with out-of-town family looking for a "Virginia" experience, I thought Id give them a shot. The location is cramped and does not flow well. The amenities are picnic tables with butcher paper, paper plates, and plastic flat ware. Plan on about $12-$15 per plate...more if you want a beer. I placed my order for a family meal with a few extras and paid. The cashier realized I was moving to a table and yelled across the room that I needed to pay an additional $5 "dine-in fee" if I planned on staying. I briefly considered paying, but changed my mind and proceeded to collect my wife and family to move to our car to tailgate. One of the out-of-town family members decided they didnt want to sit in the heat and paid the $5 so we call all eat together. So, I guess The Barbecue Exchange got their $5 and I learned to go someplace else for BBQ with my family. Not friendly...certainly not family friendly. Meh barbecue, OK sauces, crappy flow, paper plate mentality. Id go someplace else.

We love the Barbeque Exchange! Often we get the pork or chicken family meal to go (1 lb of BBQ, 3 sides, 4 pumpkin muffins, & 4 pieces of corned bread or 4 rolls). If its Friday or Saturday night, well call ahead and the efficient staff has the order ready when we arrive - no waiting! Sometimes we get Brunswick Stew as a side and enjoy with the corn bread the next day for lunch. If were hungry, well get the hush puppies or onion rings to munch on in the car ride home. Craigs Carolina remains our favorite sauce but they have a variety of creative sauces. My bride & mother in law hail from NC and love the BBQ! Weve never had anything bad and tried lots including the salmon & tofu bbq plus the ribs. I had a committee meeting on the porch w/ folks from the Valley and Fredericksburg. After tasting the bbq the committee doesnt want to meet anywhere else. We had my brides birthday party at a large table inside last year and everyone was happy from the three year old grandson to the birthday girl. The smiling staff always treat us like family so we never tire of visiting for dinner. If you havent been to the Barbeque Exchange, check it out!!!

I happened upon this place on my way thru town. i was looking for a place to eat and the appearance of this old rustic building drew me in. Nice white porch railing and blooming flower baskets hanging and a sign bearing my 2nd favorite word on a sign - barbecue!!!! (Beer being my fav word). The inside was as inviting as the outside. Everything was neat, clean yet authentic to the spirit of BBQ. Living in Houston I dont take my bbq lightly and these folks did not disappoint. I had the big pulled pork sand, seasoned fries, slaw and pickles. Everything was home made down to the selection of slaw and pickles. The smell of bbq and wood fire filled the entire block. The man in the back was tending to the fire and manning his bbq pit as if it were an engine of a ship. But the friendly service and pride in the place, by the staff, is what sets this place apart. If in Gordonsville, VA dont miss this place. Hell, drive up from Richmond, its that good.

I had Heaven on a Bun...It was pretty tasty for sure! Apparently it was seen on Fire and Man or some such TV show. Fried egg, delicious bacon, and beautiful pulled pork on a bun slathered with baconaise, lettuce, and tomato. I had it with the hush puppies - delicious! My husband copied my order and we had a family size side of mustard based potato salad, single serving size of the pasta salad, and our 5 yr old went with the macaroni and cheese. The mac and cheese was the most disappointing in that the sauce tasted slightly gritty as if it had been cooked over too high of heat. It really didnt stop me from enjoying it. We went early (11am) and it was already filling up fast so I suggest be prepared for a wait or arrive just as it opens. Outside seating is nice through the truck traffic is quite loud. They do have beer/wine (Try the Bold Rock!) and the usual lemonade, sweet tea, and sodas.

I drove from 2 hours away to get "The best BBQ in VA". I can tell you that I have had better BBQ from the local grocery store. I am not sure why people hype up this place???? I am not sure if it is a case where people just do not know good BBQ, or they just settle for mediocre food. My wife and I spent $36 dollars for lunch. I got the 3 meat platter with pulled pork, brisket, and ribs. The pulled pork had to be the best out of the 3 meats, but not ranked in my top 50 ever eaten. The brisket was about 2 hours overcooked and dark grey in color. I took 1 bite out of my ribs and threw the rest away. I NEVER throw food away but there wasnt enough sauce in the place to help those ribs. I take great pride in cooking great BBQ and I do it regularly on my grills I have at home. I do not like leaving bad reviews, but I needed to let people know a HONEST opinion about this place.

For a Native Texan and Barbeque officianiado the meat is fair and with the rest of the experience it rated a 4 star experience. The meat is best without any sauce! The sauces are not good. They are pretty much various forms of ketchup with varying amounts of vinegar and a little red pepper. The sides are excellent! The service is great. The restaurant itself is clean and is a good family-oriented place. Parking could be better. Getting in and out of the parking lot is tricky depending on the time of day. Pricing may seem high, but the amount of food received is commensurate. Drinks are bottled soft drinks and beer. Sweet and unsweetened tea are also available in cups with free refills. The bread is excellent. All of it is freshly made on site. I would have given 1/2 a star for this, but it wasnt an option. This restaurant is definitely worth stopping for!

Great place to stop for BBQ! Added 2016-5-23 - My favorite sandwich here is the large sliced brisket with spicy slaw but today I saw they had a new "Hell on a bun" sandwich. If you finish it you get a T-shirt. I pride myself on eating hot food, and I finished everything inside the bread, but the bread soaks in all the sauce and blew my head off! I am glad I tried it but definitely NOT going to try again. HOT! Only the most brave should attempt! If you are in town and dont stop here to eat you are missing out on some great food! 2017-1-3 Tried the Purgatory and really enjoyed all the different flavors. I loved the fried green tomato on it, as it wasnt something I would ever expect on a BBQ sandwich.
