Ok, call me a purist- I am from Texas- but southern barbecue and porcelain dishes do not go together. It would be like an authentic French food restaurant serving caviar on a paper plate. I have not eaten at The Sugar House restaurant yet, but I saw a picture of their barbecue in dainty porcelain dishes. Southern barbecue restaurant owners doing this always says to me that they are strangely embarrassed by southern barbecue and its history. I guess that they are overly- concerned with appealing to certain customers. Kaisers barbecue is a good example of how being proud of the southern barbecue dining experience, as a whole, is a good thing. They do not use porcelain dishes, do not have a television or have a cookie- cutter appearance. And they have been rated number one best barbecue place in Salt Lake City for awhile now. Barbecue goes with only paper plates or wax paper. In the south, it is even sometimes served on newspaper. The Sugar house neighborhood is our one little liberal oasis in a sea of conservativism. Let us not ruin it by making things yuppied or Lexus liberal, which is not liberal at all.

We just left and Im so disappointed. I bring any family who comes in town here to eat. I brought my family for Xmas eve 2016, and a date on Valentines along with several other times when just my son and I have visited. Tonight they have no air conditioning, no fries (mind you we brought 4 kids), a chipped water glass, and someone screaming from the line for runners. The table behind us was complaining and people were fanning themselves at every table. When we asked our waitress about the air she said everything was malfunctioning. No apologies. Ate half and took half to go because it was so uncomfortable. When we left the hostess didnt say a word. Normally the staff is super friendly, they always say thanks and goodbye. Why let people eat there if you arent fully functional. The food came out so fast it must have been reheated. My niece said her ribs were dry which has never happened to me there ever. Not thrilled and even less so that they could care less, even with wait staff and customers fanning themselves. My sister had to ask for new iced tea twice. What a mess. Very disappointed.

The chicken wings and the bbq ribs are the best in Utah. Love them. On occasion the ribs might be a bit drier than what I would prefer, but overall the quality is consistent. I think I can eat the wings till I pass out. The sides are just fine -- nothing to write home about. The baked potatoes (i think they call them greek or something like it) are good, but Ive had better jambalaya. The service is ok, for the most part. Out of the 10+ times Ive eaten there, Ive only had one negative experience. But than again, dont expect too much -- the atmosphere is pretty informal and so is the service. The food is a bit pricey, but $30 still feeds two people if you are willing to share. It would be nice if they did lunch specials. Also, I like that the tables are not too close to each other. Yes, sometimes you might have to wait for a table, but at least you are not bumping elbows with the neighbors. Lastly, for a place that has more of a pub feel and serves beer, it is actually pretty popular with families with children.

I would definitely say my experience was sub-par. We went there at about 8:30 p.m., was seated outside next to the fence (on the other side of the fence was their dumpster which was giving off all kinds of foul rotting meat odors), re-seated ourselves, and ordered appetizers of wings and some other meat... needless to say it tasted and felt like jerky (not in a good way). We thought it might just be the appetizers, so we gave hope to the entrees... no different story. The ribs i had (which they say theyre famous for) were as dry as a cotton cloth, and the brisket was thin and felt like itd been under a heat lamp for 5 hours. Each person in our party of four had the same experience with pulled pork, turkey sandwich, another order of ribs, and some hot wings. The only redeeming thing was they had good barbecue sauce. It really made the dry jerky-like meats go down okay. Service was okay... a little slow but they were busy. Definitely wouldnt recommend it - go to Pats Barbecue.

I liked the restaurant overall. The young waitstaff there sometimes seems unattentive (received low tip) but the food made up for the service I was expecting. Not having barbeque in a while, I was looking forward to it. I had some of their in house fries...very good with their barbeque sauce! I also had a quarter chicken, which I liked well done. When the server brought me the meal, I requested the chicken go back in. We spent a few minutes discussing why I should accept the chicken prepared as it was. Eventually, I got what I wanted. I dont think cornbread is a good blend to serve with mash potatoes and chicken. It took a little while for her to return to refill drinks, but when it was time for the bill, she was quick about the process. I am sure this is a fine establishment. While I am well traveled, I am sure I wasnt going to get Louisiana barbeque in Utah, but it was good for barbeque and it is known in Salt Lake. Shall I visit SLC again, I will return to the restaurant.

Went here on my birthday and it was an awful experience. The price was pretty high for the portions, which is common with barbecue, so that wasnt a huge surprise. Our service wasnt the best, it almost seemed like our server was avoiding us to some extent. We had the burnt ends special, with a few sides and an order of wings. The food was served Luke warm and cold in some parts, it just didnt feel like a lot of effort went into our experience here. The food quality was okay, Ive been spoiled with good barbecue from very well qualified chefs in my life and this place wasnt even close. I was more impressed by the French fries than anything else, which is just absurd. I was debating telling our server that our food was cold and not up to snuff, but after waiting for 10 minutes to see her again we gave up. Id really like to give this place another chance, but based on what Ive heard from others and the steep prices, Id much rather stick with the top notch places Ive already been.

WOW!!!! Not in a good way either. I was visiting the SLC area from Ogden. I smoke meat myself, so whenever I get a chance I like to experience other smoke food from local restaurants. I asked a business that I visited while in the SLC area where I could get some good BBQ.. He recommended Sugar House BBQ. Without question I headed there before making my commute back to the Ogden area. I ordered the plate that I could get the best variety of the menu. Ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. This came with corn bread, which looked very dry, I didnt dare try it. Ribs had a good smoke flavor, but very dry. The brisket was very dry and had no smoke flavor at all. The pulled pork was very very very dry. I wasnt able to finish the food due to the poor quality. Upon entering and leaving I walked by the quality equipment used to prepare the smoked food. I dont know what happens between the smoker and the customers plate, but after my experience, I will never return
